Love his snarling razorblade of a voice. Such a crazy song.
Always like Cale better than Reed. He was always reaching just beyond his grasp and it is always exciting.
Out punks his punk resume plus circa 1970s punk scene. Cale is in full acidic welshman mode here. Still chasing Reed here...
I recall finding this in the import bin, at The Trucker's Union, on Water Street, Eau Claire Wis, circa 1978. Still have it too.
Classic song. Eclectic and melodic at the same time. This whole EP is great. Memphis has an immediacy to it and Hedda Gabler is a haunting masterpiece.
The sound of GREATNESS!!!
Man, am I glad I found this. Bitchin', just bitchin'.
Love this track. My vinyl went AWOL years ago and I've never seen it on CD. My band Shriekback used to play it in soundchecks, it was a hoot.

When we got this EP, we thought it was meant to be played at 33. we later realized it was meant to be played at 45, but still like the 33 version of chicken shit better. those with the EP try it!
The band who recorded Chicken Shit was: John Cale - vocals Ritchie Flieger - guitar Jimmy Bain - bass Bruce Brody - Moog synthesizer Kevin Currie - drums

His voice sounds so completely different than it does on the White Light White Heat album. I noticed that with Rosegarden Funeral of Sores as well.

Lucky you
I bought this, Guts and Sabotage on vinyl (French pressings) at the Laney Flea Market in Oakland for one dollar a piece back in the late 1990s! I recall playing Chickenshit at 33rpm, thinking it was the correct speed 🤣. Sadly sold my Cale finds during the early days of eBay (to eat and pay rent). Nice to hear this track again and its influence on Flipper's Sex Bomb Baby.
A wonderful gift of a bassline for Peter Hook to recontextualise into one of Joy Division's most driving and dead-end numbers.

What song?
@ForARide

@@jacobtauck8368 I think he means Exercise One, almost the identical bass line. In various Interviews Peter Hook named John Cale as one of his absolute music gods. Cale has been so influential, it beggars belief that he is still so underrated. E.g. take his song Leaving It Up To You, released in 1975 on his lp Helen Of Troy, which sounds like the blueprint for the Talking Heads. Then there is also Nick Cave, certainly been listening to Cale's dark ballads and also Cave's Birthday Party surely had been influenced by Cale's song Sabotage from 1979. And then there are also all of his productions and collaborations such as The Stooges, Patti Smith, The Modern Lovers or Nico, with whom he laid the foundations for postpunk and goth music. JC was/is the real Mr. Underground, and also the musical brain behind those revolutionary sounds on those two seminal albums, that opened up totally new horizons for the evolution in rock music.
The " Oh- oh my god... did- did you see what he did, he did WOO OOH OOH OOERRGH" part cracks me up every time!
The 3 tracks on the 12" "Animal justice" EP have been tagged onto the reissue CD of John Cale's live "Sabotage" album.
rock on John !
Best shit ever forreal.
Intro] Hi. My name's Arthur, and I quit... CHICKENSHIT! [Spoken] Oh, y'know, he said something about taking a feather home for his wife, y'know, for a hat that he was making or something, I dunno. I don't know what he's going to do with that chicken. He said he's not gonna hurt it so, so it's okay... [Verse 1] Ain't no body gonna waste my time Nobody tells me what's his and what's mine Break down the window, break down the door Don't want to listen to you no more Verse 2] Go on by my houses, you tear down the wall Darling don't like it, better stay at home I need her trouble like a hole in the head Get out yer gun and use it instead [Verse 3] Wasting your time, telling me what to do Take it or leave it or put it down Get out of the way, don't bring it down Gotta be, gotta be put out on the ground [Bridge] Chickenshit! Chickenshit! Chickenshit! Chickenshit! [Verse 4] Nobody gonna push me around Nobody gonna put words in my mouth Listen to no one, I don't get my mail Told me a fool always ends up in jail

@@Charlie-mb8il Yes, he still is one. but he was doing his own shock rock for a few years, in ski masks and straitjackets, trying to out do Alice by killing chickens on stage and acting like a raving lunatic on "Fear", "Heartbreak Hotel" or "Leaving It Up To You." Alice did all that first on "Love It To Death." Even the version of "Sun Arise" provides a chill mid way. But it was fun. Even David Bowie took from him at that point when he recorded Man Who Sold The World. I recommend "The Ballad of Dwight Frye."

Originally Bowie was gonna do the lines himself but he found it too difficult so he got the Japanese teacher to do it instead. Though Bowie definitely listened to Cale. TVC15 sounds very much like Dirty Ass Rock 'n' Roll and Station to Station riff is a bit similar to Mr Wilson's riff. According to Cale's latest song's music video, him and Bowie were friends around mid 70s so maybe that explains it. Leaving It Up To You sounds as it was taken directly from Bowie's mind at the time, military, magic and media all colliding into chaos.

@@stupidhipsterdoofus3278 and David Byrne and his Talking Heads had a close listen to Leaving It Up To You, sounds like the blueprint for them. Byrne collaborated with Cale live in 1976 (also on board where Patti Smith, Lou Reed and Chris Spedding), performing in NY at the Ocean Club. That gig is also here on YT.
