Fix a Surging Engine - John Deere GX75 Kawasaki 9HP Complete Carb Cleaning Demo

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

If you have the time, I'll show the complete carburetor cleaning process I used to solve this surging engine problem. This Kawasaki 9HP motor on this John Deere GX75 riding lawn mower had sat unused for two years. Old fuel gunks up a carburetor. Not good! But I must apologize: the camera battery died, so I did not get to film a conclusion. Regardless, I hope this video helps you, and I thank you for watching.

Mine is an RX75 with a 9HP Kawasaki engine and it looks the same except for the muffler being in the way, did that fix it? Mine runs fine on low idle but when I advance the throttle it starts surging an then dies. I ne to my grass is really getting tall weeds and all. Thanks for t he video instruction.

There are actually two more very small jets on one side of the carb. Air jets i believe.

Could use some help with my GX75... I'm guessing it's a carburetor problem but I don't want to jump in to disassembling it until I understand it fully. It'll start up and run fine when I have the choke/throttle set at high (The rabbit icon) but anything lower and it stalls out. It can run and mow without problems, but I'm worried there's something else at play that could be causing damage. It started when I ran the fuel tank dry at the beginning of the summer. Couldn't get it running well for awhile, then found that it runs with the choke at max. I'm guessing it sucked up a bit of dirt and clogged one of the jets. When I remove the air cleaner, I can see lots of carbon and dirt leading down to the carb. The gasket between the air cleaner and carb is also missing, and I haven't been able to find a replacement. There's the screw on the side of the bowl which I thought was supposed to adjust idle, but if I unscrew it more than half a turn it leaks gas. I had fully removed it once, not knowing what it was for, and could have damaged something. The screw itself is badly stripped, and could probably use replacing. I appreciate any advice you might have. My dad was my mechanic encyclopedia, and used to have the answer to any question, but he passed last year before getting much of a chance to teach me about the intricacies of his riding mower.

If your engine only runs with the choke engaged, then you clearly have a fuel flow problem through the carburetor. You either need to clean it thoroughly, or replace it. It is very inexpensive to buy aftermarket carburetors on ebay or amazon. I did this recently on a cub cadet tractor with kohler engine, and that thing runs like new now! And if you've stripped out one of the adjustment screws, and you're missing a gasket, just go ahead and buy a new carb, which come complete with the new gaskets. Good luck.

@@Buckwsr Only ones I've found are $150-160 - Is that on the cheaper end? I was hoping for maybe a 50 dollar part. I'm guessing if I just spray carb cleaner down the air cleaner manifold, break up the gunk without actually getting in there and removing it, it'll cause more problems further down the line? Thanks for the help.

What engine do you have? It is the Kawasaki FC290V? If so, should be about $65-75 on ebay, based on what I see.... Carb spray won't hurt anything, but unless you take it apart and give it a good cleaning, the spray alone probably won't do too much....

@@Buckwsr I believe it's the FC290V - It's the John Deere GX75 with 9HP engine, looks to be the same as the one in the video. I'll check ebay then, thanks. As for the carb cleaner, just thought it would be worth a shot spraying it in the top and seeing if it knocks anything loose. I was just concerned that whatever the carb cleaner breaks up will go through the engine and potentially gunk it up. Unfortunately the problems started when I ran the gas tank dry. Bought a new fuel filter for it and found that it doesn't even have one installed right now, the previous owner must have removed it because one of the gas lines is not original.

Search ebay for "John Deere GX75 Carburetor"....you'll find a bunch listed, less than $40.... money well spent, in my opinion. Good luck.

The GX75 has a smaller plastic setup than the RX75. I personally like the GX since it feels smaller, same chassis tho.

This video is kind of useless, no direction, just randomly turning air fuel mix needles ? do they have a setting, are they tighten all the way down ?? who knows lol ... i would suggest maybe some baseline settings and at least keep track of how many turns out the screws were. The jets should be all the way in. Plus maybe film a few seconds of what the surge looks like for those that dont know if its actually their issue, and then after the cleaning is done, another 4 seconds of motor running nice and smooth. For the record, it was most likely the main jet causing surge issues since people leave gas in their mowers over the winter, plus the older engines need premium fuel nowadays, the base 87 octane causes all sorts of hick ups in these old boys. Mine is a 96 and runs like a champ :)
