@@EnigmaticPeanut this...is bullshit. If you wanna discuss the difference between brain and mind, i'll get it on that but don't come here with "spirit", trying to talk with authority. The brain is an organ it controls the body, it stores memory and processes electrical signals "like it or not", your mind is your conciousness, your interpretation of the stimulus your brain has processed. Through meditation, the practitioner is supposed to calm their mind so as to gain focus. Spirits come in bottles.

Martial art is not just combat skills but it’s a form of art, because how a practitioner puts people into submission or practices forms can always be articulate; with respect, honor, gentleness, aggressiveness, gracefully, or ruthlessness. That’s why we love seeing high level martial artists perform.

  • @spacecowboy1275

Who said you have to be noble to be a warrior? A warrior is someone who willing chooses to fight, selfish or noble cause included. Take the samurai for example, they practiced Bushido. There was a lot of philosophy in Bushido, some of was for "noble" cause and some of it was about improving ones self spiritually and mentally...as very selfish cause. Martial arts or combat can be a very physical expression of ones philosophy...and as for doing it for monetary gain, if an "artist" is commissioned to paint a picture of the current state of the middle east, there going to be painting a scene based off what they believe to be true. Which is based off of there mind set and morals at the time. Which is based off there philosophical beliefs of life. So, is that artist no longer an artist or philosophical since he did it as a commission or is he still an artist who pored his mind, heart, and soul into that piece or work and made it the best he could at the time?

@Seven V Don't confuse violence with aggression. Men are aggressive, it is part of our nature and our genetic structure and has been necessary for the survival of humankind since before the dawn of civilization. However, violence is an unjustifiable means of aggression. There is also plenty of honor when using aggression in the defense of the innocent, to right a wrong, or to preserve the peace. The philosophy is contained within that discussion of its justification, and to substantiate the use of that aggression.

This is actually the misconception that most people get around Chinese martial arts. What the Chinese refer to as "kung fu", in Mandarin , 功夫 ,it literally means a "lifetime accomplished skill", it can be a martial skill, a cooking skill , a running skill , an acrobatic skill, but most people refer to it as the martial skill used in Chinese martial arts nowadays. Martial art, can be defined into two ways, the skill 武功and the art武術. One focused on its practical application and one emphasizes the deeper layers of its making. Martial skill , is really simple, you do not train for performance, you train for combat, the original purpose of what martial art was created for, to kill. If you're proficient at it, you are learning the martial skill. The way of the art is much deeper , and it's lacking and ignored by most humans nowadays. Why? Because people are more logical and rationalized nowadays, they want quick results, and they want simple and fast. The art is what separates a master from a beginner, for the master knows both the art and the skill. The way of the art in the martial way is subtle, it's like looking at a painting. Some may see it as just a regular painting , whereas some could dwell deeper and gaze into the painting and find its subtle beauty. To know the art in the martial way is to find peace and harmony within one's self , and accept the way, for all there is. As the old saying goes, "The only enemy is yourself" For one who knows the art, he has no more enemies, because he is at peace with himself and in harmony with all there is.

Thank you! I've tried to explain this to people too, but they don't really listen. Another point is that Chinese martial arts and skills are extremely practical in a real fight. Many skills used in UFC stem from Shaolin. It's just "traditional" "masters" give it a bad rep because they don't spar or train like a fighter. So people blame that and the style. When it isn't the style at all. Let me know what y'all think. I am open to to discussion! MA is my passion after all.

Vipsana meditation I believe is what Joe practices concentrating on observing the breathing which is usually a subconscious thing as most of the time your body does it automatically same as your heart beating we are not thinking beat beat beat. So focusing on the breathing stills your mind as your focusing on the now on a subconscious thing but thoughts still rattle around and its mad when thoughts that you have no control come to you it makes you realise that you are not your mind as you the consciousness is observing it. I need to get back in to practising meditation. I think a lot of things can be meditative though as long as your focus is living in the moment not forwards or backwards.

