Short term thinking, over-reliance on the NWO, not pushing enough new talent, too much guaranteed money, giving Hogan creative control, Vince ‘the egomaniac’ Russo…and ultimately the Time Warner merger.

The numbers at the end were still decent. WCW was getting numbers AEW can only dream about today. Creative fell off but that wasn't at all why it failed. WWF had birth giving to hands among other things that were just as bad as anything WCW had. If I had to only name one person that killed WCW, it would be Jamie Kellner who cancelled the tv slot.

Part of it was not enough corporate control over Bishof when he spent money like a drunk sailor then too much control resulting in the fire sale at the end. WCW could have been a valuable property for a media company needing original content to fill air time. And so many potential revenue streams with WCW were possible. Now a little over 20 years later, the same cable channel is paying another promotion a lot of money for a fraction of the audience watching the WWE show.

I think it's a multifaceted reason. One reason was that Bischoff failed to grasp the company politics of the time due to lack of experience working in a corporate environment. Said lack of grasp made him due risky decisions which helped it at first but screwed him in the end when he lost Ted Turner as a shield. Before he only had to worry about what the big guy thinks but after he lost power he had sharks all over him. Said sharks didn't want wrestling at all and would have found any excuse to get rid of it. So when shit hits the fan around 2000 it was pretty much done. While WCW might have still ended up closing if things were good, because things weren't good it meant that it was easier to convince people to sell it as scrap. The TV and Advertising executives did not see any value in wrestling and saw said viewers as nothing more than gutter trash. So basically losing Ted's protection was the death knell of WCW as Bischoff didn't have the leadership experience to deal with Corporate politics and said politics meant that he would have an uphill battle in doing his job.
@philliplandry4139

I think Bill Shaw was the one that was pushing to get WCW off the air because it wasn't making any money and that was before Time Warner Merger. Bischoff even explained when he first took over as executive vice president, Shaw and even Ted Turner were threatening to pull the plug from the company and that was back in early of 94.
@gsogden113 күн бұрын
It’s a stupid question of who killed WCW. Time Warner killed WCW. It’s a simple answer. Time Warner hated wrestling and didn’t think it was a money maker. Time Warner has destroyed a lot of other forms of TV.

@jim-elliott nothing more annoying than somebody banging on about their health or going in about their ill health and expecting doctors to fix it etc meanwhile continuing to do the thing causing or at least contributing to to your ill health yet expecting us to have sympathy with you. They never talk about the addiction being their problem when it's nicotine & smoking but when it's a coke head, crack addict or an alcoholic etc and they have health issues, nobody just goes along with it. As if it's a big mystery what's causing their poor health & gives them sympathy. They go on about their addiction and encourage them to get help for it! The only difference is that one seems to still be a social acceptable addiction and the others aren't. They don't say you need to get help to quit your habit to regain your health. They just expect the health treatment but don't want to quit smoking. Rally pisses ne off a lot 😤 just imagine the alcoholic or cokehead just expected not only the acrual healthcare but sympathy for being able to keep going on with the addiction after they got a liver or heart issue treated. Then did the drug or was drinking on camera whilst telling everyone how they had a close call & was out of hospital now 🤔

Mostly true, but in my opinion I got sick of NEVER seeing a clean finish from 1997-2000. Just when a match was starting to heat up and get good, there would be a run-in and spoil the action, usually a DQ finish or some type of shenanigans to spoil a title change. It happened way too often. Whenever they would announce a marquee match on Nitro, I often thought to myself "What's the point? We all know how it's going to end". It was bad enough that it happened in nearly 100% of Nitro's main events, but it was also happening in ppvs. I got sick of it and tuned out. So much talent, such poor booking.
@mikebryant614
12 күн бұрын
Bingo, and in addition to the entirely predictable run in outside interference beat down endings, WCW had a pretty bad habit of advertised Matches never even taking place at ALL thanks to pre Match beat downs, or " that dont work for me , Brother" shenanigans or other antics, this even happened at PPV's. You dont build a business on failing to deliver scheduled and advertised matches and/or baiting and switching the Fans.

