I love this song of John Cale! Its so powerful! The instrumental its more commercial, sounds like new wave but the vocal its more special because its more talk than sing and I love it

first time I saw John Cale was with Jeff Walls in 1981 at 688. He taught me about his solo stuff. This album was out and was being played a lot here. RIP Jeff.

I haven't heard this song in 30 years. I loved it the first time I heard it in the 80s. This is what should have played on the radio instead of bands like Journey. I heard this on a Pacifica station. Lets hear it for real music. Thank you for this.

Most people just wanted to hear Journey, Phil Collins etc. People who didn't really care about music got what they wanted.

Think Brian Eno once described him as an absentminded person like he can read a newspaper or a book while playing on a piano or a keyboard and talking to the telephone at the same time and make a song or a piece of music in that way ! Such an exceptional talent !

Yeah, I read that too. Couldn't find the sorce anymore. In case you got a link, could you post it here, cheers! Here's a quote by David Bowie: 'To me, the sound of the band (The Velvet Underground) was John Cale. That was confirmed a few years later when I worked with Lou on Transformer. John was the subversive element of the band, one of the most underrated musicians in rock history. That guy is a danger, a true character. '

I heard this track on Dave Fanning's Rock Show and bought the album, n brought it into Geoff's Bar in Waterford where I went on the way home, gasping for a gargle as I was. What's the album, someone asked. John Cale, Honi Soit, sez I, and I poured another half pint of stout down the inside of me neck. Give it here, sez the barman, or I'll kick the shite out of you. No prob, sez I. Within minutes the shop was rocking...Dead or Alive she said...

Strange times in casablanca when people pull down their shades And it's easy enough for us to look at each other and wonder why We were to blame Blame comes remorselessly transfixed Like the sound of slamming doors And doors have doors have doors have doors have doors Like companions have pets they sleep in each other's mattresses Like maggots in despair And bleed in each other's nests and make a mess of each other's snares Strange times in casablanca Strange times They make some striking couples They make some frustration of the call And only those who are satisfied by friendship would even pay Attention to it all It comes like mail or telegrams It comes expectant as a widow in heat as a widow in the searing heat And that contentment of depression that delivers most of the time But cannot help the styling of the horns in the shape of gargoyle Broken prints savage fingers Undertaken catamaran Strange times in casablanca We've turned our back on it once before And we can hear from across the waters what damage it will cause us And you can smash once more And they can smash once more But I don't think anybody wants to smash anymore
