Most Common Riding Mower Engine Problems

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In "Grandpa's Lil Helper", Taryl goes over the most popular and common riding mower engines he sees and each of their most common issues. Taryl sees a lot of these engines so he knows what the most common things are to check out. Before and After the fix, local grandpa, Gary, brings his grand son Johnny to the lawn mower shop. After little Johnny's imagination runs wild he decides to "fix" grandpa's lawn mower. See how it all plays out in this hilarious and very informative how-to video from your pals at Grass Rats Garage!

Taryl, when it comes to passing on knowledge about repairing all sorts of small engine driven machines you are "The Man". You have the best site by far when it comes to passing on how to repair and troubleshoot this equipment, so much better than anything else on the internet. You make the manufacturer sites look like kindergarten and you have fun showing us to do the repairs. There is nothing like a man with the knowledge and practical experience to teach someone how to do something. Keep up the good and fun work!

I’m on my 2nd 24 hp Briggs & Stratton engine. Until I watched your channel the John Deere dealer won’t even look at either machine because of bent push rods. I viewed your other video on V-twin Briggs engines and ordered a new head and push rods. I did the work and saved a $3000 mower with a new $200 dollar head thanks to you. Much appreciated, Taryl.

I have learned about Kohler Command engines which I have a 16 horse power. I own a Dixon 4516 and she is pretty good for grass cutting. I've recently tuned it up with a gas filter, air filter kit, a spark plug, and four tires. Could use blades, belts, and pulley's looked at too. Your videos are A+ #1 for us do it yourselfer's. You have a unique sense of humor and a host of loony tune folk to pull it off. Kudos to Taryl, Taryl Jr., Slippers, and crew for a good time had by all.

My 2007 craftsman 46 inch has been mowing my 2 acres roughly every 10 days or so for 12 years. It does more than mow for me, it pulls down dead timber, drags logs and hauls my loaded down garden trailer all over the place. That 540cc briggs intek has been a work horse and is still going strong. I've definitely gotten my moneys worth from that little red tractor.

Great review. I would add that high hour opposed twin Briggs and Stratton tend to have failure on the top connecting rod. They seem to starve for oil a little bit and over time, they 'self machine' the top con rod bearing journal at the crankshaft and break the connecting rod. This has happened to lots of them and the same has happened to me.

I've got one of those Briggs 18 hp opposed twins. Came in a Lowes riding mower I bought new in 1995. It still runs good but just started leaking oil. I've got it on the bench now changing out the sump gasket and oil seal. I couldn't tell exactly where it was leaking from so I bought a whole gasket set and will change as many as I can. I also got a carb rebuild kit. The only thing I've had to fix in the past was a new Bendix for the starter. I mowed grass with it up until a year ago when I bought a new JD. The Lowes mower doesn't have a time meter, but I estimate I've put around 400 hours on it since 1995.

Taryl, you are so good! My mommer's John Deere has the Intek engine with the plaskit plentum. Twice now, the old gas has gummed up the carbitrator wear the sillinoid shuts off the gas. There is a white plaskit plug that the sillinoid pulls back to let the gas in, but when it's gummed up, it just sets there. She'll run all day if yore spraying carb cleener in, but just won't run on her own till you free up that plaskit thang operated by the sillinoid. The beginning of this video, caused me to have a aneurysm. (I had someone do a little johnny to one of my riding lawn mowers) Also, how do you have so many riding lawn mowers? do people start to repair them, and then just dump them on you or something? Wow... little johnny... that turned into nightmare mode at the end. Cool video. Thanks for doing it! I got a old White MTD 1855 given to me, & it has a 18 B&S Vanguard on it.. glad to know that's a reliable engine. Looking at the shroud that surrounds it, its no surprise about mice nest..

This video helped me diagnose my B&S 10 hp problem. It was running like the governor wasn’t working. You mentioned the screws on the butterfly plate of these engines can loosen. Loosen? Heck, both of mine were missing and the plate was sucked into top of the head! I fished it out with a magnet and it’s pretty dinged up but no chunks of it are missing. Thanks again for an entertaining and accurate video!

I have one and it seems to stop working over winter sometimes. Last time I literally just took it apart, found nothing obviously wrong with it (spotless), then put it back together and it worked perfectly again. Voodoo.

Mechanic couldn't fix my loss of power issue on twin Kohler Courage. Your tip on valve clearance directed me to the problem. They need to be adjusted after the first 200 hrs. I was at 470. Thanks Taryl!

Watching this video again. This is one of my favs. Taryl should do a 2024 version. I feel like a lot has changed. Most of those engines seem obsolete to me now.
