One of the funniest things I’ve ever seen involved Dick Murdoch at the Greenville (SC) Memorial Auditorium back in the late ‘80’s. After getting atomic dropped by The Italian Stallion, Murdoch’s face contorted into this cartoonish mask of pain, after which he started gingerly stepping forward on his tippy toes until he did this little ballerina’s hop before finally crumpling to the mat in a heap. Stallion was good enough to just stand there with his hands on his hips watching the silliness along with us fans. It still cracks me up almost 40 years later.

In his book, Cowboy said that to make his point he just withheld it from the payouts, but claimed that he would unofficially pay it back in future payouts. He just wanted his wrestlers on time and didn’t want the fine money.

As a mark in the 80s Murdoch would piss me off cause I could tell as a teenager what a talent he was…but he would act so goofy especially when he took a punch or big bump. I would think why does he do that shit?? He could really move and he threw a punch that looked great on tv.

Murdoch could have been World Champion if he ever chose to be serious about it, but he never was. Dick enjoyed hanging out with the boys, playing cards, drinking beer, and having fun, he had little career ambition beyond that. That and he had a twisted sense of humor that didn't seem to have an Off Switch.

I wanna know what the "comedy" was? Terry Funk matches were always funny in some way, justified comedy that Funker made look like a coincidence.

Bill Watts said the same thing in his book, "The Cowboy and the Cross". He felt that BOTH Dick Murdoch and Terry Funk could be too silly to be the NWA World Heavyweight Champion. He KNEW that they BOTH were great workers and could work as a face or heel,....but he felt that the NWA Champion should NEVER be "silly" or "comedic" during their matches or promos. That was his only gripe with Terry being Champion, and he felt it held Dick back from being Champion.

Murdoch would have been a great champion. Sure, champions need to be tough guys. Harley Race was that but he brought nowhere near the entertainment value of Dick Murdoch.
