I hate to turn it into a bipartisan thing but the only people complaining about the title are the people's who support canceling people who's world view doesn't align with their own. They are wrong. Canceling is not a tool to be used at the whims of whoever decides they're the correct party, it is destructive, and it is harassment. Harassing people is not okay. It doesn't get to be canceling when it's against someone you don't support and not canceling when it's against someone you do. Harassment is Harassment, full stop. Cancel culture is harmful.

Like I said in an earlier comment, harassment is harassment, it's not suddenly not okay to do just because you don't view it as a just cause. It's not okay to harass people in the first place. Jocat was canceled, despite us both (and xeno) viewing the reasons why as wrong. There is literally nothing clickbaity about it, he was harassed into quitting. That is the goal of cancel culture. You don't get to breed a beast then act surprised when it does what you bred it to do.

The majority of people who are genuinely criticising his video aren't at all interested in that. They don't care. While there ARE people who are bizarrely criticising him for so-called misogyny, you can't necessarily take those at face value. I've read a lot of those comments, and quite many do NOT seem genuine. It's a smoke screen for something else. It's like when a politician who openly uses intimidating language and tactics will pile onto a rival who, for just one moment, used only the SLIGHTEST edginess in their verbiage. "How dare they make threats! It is unbecoming of their office! They need to be fired!" etc. Or maybe a prominent environmental activist appears at a summit in Geneva and in order to get there, they have to travel by plane. Of course they do, because they live on the other side of the world, but suddenly many of their climate change denying critics are piling on to them about their "irresponsible carbon footprint". You see it all the time.

I love that moment of "wait.......what.....where is the problem again?" as soon as the video ends.

The video got dragged outside of his general audience, which liked the video, into groups that would dislike it for whatever reason. I saw supposed feminists saying that it was "coomer brained" and "misogynistic" to objectify women "under the guise of JoCat himself being a feminist". Reactionaries were saying that he was gay and unmanly for liking girls too much. A pincer attack from equally brainrotted twitter goblins who should've gone outside years ago. None of whom were in his audience by the way. That deserves to be known. People initially liked the video. Nothing he did was wrong. He's saying what everyone's already thinking. He was just brave enough to say it earnestly. A lot of guys get shamed for being honest about being into women as more than just a sexual conquest. Like, by contrast, you could look at Andrew Tate. The way that guy talks about women and his sexual interests makes me think he's gay and actually hates women, but he has sex with them out of some societal obligation to collect female trophies. The video is 2 years old at this point, and over that span to today there have been waves of hate that come and go, and the person who caused this recent wave even put out a fake apology that just blamed JoCat himself for adding to the attention the video got. (They also restricted their twitter, the coward) Also saw some people justifying the hate he got, not because of the video, but because they believe that he had previously endorsed harassment of streamers who wanted to play Hogwarts Legacy. He did not. He only said that whatever harassment people got was a smaller issue than trans people being in actual physical danger in this country, which is true, and he followed it up with a crystal clear statement saying that he is not okay with harassment in any capacity. It was really obnoxious, the like 99% of the discourse around the game was centered around trans people and the miserably failed boycott of the game that just made a bad game way more popular.

Yeah, it's important to understand that a lot of the Tate types would be really unhappy having sex with a chick who was enthusiastic back. They're there for the power dynamic, not the sex itself. I don't know how much you actually know about the situation (other people have mentioned it here) but the problem is not that people dislike the video. It's that they've been doxxing him and sending suspicious packages to his family. Jocat isn't stepping back because he's being cancelled. He's stepping back because his family is in literal, physical danger. At that point, what do you even have to do to "not reward them with what they want"? Have your partner, your kids, your parents followed around by bodyguards 24/7?

This was one of Jocat's best skits and it was sad that it caused him to quit content creation.

So context of the video is that jocat we talking to his chat about girls and he sang a spuratic song about the kind of girls he like and then later animated it and added music to it which is awesome.

I'm 30, I can't keep a job, I flunked out of university and I live with my parents. I've never been in a relationship either and I either play games or do nothing all day. I hate myself, I don't blame anyone else for where I am in life. I fucked up a lot and/or things just haven't worked out how I wanted them to. I caught covid more than a year ago and while the rest of my family recovered, I had complications. My circumstances are only different from what you described, in that I have a paper saying that I'm unfit to work. I was advised to seek out a mental health professional and was told that I have severe depression and anxiety. Having an "excuse" to not work doesn't make me feel better and I just don't know what to do with myself, when I don't have the energy to even leave my bed sometimes. I feel stuck, don't know how to move past it, and I can't even imagine how I'd be able to cope with online harassment.