Ultimately I feel what killed WCW was the big money they threw and if they hadn't done that if they had been just a little more conservative played their cards a little closer to their chest didn't leap in as much but they were trying to make every move that they could make and if you've ever played like even a card game you don't play every move you can make usually not all the time

I agree with JR here; I don't really think one single person can be blamed for what happened to WCW. A company that big can only really be "killed" by a perfect storm of almost everyone at the top all making bad decisions at the same time. Basically, the answer to the question of who killed it is this: Everyone.
@ShadowAngel-lt8nw
2 сағат бұрын
Except it absolutely was 1 person: Brad Siegel. He gave Vince the right of first refusal if WCW should be sold. After that it was just a waiting game for Siegel until Turner loses his power or dies. When that happened with the AOL merger, Siegel and his good buddy Stu Snyder set everything in motion and killed WCW for good.

People tend to be lazy, when looking for something or someone to blame when things go wrong they like to boil it down to One Person or One Thing, but real life is rarely that simple. Bottom line, Business 101, the buck always stops at the top, it wasn't one person or one thing that ended WCW, it was a whole bunch of things done by a whole bunch of people making bad decisions. It was Ted Turner, it was Jim Herd, it was Kip Frye, Eric Bischoff, Ole Anderson, Bill Watts, and a hundred nameless suits at AOL/Time-Warner who had no idea how to run a wrestling show. And yes, Russo was in the mix too, though by the time he came in that coffin was already built, he just brought the shovel.

Bischoff should get credit for the build… though we should always remember that his biggest idea was just an angle he got from Japanese companies. His poor handling of the NWO story and its ending was perhaps the start of the downfall… He wasn’t solely responsible for the fall… but he played a big role
@hygrave289213 күн бұрын
Glad Jim says it the way it is. WCW was almost dead several times before Eric Bishoff took over. To a long term fan, I remember when Mid South became the UWF, in my mind, Mid South was done, and for all intensive purposes, it was. WCW was never going to survive, simply because it was a southern rooted, changed in many areas, yet lagged behind in others. Had Hogan never turned heel, it wouldn't have lasted as long as it did, even with Nash and Hall on board.. Sh** happens, like the song says, no one is to blame. We enjoy what we had, and at least have the footage to go back and watch, as these years go by.
@philliplandry4139

It was dead on arrival. Many loyal fans accepted it at first when Ted first bought it, then he kick the Crocketts out and brought Jim Herd in. When Herd were managing the company for the first three years, it lost a lot of loyal fans from the south. When Bill Watts came in and brought back the many elements what made Crockett successful. It was too late.

Yes my friend, the territory was already on life support, going back to after the 86 Stattcade event. Even Arn Anderson says after 1986, he knew it was a matter of time. People love to place blame on those involved, yet they were the smart ones. They got their money off a sinking ship before the ship sunk. Anyone blaming anyone else needs to stop the scapegoat syndrome and be thankful it ever happened at all. Cheers brudda, thank you for the astute reply. Very rare indeed on the internet these days.

All the usual things that get brought up regarding why WCW went under, such as the finger poke of doom or rehashing the NWO, etc are all pretty much irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Yes, these are things that affected the popularity of the brand during that time, but even when the company was riding high all the corporate suits were still trying to get rid of it. There are other promotions today such as TNA that have actually lasted longer and have had way worse quality at times than WCW ever did and it's still around because the people that own it actually want it around. WCW for all intents and purposes was the red headed step child of AOL Time Warner.

