It's 2023 and I hear the original for the first time. Been loving the Bauhaus version since 1983. All those years.
Christ. I only found out around four years ago Third Uncle was by Eno, and now, after about 25 years of listening to Bauhaus, I find out this is also a cover. My life is a lie.

The first time I saw John Cale was sometime in the mid 80s at a small night club, Oscar's 1129 in my hometown on the Central West Coast, Santa Barbara, California. John Cale was only accompanied by guitarist Chris "Ace" Spedding. The only song I remember that John Cale sang was his beautiful ballad (one of my favorites) "Buffalo Ballet." The second time I saw John Cale (and my last time seeing him in concert) was in the early 90s. He and Siouxsie Sioux, with her new band at the time The Creatures performed together. Siouxsie Sioux sang his song "Gun." A friend of mine who he and I went to go and see them, he was a big listener of Siouxsie Sioux, and of course I was a big listener of John Cale. I told my friend that "Gun" was originally written and sung by John Cale. He thought it was an original song by Siouxsie Sioux. We saw them at the Ventura Majestic Theater in Ventura, California, just about 26 miles south of Santa Barbara off the 101 freeway. (Yup, "Ventura Freeway" by America).

Finally after 40 years I found out the Bauhaus rendition is a cover of John Cales song. Nice!

Utterly fucking brilliant.
Beautiful song from 1979 today in this year is the first time I hear it and I do not stop listening to it I love it 🖤
This great song is the B-Side from the 1980 7 inch single called "Mercenaries (Ready For War)". It is the only disc that has this studio version, later was included on the CD reissues of the 1979 live album Sabotage/Live.
Cale ahead of the pack again.
I could listen to this all day long lol!!!

I have. Many times. All day. Used to play it for my landlord neighbors nextdoor...LOUD!
John Cale reluctantly played this song as the medley with Femme Fatale for the first time in 2006. I wonder what he felt, when Bauhaus had the chart success with Ziggy Stardust in early 80s. They both belonged to Beggars Banquet label and Cale was struggling with reviving his career around that time.

I don’t know, I’ve seen Cale twice this year (2023), and he played it both times that I saw him
I'm amazed that so many people are saying "I thought that was by Bauhaus, I didn't realise it was a cover." I can't be the only one who would devour the contents of a record sleeve and the labels, etc, and therefore noticed "(J Cale)" listed as the songwriter.

No kidding. Always read everything on cover n sleeve. That's kinda the point isnt it?That's how we learn about our favorite bands. That's how we find new bands and old music relationships. I found Eno w/Roxy Music in the early/mid '70s. Found John Cale w/Velvet Underground like '72. Easy call for me. There was a great local record store in Pasadena CA that tought me a lot. May have found Bauhaus at the movies watching The Hunger w/David Bowie. Have a 16mil tape of Bauhaus from the Hunger movie where Peter Murphy is in the cage at the night club singing. Has Third Uncle n Bella Lagosi's dead. Met John Cale a few times. Got his autograph on "Fear" record when he was at a local radio station. Also as 2x as a promoter of sm clubs in Long Beach/n L.A. picked him up at airport n hotel. He's fun (as in don't meet your idols) ;)

Listened Cale´s music about 30 years, but now first time heard this great song, knowing this before only in a Bauhaus-version.
I’ve known since within a couple years of listening to Bauhaus that this was a Cale song. Still, it was fun to let down my fellow Bauhaus fans when I told them that this song, Third Uncle, and Telegram Sam were all covers. Though there was no internet back then so this is my first time hearing the original.
I'm 25 years old and found Bauhaus in 2010. Barely hearing this now 😂😂😂