In the Marine Corps they say “war is an art not a science” but they also say “technically and tactically proficient”. Because warfare isn’t just the science of the standoff of differing systems or the knowledge to integrate advanced technology but it’s also how you lead, how you use ambushes and retrograding and these other things that aren’t an absolute solution but are rather what solution you come up with and how well it works

I did tkd almost became a black belt but i was reckless in high school. I transitioned to muay thai and kickboxing and I never told anyone about my tkd background... I had about close to 20 muaythai & kickbox bouts... I have to say... I always felt my tkd background gave me an advantage in terms of my movement ability, speed, agility and defense. Especially when combos on both sides start teeing off and we re both in the pocket exchanging.. my shin always manages to connect with either my opponents body or head. I always had complements of how nice my kicks looked and how hard I was able to swing even in not so good positions. I can tell when MMA fighters didnt have a traditional martial arts background, even if they are pro... with how ugly they re kicks look and they re footwork.

You can't use a bat to defend your family? Rogan is just doing his job as a sales rep for the UFC and MMA, we can not forget that. He can wax poetically about it, but we know where his bread is buttered. Basketball and baseball are forms of competition.. all sports are, and all sports train you to deal with competition in life. As for defending/protecting your family, an arm bar wont help you against a guy with a blade or a gun, so lets slow down with the idea that combat sports are some magical skill that lets you dodge bullets and be impervious to blades. i get what you're saying and he is saying, in my opinion combat sports are just that, a sport and not an art.

Every combat art has rules, granted the UFC has the least rules, but rules none the less. The only true test of battle is combat to the death, everything else is a degree of that. Football and Rugby are brutal sports. Many sports fit the definition you laid out very nicely. The only difference is that MMS is an individual sport so there is more pressure to win. Because Rogan has never played a team sport, he is not aware of what is required of people in team sports. There are different levels to everything. A specialist tennis pro is as gifted as a top level MMS fighter. As for Martial Art and Martial Skill, there is a cavernous gap in MMS/UFC fighters in the spiritual aspects of Martial Arts. They have the mental and the physical, but vast majority lack the spiritual understanding of Martial Arts. That's why I call it MMS, because for you to call it MMA, you must have the spiritual aspects as well. And if you have the spiritual aspect, you would not be a combat fighter.

  • @JordanReedYT

NIK MA (Martial Arts) and combatant competition is a direct expression of what you have learned and what your body can achieve independently. No general sport connects with real life as physical combat does, because the stimuli isn't strong as Fight-or-Flight. I've played baseball, preformed vocally in group choir, practiced MA, and have done extreme sports all of my life, and there is NOTHING that resonates with your natural abilities how fighting does.

Right on this is exactly the point I've been trying to get across to people for years martial art should be an expression of you & yourself there are too many rules because in a fight there is no rules there is just one person trying to take your life martial arts to me anyways in my own personal opinion is something that should flow something you should make a part of you not just when you step on the mat but a part of your everyday life but people get things mixed up when it comes to martial arts personally I believe that it's 90% mental 10% physical if you don't build that strong mental Foundation then if you're not careful you will fail

It's about bettering your mind so you can put your body through harder situations in life. However, nothing is more frightening than a face to face combative situation. That is nothing more than a training exercise at it's most basic form. Enter a dojo and actual learn please. Do just be arrogant and think you know what you're talking about.

@@bingbong6127 After 6 years of training in it, I hate to burst your bubble, but I've seen it done. I never suggested it for mma, because that's stupid. But if you want to go that far, how about you look up this dude named Lyota Machida (who was known for training in aikido, so already your argument is invalid. Please do research before talking.) I only suggested it as a training device to help put your body through more, such as the great Lyota had done. This martial art was made by a 70 year old who still wanted to train. It was never meant to be used in a cage. It's a street-style mainly because out on the street you're not 1. forced into a cage with one another 2. Have multiple ways out 3. no rules and 4. a street fight often derives from more erratic emotions, so its pacifist-approach is perfect. That's where aikido is meant to be used; where emotions are high and you can carry someone's momentum. You can also watch videos that show it's ability on the streets. Sorry dude, but if you haven't seen it done, it's because you haven't been around it long enough. And besides, why would mma fighters, in their 20's and 30's use martial art skills made for 70 year olds? Other than a mental game to help work your grabs/holds it doesn't offer much in a ring. It's also a small-joint effecting style which is illegal in mma.