Feel similarly and can relate. I've been trying to get onto the correct meds for a year, and every step of the way I'm brick walled by bureaucratic bs that moves faster than I can. We have socialized healthcare where I am, but the meds I actually need are no longer able to be prescribed by a doctor, only a psychiatrist, who I'm not able to see because my requests keep being rejected with no reason given. The only way I can see someone who can prescribe them is to pay out of my own pocket, but I can't afford to do that because I'm barely getting by week to week as it is, and without my meds, I'm basically a zombie - meds f'd me up, and now I need them to even function normally, and I can't get them, and without them I'm basically non functional. Ugh. It's so frustrating. I'm basically just stuck coping that maybe I'll save up enough money, as the costs keep climbing because of rampant inflation and the growing cost of living while the amount I get every week is stagnant.

Im sure xeno wasn't talking about the people in your shoes when he was talking near the end there. He really just means the people that are like that but are also hateful to other people and take it out on the world; that strive to be as vile as possible to make themselves feel better. YOU and people that are in your shoes that are struggling with hardships doesn't make you any lesser than other people. Just try to never give up, there's always a possibility of climbing out of the pit, even if it looks like there isn't.

What if they're holding up your partner or your kid in front of you with a knife at their throat already? Jocat's family was receiving suspicious packages. They were already potentially in danger. And you just know cops can't do anything until something bad has actually happened. So what would you suggest he do?

It's sad and wild to see people react to a wholesome and chill video this way, but by far the worst was what we don't see, but that he talked about later. He got threats, DMs on discord and twitter, hate and harassment hand delivered to his accounts and even threats aimed at his family and friends, including strange packages being shipped to his (and their?) homes... I respect that he took a step away and maybe left forever, but it's so sad and discouraging to see how the internet can react this way and to defend yourself would just make it worse. I hope he's doing better.

The people doing unwarranted attacks on JoCat come from two directions. 1) The people who never grew out of that "I have to curate myself to be an adult" middle schooler attitude attacking him because it gave them any ammunition they needed to declare him anything they wanted to justify the bullying. His video went viral on Twitter twice far outside the tech and geek centered circles twice leading to constant mockery, accusations of being sexist, anti-trans, a predator, a groomer, a child abuser, all sorts of nasty things. 2) During the Hogwarts Legacy debacle, he ran a charity stream to raise money for Trans rights. Which one side took as a dog whistle for supporting the harassment campaigns against streamers like Pikamee and Silvervale. Then he came out and explicitly said that harassing behavior is awful and unacceptable, which lead some to say, "Oh, so you are ok with them streaming that hateful game? You must secretly be hateful then!" His nuanced take, full of rational empathy and thoughtfulness, greatly angered the most awful people on both sides. JoCat is a sensitive good guy. The sort of person that when attacked apologizes for whatever they did to provoke you. Which is blood in the water for Twitter sharks. Even now you see people commenting unrepentant. "Thank god the cringe lord that made liking women gay is leaving." "Oh so now he has a problem with harassment campaigns." It's also why when Zepla came out defending him and saying this was unacceptable she then got attacked. It's sick, sick people picking on the people who deserve it the least.

Mmmmm kinda doubt it has anything to do with his character design tbh. It's most likely extremists of one end or the other. Either some unhinged bigots who hate him for supporting lgbtq, or some unhinged people on the opposite end of the spectrum who think he's a traitor for promoting a hetero attraction. As a Final Fantasy Enjoyer®, I'm glad he thinks it's not the FF fan base given that the video is 2 years old. It's gotten attention somehow outside his normal viewership. I was in my late 20's working a dead end part time job living out of my parents' basement. I did have education and training and was looking for work in my field, but was just never able to get anything going over the years. I made the ultimate decision to join the military as a last ditch effort in to getting some sort of career and future for myself. It was a tough go, but over 6 years later after joining I finally have settled in in life and a good future. You gotta do what you gotta do to make shit work. I also have no respect for lazy leeches.

When I was a teenager, with awful friends, I said gamer words, both extremely against gay people and people of color, because the friends around me made me think it was ok. Now I would never say those things, and refuse to taik to my old friends who do. But people online wouldn't care that I changed away from that, as long as they found one instance of me doing it when I was younger and more impressionable.

Man, some folks ain't got nothing better to do with their time than to harass people for their likes and dislikes. Like they're the shining example of what's socially acceptable.

i am 25 and ive had no job for 6 years, i used to be like oh i cant get a job and everything is shit, now i have gotten a job i moved out, i feel so much better mentally, im more active physically and i got my shit together, xeno is right in that department, and if you cant do it yourself i think you should seek professional help to get out of that hole.
