Johns a true multi instrumentalist. He lived the rock'n'roll life style and managed to clean up and get his head back on. It's not easy and some can some can't. Glad he did.

This era of cale is a giant blindspot for me. When I think of him, i hear the early 70s records, and then I remember the contemporary stuff from Nookiewood onward. I don't know any of these songs 15 mins in. Hypnotic devo esque stuff. I love it. Didn't notice until 3 songs in that he was playing a flying v. lol

Most songs he's performing here are from his 1984 album Caribbean Sunset, the critics slated it, but imo it's a great post-punk album. Here's the link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pn5hsqtribfVabQ.html

John Cale lead vocals , piano , guitar ; Dave Young guitar, vocals ; Andy Heerman bass & vocals ; Dave Lichtenstein drums. It is the same band of the album Caribbean sunset of the same year (1984). Splendid rock concert , very Velvet Underground drums & mood , in my opinion . John is great : voice, guitar, piano just fantastic. Thank you for posting !

The guitarist is good but I couldn't find more into about him. He played on the Caribbean Sunset album. The guy on his recent live record is good too and there's not a lot of info on him either. Cale finds these great unknown guitarists.

You can really hear here how his lifestyle had taken a toll on his normally rich and expressive voice (and he looks pretty rough as well) - it's really great that he cleaned up and managed to get back his wonderful vocal abilities

Fully agree, otherwise he possibly wouldn't be around with us any more. But on the other hand I wouldn't want to miss those outrageous gigs from him, some extraordinary performances back then. Have you watched his 1983 Rockpalast gig, which I have also uploaded: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gqlly89recSTerQ.html Cale solo on piano and accustic guitar, a far more cleaned up performance. Possibly he was coked up to the ears, an amazingly intense and atmospheric performance from the Welsh Wizard.

It’s a brilliant performance, even though John is definitely regretful that there’s a visual document of it. He watches a bit of this at the beginning of the “Heroin, Wales, and Me” documentary, and he labels this performance as “hard to watch.“
