Wow, never messed with mowers.. Though my mower is different than this. This video saved my bacon and helped me fix mine -Thanks a million!!
Quite the opposite of an acid, Sodium Hydroxide (caustic soda) or Potassium Hydroxide (caustic potash) is what you want.
SOLID. I was able to tap and pry it loose using this method. Thank you!
Thank you for posting! That’s the exact mower I have with the Honda engine. I used Chevron premium gas octane 94 while in storage for the last 2 years while starting it every 3-4 weeks. It started okay with fresh gas but I made the mistake of tipping it on the air filter side to clean the deck and gas dripped out of the air filter. When I started it again it smoked for a long time. I added fresh gas and kept running it and now it’s working well.

Very informative and precise. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!

Thank you for taking the time showing such a great video.💯👍👍
Thanks for watching friend
Have you ever seen one of these briggs motors with the intake valve on top? There are no numbers on my valve cover for me to see what series the motor is specifically (just know it is a 17.5hp in a Scotts S1742). Every video I have watched has the intake valve on the bottom with the aluminum push rod on the bottom, but mine has the aluminum rod on top which has caused me to believe that the top has to be the intake valve. But now I am wondering if someone worked on this motor previously and mixed up the push rods
Just done one took shroud off cleaned underneath easily removed fuel line
Is there a chance the engine may catch fire if allowed to smoke too long?
not really but anything is possible I guess.
Very helpful video.
I used this to fix my Rear wheel drive M320. I do not have a channel, but filmed it if you’d like to narrate it and add it to your channel. Thanks Much CE
Thanks friend I am happy to hear that this video helped! Good job.
15:30 sometimes a star drive will grip a stripped hex.
Good tip
You're funny with the cute LITTLE spiders!
The carbs for this engine all seem to have the same problem; they leak and start POURING gas into the engine. I'm on my third replacement carb...after cleaning each one countless times.
I have not experienced many problems with this original manufactured Briggs carb. Cheap aftermarket carburetors will give you many problems.
@@jeffslawnmowerrepairandservice What's the best price you've found for a genuine original carb for this engine? I went to Briggs and Stratton website and they're asking $230 for one. At that price I could get a lot of something else.... They're such a simple little thing, they can't be WORTH more than $30. Somebody is gouging heavy.
I have a similar engine but mines not turbo cooled mines just the craftsman i/c 19.5 twin briggs and stratton that needs work
thank you so much
What do you call the cable that goes on the bottom bar?
Lawnmowers can have 2 cables. Drive cable, stop cable.
Sometimes it is a bad connection
Need to clean where it mounted for good ground
This is not always the problem when they won't roll. Sometimes its the components of the trans axle such as a broken spring etc..
Where are your safety glasses?
Why in the world were you using a 1/2” impact to tighten a 3/8” bolt?? lol. A grade 8 3/8” bolt is only good to 42 ft/Lbs
I probably just snugged them down with the impact then followed up with a hand wrench. I often do this, Or I was being lazy.
what about the bent blade?
Gotta replace that!
Generally a bad idea to poke wires through *any* little hole in a carb ... use carb cleaner (acetone/toluene spray).
I agree but sometimes there is no other reasonable easy way to unplug jets. The copper will not scratch brass in my experience.
Hello there. Thank you for the great video. I noticed you said the engine is only 16 hp. I failed to notice how large the deck was for that lawnmower. Maybe it was a 42 or a 46. However, if you think back 25 years ago, they were putting a 12, 13 and 14 hp engines on mowers that size. I don’t know why they’ve increased the horsepower so much. I’m not complaining though. I have a 42 inch “Troy Bilt” with an 18 hp “Braggs & Scratton” engine and a 19 1/2 hp I can put on it if the 18 hp goes out. Both engines are in good running condition so far and are Braggs & Scratton (I’ve gotten caught up with the “Taryl Fixes All” crowd and nicknames for all engine makes). So let’s see how this turns out when you replace that “Krohler”. I do hope the “carbitrator” is nice and clean. By the way, you are so blessed to have all of those junk motors. I would love to have all of those for parts. I am 47 years old and have had a change of career and gone self-employed. I am slowly starting to build up a stock of broken or replacement engines but now I need some tractors and stuff.
NICE! everyone loves the "lawnmower man"
use the old seal to install the new one
That is a good tip sometimes!
Complains about the coil wires being loose and then proceeds to remove the connector by yanking on the wires instead of the connector itself. Rookie mistake
Nice video!!!
Thank you so much! I have been trying to see where all the screws were on my mower but it's very full of grass. Lol I have always heard that when you tip it over on the side just put the oil on top. Unfortunately now all the gas leaks out the cap. I only found four screws in mine and the top in the very middle seems to still be attached. So I will go back and see if I can find that middle screw today after work. Thank you so much for a very clear shot of your lawn mower and all the extra tips you gave. I have looked up so many videos you don't even know. Some of them were useless. Unfortunately I have one of the lawn mowers that does not have that little piece that pops off the top.lol
This FIXED my no starting problem with my Craftsman Lawn Tractor with a 20HP INTEK engine!!! THANK YOU!!!
Glad to help
A beed blast really clean these up good 😊
Is it good idea to drain gas and carburator when storing generator?
yes. Or you can store it for many months without draining it if you use non ethanol fuel.
I have one of these old mowers, I was wondering would it be possible to add a transmition and gear box on it to be able to turn it into a self-propelled lawn mower?
Anything is possible. However, if it is not setup for a transmission it may be alot of modifications to do it.
Can you leave everything attached and just spray the crap out of it with knockerloose? Or some form of lube
Yes it may help but I always end up having to disassemble it to clean and sand parts thoroughly smooth and lube. I have also pryed it loose many times with a screwdriver to get the brakes to loosen up, a temporary fix.
I subbed just for the smart@ss comments. Good job! 😎
LOL!
Good lord, this video is 25 minutes to long.
LOL! I had many problems to fix!
Thanks Michael Douglas. 😊
LOL! Every once in awhile someone recognizes the voice!
How old? How many hours? Was someone poking in there before? Looks like it's had plenty of poor maintenance . Easy to blame the manufacturer.
Kohler had some issues with engineering, parts availability and product quality on some but not all engine models, in my opinion. Some if not most of their small engines use hydraulic lifters which is pretty cool.
Could I pressure wash all that mess while I have it open already? Lol. Clean freak here
LOL! Good question! I would say that grease and dirt (to a limit) is usually better than soap and water for lawnmower parts and components. If you do wash it just make sure to always dry thoroughly. Because rust is the #1 enemy.
You really polished up that turd....pusher. :)
I just picked up one of these at a sale.. how do you change the oil? Any tips would be most helpful! It doesn’t have any paperwork
there should be an oil drain plug near the base of the engine.
Hi, i would like your advice, because of weight of dr tow behind, what is best way to get access to remove protek mower blades? Thank you.
I just prop it up on a log a foot or two up and I lay down to work on it.
I'm surprised that the engine mounting bolts align with the mower frame bolt openings.
Jeff I love the color of the mower in back ground
me too!
When do you know if you need the spacer on the pully, if your old engine didn't have it yet the new one has it and both shafts are the same length
good question. It is for belt alignment so you have to look and see if belts are straight when the pulley is installed
@@jeffslawnmowerrepairandservice logical answer, thanks for that Jeff
Great video, Very informative , maybe a little over the average Joe on the electrical ., But very helpful. Thanks for your time on this video Jeff
