ALBUMOF2008 these people say these banal political speeches, only to be the worst offenders. You know shortly after his golden globes speech talking about leaving less of a carbon footprint by using air travel less, he took a plane to a climate change protest. Not to mention most of these people have been complicit in letting sexual predators, and worst of all pedophiles run wild in the film industry. Not to mention the nominations and winners are decided by Hollywood itself basically, so all the awards are really just them patting themselves on the back. There’s also the fact that most of these people have done shitty things to their families in part because of their careers, seeing how divorce is quite rampant in the film industry. These people are cancerous, not brave or empathetic.

Award ceremony, like BAFTA and Oscar, are responsible to choose the BEST, not the color...so don't blame Oscar, don't blame BAFTA...In fact, it is the 'film industry' (Warner Brother, SONY, PARAMOUNT, Disney, etc) who should give equal chance to men and women, black and white and yellow.

As I watched the Joker, I could feel the pain he was going through. The longing for acceptance was something we all crave rather we want to admit it or not. You could feel his need for acceptance, how he longed for making sense of the life and hand he was delt. Joaquin 100% gave his all to the portrayal of the Joker that gave us insight into the character like no other had ever done. His speech let us know he had searched his soul long and hard, and took a huge risk to stand up for what he knew was right. He deserves every recognition for his role and for being a person of character! Congrats Joaquin 👏🏽

@@Wavy_Godd96 that's false. Only in the last 3 decades has there been an insurgency of more and more black actors and actresses in the film industry. It's always been white dominated not for racial prejudice but because mostly white people went to school for acting. Virtually every year now many people of color deservedly win awards or are nominated for great performances. Hattie McDaniel won an Academy Award in 1939. Then two decades later it was Sydney Portier. Now, it's Denzel, Whoopi, Octavia, M'onique, Jennifer Hudson, Halle Berry, Viola Davis, Morgan Freeman, Lupita Nyong'o, Forrest Whitaker, Mahersala, Cuba Gooding Jr., etc. Etc. Etc.....I could go on and on. And the list of nominees of color, not just black, would look like a book of scrolls if I spent the time to post. To say there is systemic racism in an industry where the very actors and actresses who are in the industry are the very people ANONYMOUSLY VOTING would discredit Joaquin's "brave" (mainstream) bullshit statement

It's the 'flight' response on the 'fight or flight' scale, and it means nothing about how strong a person is. It just means that an introvert would react to trauma and distress the same way he reacts to everything else: taking it in and internalizing.

Yeah, as a white person myself, I really admire this speech as what I think is a great example of genuine allyship! (not that I'm an authority on that.) He wasn't using the platform to be self aggrandizing, and it didn't come across at all as though he was trying to speak for or over people of color, which can sometimes be the case. Instead, he acknowledged himself as part of the system that's the problem as well, and said "we ALL, collectively, as white people, need to step up and work to right these wrongs that have left people of color at a disadvantage while benefiting us." This isn't revolutionary or something particularly deserving of massive amounts of praise given that it's what people of color have been saying forever- but it IS something far too rarely reiterated and reaffirmed by white people, especially white people who have a platform, so I do respect Joaquin a lot for using his platform to step up :)

I think some people seem to conflate it with being afraid to say "black people" or something, but I think that misses the point that it's meant to highlight how there are MANY people who are deemed "not white" and who face various barriers due to that fact. Obviously if we're talking about issues specific to black people, I'd say "black people", "latino people" if it's issues particular to Latin American people, etc. :) (also, for the record, I use that term because it's the term I've personally heard non-white people use in these conversations- I would certainly not presume to be the determiner of what the label should be!)

@@bradtorville5526 He dressed up to come to the ceremony. He's honoured to be amongst the talented. He's pointing out how alot of other talent is missing in the industry and from said ceremony. Hell he actually forgot the award and was reminded about it. It was more important for him to be able to address the people. All because he's a great actor. We call these people true role models. To discredit him just because he accepted the award would return the playing field to the status quo. It would depower his speech and make it so people of colour continue to go unrecognized in the industry. It's almost as if you need him to be your idea of perfection and if he's not then we might as well have the people he's trying to help suffer because "no one is perfect so maintain the status quo and let them continue to suffer". You didn't say all of that just now right? I mean you're essentially saying he just lied on stage and that his actions don't coincide with his words because he simply accepted an award that he deserves. The way a logical person who really wants to see change would see it is as follows: The winner of the award used his award ceremony platform to shed light on a problem that even undermines and devalues the award that was granted to him. He accepted the award for being good, but also for being privileged and he even said he was troubled by it. That is the message. Spinning it some other way says more about you then it does about him.

Many people tend to forget that three of the most critically acclaimed female performances of the year were women of color and were not nominated at the BAFTA (Lupita Nyong'o ''US'', Akwafina ''THE FAREWELL'' and Jennifer Lopez ''HUSTLERS''). Renée Zellweger got all the 4 major awards (Golden Globe, BAFTA, Critics Choice Award and SAG Award), but Lupita Nyong'o got most of the Best Actress citations from major critics association all across the US. Awkwafina was also stellar and got many recognition is many film festivals. Even British actress Cynthia Erivo who was nominated in most major awards, including the Oscars, didn't get a nomination at the BAFTA, in her own country. And Jennifer Lopez also won most of the critics awards in the US for HUSTLERS and was much more deeper than Laura Dern. Yet none of them were nominated. So it's not about handling free nods to PoC, it's about recognizing them when they do good work, and they did. But it's more easier to notice Scarlett Johansson and Margot Robbie to the point of giving them two nominations each then recognizing performances from PoC.

I don't see any of these awards as rewarding good performances any more than which actor or actress or movies the members of academy and bafta related to. Obviously these are all Oscar bait movies, Joaquin was good but all his performances are for the awards. It's because this movie is on a popular character that it was loved by audience. But joker wasn't great and it's ridiculous that this movie and not any one of the Nolan Batman series got that many nominations. Not surprised that Us or Hustlers or Farewell didn't get nominated for performances. Rather Little Women, Bombshell or Judy are more comfortable for members to award. Dont get me started on brad Pitt getting awards for playing himself.

I felt it more specifically to do with classism really, that’s what I took away from it. In regards to what he said, I’m 50/50 on it. It’s more down to opportunity then selecting actors of colour, and it’s more down to the opportunity for writers. If you give more opportunities to black writers, you get more opportunities for black actors. It’s not say ‘we should get rid of some white creators to make way for black ones’ but more so ‘let’s just have some more seats at the table’ I’m all for that. I just hate this argument where ‘if there are no white people here this year then it’s racism’. It’s not addressing the real problem. Credit to him though.