Around the same time I discovered velvet underground actually, who I also love, but the dark stuff always holds me for longer .. Never would've expected this was a cover, John Cale's Welshness shining through quite brightly, and excellent lyrics
"I'm a professional musician, but at heart I'm an overstudied amateur".J. C. As quoted by Irmin Schmidt of Can who knew him in the late 60's in New York. One of my favourite quotes, but I never heard this 'til now. By anyone! He is a master. Oh look 4 people think not. Good for them. ?.
Ahh this tune
Just read the comments here, a lot of peoole coming from Bauhaus not knowing John Cale. Bauhaus were heavily influenced by Nico's albums The Marble Index (kzread.info/dash/bejne/m3l60pmkgpixXaQ.html), Desertshore (demo outtakes: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ipWcsNeKicTdl9Y.html) and The End. Cale not only produced those albums, but also arranged them, which means he composed and played all instruments apart from Nico's harmonium. Together they laid the foundation of what was later to become Goth, they were a decade ahead of their time. Cale continued to be enormously influential by producing the debut albums by Iggy's Stooges (kzread.info/dash/bejne/k22esqufj7mTZ5M.html), Patti Smith (kzread.info/dash/bejne/q6OGqKlqn8jMYqw.html) and The Modern Lovers (kzread.info/dash/bejne/an92wbuzequWcs4.html). JC was also the musical mastermind behind the Velvets groundbreaking sound on TVU&N (kzread.info/dash/bejne/p6x1lcyJkcnan84.html) and WL/WH, by implementing classical and avantgarde elements into Rock music. His solo career is unique, maybe only comparable to David Bowie's, always reinventing his musical styles and sounds, a genius musical chameleon. So for all Bauhaus devotees out there, here's a few recommendations: a stunning cover of Elvis' Heartbreak Hotel: kzread.info/dash/bejne/l6uM18SOnZWTY9Y.html Cale's insane rendition of The Velvets classic I'm Waiting For The Man: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eX5q1LWribankso.html and finally his harrowing masterpiece (IMHO) Music For A New Society: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eZ-em5aFibW_obQ.html Hope you enjoy!
Great song.
Cale is just so unique in that he and his peers were so ahead they seemed untouchable. Cale is dripped in goth before goth even had any meaning. Others started here but JC plodded away in full trailblazing stance...listen to the detail in this song.

His collaboration with Gothmother Nico as producer and arranger on The Marble Index and Desertshore defines him as the Prince Of Darkness. They carved out the crypt, on which the foundations of goth and postpunk were founded.
Omg, where has John Cale been my whole life?! I've always known Bau covered his song but never took the time to dig into Cale's music. Holy shxt, this song was decades ahead of its time in 1979! It's freaking incredible! The guitar distortion and lo fi recording - it f*****g rocks! Did Cale have anything to do with the band Suicide?! I get some hints of Suicide with the drum machine and flat out raw quality of this song. This is some of the best stuff I've heard in a long time! Not to take anything away from Bauhaus' version. Cale had to have been proud of their take on his work. They kept it rough and Murphy has more passion in his vocals but, come on, he was a fan borrowing another guy's song. He didn't want to let him down!

Really makes you wonder if the sometimes exclaimed statement that Cale was the chaotic mind in The Velvet Underground, never mind Reed's position as that. I mean, the more beautiful sides of Velvet Underground became even more apparent in releases after Cale's departure so...huh weird.

Cale brought the sinister and menacing sound to the Velvets. Without him Lou's original compositions sounded very Dylan'eske. John gave Lou's lyrics the required disturbing and unsettling atmosheres, so they could fully blossom into their doom and gloom characters. Moe described him as the lunatic factor and that they weren't the same after his departure. She also stated that John had a lot more to do with the finished product than people thought of. John Cale should have been co-credited for the music, but Reed's selfishness would have none of that.
This has to be the craziest and weirdest song ever written! You have to wonder about the sort of mind that could conceive of this, though I must stress that I’m a big John Cale fan. The last time I was at a warehouse store I linked my iPhone via Bluetooth to a high powered amp and stepped to the next aisle and gave them a good blast of Rosegarden. Then someone killjoy turned it down…

Face B from the "Mercenaries" single, released in the US on March 1980, 14 (on Spy Records). John Cale : vocals, bass, Wurlitzer piano Michael Mason : rhythm machine
Let's say that Cale has a good appreciation for the macabre, and his most angst-ridden album is "Songs for a New Society"....his more recent work is worth a look, too, a bit more of the "old guy" having fun and tweaking it as it wherem, as he always does..
