I drove about 5 hours from Western Pennsylvania to Philly to see them play this song. After the show, my friends and I waited out back to see if John would come out. He did and even spoke to us for several minutes. I told him that we had hoped to hear his new material on G. Gordon Liddy. But John told us that he had just played it in NYC but that it was not received well. Then some groupie came up behind him and put her arms around him. But he was disgusted and threw her arms off him. We shook hands and said goodbye.

My brother saw the great man perform around the time they recorded this show. He said the club was very crowded with people standing shoulder to shoulder. He said that when John Cale took the stage, the whole crowd spontaneously and simultaneously took one giant step back.

My twin brother and I bought this album on a whim in 1980. We were 17 and record shopping at our local record shop, saw the album cover and both of us knew it had to be something special. We hit the nail squarely on the head that day. I’m still listening 43 years later.

"Mercenaries are useless, disunited, unfaithful, they have nothing more to keep them in a battle, other than a meager wage, which is just enough to make 'em kill for you, but not enough to make 'em die for you." That is the received wisdom, but ... Anthony Lloyd, the Times journalist, reported from Sierra Leone during the civil war on a group of mercenaries who were fighting for the government UNPAID! That is just how bad the situation was in terms of atrocities committed upon the civilian population. Chopping children's hands off was just one of the popular diversions for the rebels. Even mercenaries could not stand for this. I feel Lloyd's report was influential in the British soon after sending in special forces who quickly defeated the rebels. I have never forgotten that - mercenaries fighting without pay.

"Mercenaries and auxiliaries are useless and dangerous; and if one holds his state based on these arms, he will stand neither firm nor safe; for they are disunited, ambitious and without discipline, unfaithful, valiant before friends, cowardly before enemies; they have neither the fear of God nor fidelity to men, and destruction is deferred only so long as the attack is; for in peace one is robbed by them, and in war by the enemy.