I watched this video months ago, but thought about it recently because it showed back up on my feed, so please excuse me if I don’t remember Brown’s point well enough. I’m not watching it again. - - - I agree with Brown to a point and respect his experience, toughness, and his views, but when you draw an arbitrary line as to who you do and don’t consider a martial artist (that puts you in the group based on how you express your martial skills), then that line can be drawn by someone else that excludes you. What if a special forces operator who trains in Jiu Jitsu, Krav Maga, western boxing, etc and has used said skills to actually kill terrorists during missions decides that anyone who restricts their martial skills to sport (including MMA) where they are guaranteed a similar-sized opponent, rules/regs, time limits, etc isn’t a true martial artist because they haven’t exercised their martial skills in a truly life or death situation, such as war? The sword Mr. Brown is using can cut both ways.

I think one important concept that gets overlooked is that people get wrapped up in what is effective in a real world scenario, and it is seldom brought up that one of the oldest, most basic, fundamental martial principles is the tactical advantage of having strength of numbers. All the training and fighting skill in the world is a moot point if you don't have security while you sleep, flank security, and the possibility of relief if you are encircled and cutoff from water and other necessities. Strength of numbers is an absolutely fundamental concept in a traditional martial sense, but instead, modern schools that teach even traditional martial arts do so with a focus on fighting as an individual, and not fighting as part of a group. Humor me. Take two hypothetical people. One is a master at individual fighting techniques, he teaches a school of people that all become very effective at these techniques. Another person also has a school, and there they focus on how to coordinate themselves as a group so they maintain security watch 24/7, they always move in coordinated groups and watch each other's backs, communicate effectively, maintain multiply lines and sources of supplies, etc. I consider the first group to be less effective in a martial sense despite that as individuals if you were to isolate them all one on one against each of the other poeple from the other shool one on one, they'd be able to overwhelm them physically, but since that won't ever happen it's a moot point. So I'd say that the second group and that school and their practice of martial arts is more effective in a real sense than the other. Obviously, the best of both worlds is to be function as a well coordinated group fighting together, but that's precisely what i'm saying doesn't seem to be being taught. The modern martial arts are being taught as an individual art, which without recognizing the martial effectiveness of strength of numbers is an entirely moot point. So basically I'm saying that developing as an individual fighter is good, but only to a point, and ego is often what gets in the way.

Musashi also lived in a time when you never walked into combat empty handed and you fought to the death also in the transitional time of Japanese history where he experienced both the end of large scale battles and dawn of a dueling age. Not in the safety of rules and a ring where others couldn't intervene and change the situation drastically. There's many people in competition based arts that just can't see the world apart between the two.

A sport is just a game played competitively, and a game is a structured form of play. So the question is if MMA is a game, which is obviously is as it is definitely not a true "fight" as you would experience in the real world. There is a well defined and structured set of rules governing what you can and can not do. Art, games and work are all forms of self-expression, but calling a sport an "art", or vice-versa, doesnt make either act more or less expressive.

If I understood correctly he said training isn't real martial arts? When something is referred to as an art and you take part in in you're taking part in the art. If you're an amateur painter that never shows your work to anybody you're still making art. If you're taking an art class you're doing just that, not taking an "art skills" class. I can see a distinction between being referring to yourself as an artist such as martial artist, but his statement that competing and expressing it is the art seems pedantic and dismissive of people who work hard to better themselves without wanting to compete.

Lots of strategy, people will discuss how they notice a tell in their opponent’s game, and how they counter it. They’ll also talk about how they take a mental step back (while getting the shit kicked out of them) to reassess their failing plan of attack. I’m sure the mechanical moves like armbar or close guard sweep are just flow, but the overarching direction they take is very much intentional.
