Joaquin Phoenix - Oscars Acceptance Speech

"We fear the idea of personal change, because we think we need to sacrifice something; to give something up. But human beings at our best are so creative and inventive, and we can create, develop and implement systems of change that are beneficial to all sentient beings and the environment."
Video originally posted by Now This (nowthisnews.com/).
Full text of the speech:
"I’m full of so much gratitude now. I do not feel elevated above any of my fellow nominees or anyone in this room, because we share the same love - that’s the love of film. And this form of expression has given me the most extraordinary life. I don’t know where I’d be without it.
But I think the greatest gift that it’s given me, and many people in [this industry] is the opportunity to use our voice for the voiceless. I’ve been thinking about some of the distressing issues that we’ve been facing collectively.
I think at times we feel or are made to feel that we champion different causes. But for me, I see commonality. I think, whether we’re talking about gender inequality or racism or queer rights or indigenous rights or animal rights, we’re talking about the fight against injustice.
We’re talking about the fight against the belief that one nation, one people, one race, one gender, one species, has the right to dominate, use and control another with impunity.
I think we’ve become very disconnected from the natural world. Many of us are guilty of an egocentric world view, and we believe that we’re the centre of the universe. We go into the natural world and we plunder it for its resources. We feel entitled to artificially inseminate a cow and steal her baby, even though her cries of anguish are unmistakeable. Then we take her milk that’s intended for her calf and we put it in our coffee and our cereal.
We fear the idea of personal change, because we think we need to sacrifice something; to give something up. But human beings at our best are so creative and inventive, and we can create, develop and implement systems of change that are beneficial to all sentient beings and the environment.
I have been a scoundrel all my life, I’ve been selfish. I’ve been cruel at times, hard to work with, and I’m grateful that so many of you in this room have given me a second chance. I think that’s when we’re at our best: when we support each other. Not when we cancel each other out for our past mistakes, but when we help each other to grow. When we educate each other; when we guide each other to redemption.
When he was 17, my brother [River] wrote this lyric. He said: “run to the rescue with love and peace will follow.”

Being vegan and an animal activist/rescuer for the past 20 years, there is no hope left in me for humanity. To hear him speaking like this felt like a dream. I am not trying to convince you not to be a vegan, because there are many good reasons to be one, but allow me to widen your horizon, so you can base your decisions on good ground. It is not only possible, but quite easy to get milk from cows that lives a good life. In modern farms the cows willingly comes up to the automated milking machine to get milked. I have even seen milk from cows where the calf wasn't taken away. Buy products from producers that treat animals with dignity and it is totally possible to enjoy animal products ethically. Again I am not trying to talk you out of veganism, I just want to give you a broader perspective.

@UCImw9TKIO_kR7pSmkFhXDqg Firstly I rarely drink milk at all, so I am not "so attached to cows udder milk". Secondly healthiness is more about the amount you consume rather than the product itself. Too many carrots can give you the same effects as drinking too much alcohol. Thirdly no food is meant for us (except human breast milk), so it is a moot point. If we can consume it without issue, then it is good enough for us and many people doesn't have any bodily issues with milk. Fourthly no they are not enslaved, they are domesticated and raised. You can find farms where they live a rather nice life. Furthermore are plants growing in fields enslaved? They are at least as much controlled by humans as the animals. Lastly yeah having farm animals have an effect on the environment, but so does making movies, so why do you watch them, you can easily entertain yourself in a way with less damage on the environment? See everybody can do the blame game, but we have to draw the line somewhere and you shouldn't let perfection be the enemy of doing good, so tone down your judgment.

If dog milk were viable I have no issue with that as well. I also would have no issue with having to do it myself (even though I don't see the need to drink from the utters, when I could simply milk the cow). I have killed, plucked and cooked my own chicken and I have more respect for the animal and the treatment of it after I did it, so I think it is educating to see and be part of the process of food production. Lastly, natural? Show me one natural vegan produce and I will show you a thousand that are not. Hardly anything we eat is natural anymore. It is all cultivated to fit our needs and desires. Look at the banana for example, it used to be round and with a lot of seeds, better not eat that, it is not natural anymore. Same goes for almost everything else you eat. So who is hypocritical now, you refuse to eat something because it is not natural, but still consume almost exclusively on cultivated, unnatural produce?

Everytime I rewatch and listen again to this speech I love it more and more. This man was able to talk about very, very important topics without seeming selfish and too politically correct. He encouraged all the people to be better humans without praising himself in the first place, in fact he apologized for his incorrect past-behaviour. A true gentleman. He also quoted his brother, which can seem like a forced thing to do at the end of a speech like this, but he was quick (also because he had tears in his eyes and he could barely speak, obviously) and clear and it was the perfect way to end it. I admire this man.
