I drove about 5 hours from Western Pennsylvania to Philly to see them play this song. After the show, my friends and I waited out back to see if John would come out. He did and even spoke to us for several minutes. I told him that we had hoped to hear his new material on G. Gordon Liddy. But John told us that he had just played it in NYC but that it was not received well. Then some groupie came up behind him and put her arms around him. But he was disgusted and threw her arms off him. We shook hands and said goodbye.
My twin brother and I bought this album on a whim in 1980. We were 17 and record shopping at our local record shop, saw the album cover and both of us knew it had to be something special. We hit the nail squarely on the head that day. I’m still listening 43 years later.
The guitar on this could win a war all by itself.

I saw the show. The guitarist was a rock'n'roll hero.

I saw this band at the Showplace in Dover NJ. On one song, he was spinning the guitar by the headstock like a top. Never seen anything like that before or since.
"Mercenaries and auxiliaries are useless and dangerous; and if one holds his state based on these arms, he will stand neither firm nor safe; for they are disunited, ambitious and without discipline, unfaithful, valiant before friends, cowardly before enemies; they have neither the fear of God nor fidelity to men, and destruction is deferred only so long as the attack is; for in peace one is robbed by them, and in war by the enemy. The fact is, they have no other attraction or reason for keeping the field than a trifle of stipend, which is not sufficient to make them willing to die for you." Machiavelli, The Prince

My brother saw the great man perform around the time they recorded this show. He said the club was very crowded with people standing shoulder to shoulder. He said that when John Cale took the stage, the whole crowd spontaneously and simultaneously took one giant step back.
I saw him on this tour. Small punk club in San Antonio. So very, very loud. But great.
I loved this song when I was 25 and I still play air guitar listening to it at 66
I was in the audience when this was recorded at CBGB's unforgettable!

I was there, I think, the night before. (Was it a 2-night stand? I have no recollection of the show being recorded.) Possibly the best show I've every seen.
Interesting character John Cale. Classically trained, always ploughed his own furrow, never been a big star, prolific, seems to have made a decent living, one of the few artists who can surprise.
Ohhhhhhhhhhh what great sound
I was a record store manager when this came out. I was delighted when the A&M rep dropped this into my hands upon release.
Saw this show at Bookies Detroit. Front row, priceless pure energy.
enough to make them want to kill for you.....but not enough to make 'em DIE for you!
Brings me back to student dorm times in the eighties. Loved this. Still do.
I love deerfrance !!!
The guitar work is nuts
Saw Cale once in 87 and twice in 88(he'll likely never come through here again) and bought this lp around the same time from a short lived but much missed independent record shop with mostly used but some new stock. The lady I bought it from(her husband was a friend of an acquaintance of mine)remarked on my good taste. Funny what we can recall. At 54 I can still hear her words. Great lp and great shows.
Bought this album in 1980, what a great opening track ! Thrilling stuff by a true master.
This show came to the Whisky, I’ll never forget it! Awesome!!!

Haven't heard this song in years. So glad to have found it again
can't believe my band covered this song back then - we did a fairly good job
Wow, so long since I've heard this tune, love it! The mention of US merceneries in Yemen reminded me of it, nobody has used that term for ages. "Contractor" sounds so much more clean and professional.

SENSATIONAL STUFF - SUCH A GREAT SONG THAT TRAVELS STRAIGHT INTO YOUR GUTS !!!!
I have loved this since I bought the album in 1979. Excellent song to cuddle up with a 50 megaton bomb. Now that's climate change for real.
Mark and I saw this show in the Village together. He did Pablo Picasso too
Awesome.......! ( Live in N.Y.C.)

John Cale - What a visionary man: Ready for war, ready for war Let's go to Moscow, let's go to Moscow Let's go, let's go, let's go to Moscow Fight a backdoor to the Kremlin Push it down and walk on in
Great!!!
OK this song is EXACTLY a perfect describer of the Wagner military mercenary group in the russia v ukraine war. Frighteningly prescient.
was at bottom line NYC when J. CALE played
Solid!
...Leggendario John
the real show was at the Hot Club- South Street, Philly,PA
I saw him at the HOT CLUB in Philly, even hotter than this performance, at the end of the show he threw his drum kit into the audience,However, I'm glad he cleaned himself up or he wouldn't be with us today.

David Blumberg lol i saw him bite the chickens head off in croyden i think! At the marquee club in around 78 he came on stage dressed as a surgeon and sang with his mask on! Amazing live but you are right he got cleaned up otherwise he would have been dead years ago