I’ll make it simple as someone who watched. The NWO storyline went on for too long. Hogan was the titleholder for too long. What made WCW also broke it. If they would have destroyed it with the rebirth of Sting, that would have been a satisfactory conclusion to that storyline. And by 99 the Attitude era was in full swing and I found myself switching from TNT to USA after the midcard matches. JR said it himself. It’s all about putting a$$e$ in seats. The ego can’t be indulged at the expense of the show. PS if you’re headed back to work, I have 2 suggestions. First, please see if you can convince Schiavone and Jericho to come up with a talk show/news outlet for development online and if successful launch it to pad some of the programming on cable. Your contract cannot begrudge efforts to pursue the 18 to 35 demographic. If you did this, you’d avoid the lack of chemistry between Schiavone and Taz while giving Jericho what he really wants is TV time. Second, please consider at the least a Kayfabe commissioner and underhanded assistant as the main drivers of the storylines. That way the show goes in no matter who is on the shelf. PS please tell your edgy acquaintance that he’s now Mr. Cope, because he’s at home coping after jumping off of a cage for the benefit of an Undertaker wannabe. Ha ha ha

Jim Herd, Bischoff, Time Warner executives, Russo, wrestlers running the roost. Poor utilization of talent, horrible story lines, squandering and diluting the impact of the NWO. Perhaps a death by a thousand cuts. But WWF took the time to reinvent itself and just put on a better show. Better story lines, characters the fans got behind. And everybody from the top to the bottom of the card got a piece of spotlight in the attitude era. Once fans turned the channel to Raw , it was over for the WCW. So ultimately WWE/WWF killed WCW IMO.

They couldn't kill it while Bischoff was in charge because it still neck and neck with WWF at the time but they could demote Bischoff and bring in Ed "The stupid Ferret" Ferrera and Vince "Lets have a "Fill in the blank" on a pole match" Russo to kill it so they could justify to the inverstors that selling it off was the best thing to do because it no longer made Time-Warner money.

He’s in his 70s how does he suppose to look?

It’s a stupid question of who killed WCW. Time Warner killed WCW. It’s a simple answer. Time Warner hated wrestling and didn’t think it was a money maker. Time Warner has destroyed a lot of other forms of TV.

Then did the drug or was drinking on camera whilst telling everyone how they had a close call & was out of hospital now 🤔
Great to see you back JR
@mikebryant614

Yea i stopped watching nitro summer of ‘99 , but WWF was bad in 1999 as well it was just a bad year in my opinion

@ShadowAngel-lt8nw
Jim ross lightning up a cigarette mid interview 😂😂😂😂, badass
Bischoff himself wasn't prepared, nor did he prepare WCW as a company, for the boom that started in mid '96. It was bad business all around.
Glad to hear Jim is out of the hospital. Would really love to see him and Lawler at the desk one last time. Hear me out - Attitude Era Battle Royale at next years WM. Homage to the Gimmick one at WM17. The King and JR commentating. Just seeing all those entrances again would be amazing
I certainly didn't expect JR to lite up a dart mid clip lol
Aww man this will be the best episode yet!
I’m enjoying the rattling sound in the background. It makes it way easier to concentrate and listen.
The time/warner merge happened before the 83 weeks of WCW glory
Sadly, J.R. does not look long for this world...
Glad to see ole J.R. Is feeling better.
Bischoff should get credit for the build… though we should always remember that his biggest idea was just an angle he got from Japanese companies. His poor handling of the NWO story and its ending was perhaps the start of the downfall… He wasn’t solely responsible for the fall… but he played a big role
@philliplandry4139
12 күн бұрын

I've always thought JR has the coolest headset for his podcast. It looks like the one he uses on commentary! Anyone know what kind it is? Love the podcast.
There were a lot of factors leading to the decline and death of WCW. Overall it was the merger. But the out of control spending, declining viewership, and poor quality of the product led to the company’s end!
I started watching wwf because damn near every match in wcw was interference or straight up DQ from random NWO member. After a while it became pointless to watch because you knew the outcome already.
Good to see JR OK in OK.

The company for letting the same wrestlers do whatever they wanted to do n no consequences to their actions. Manly Hulk Hogan and Kevin Nash n the higher ups for not keeping a hold on the company. They should of let the new talent thrive and the order wrestler should have been mentors n helped them get over to elevate each other's careers
Hope your feeling better..
Yes you can. It's very simple it all starts with leadership from top to bottom.

Hey whats going on Jim
Ha ha ha
😊jim Ross i sure hope you get to feeling better very soon
El Dandy not getting his push killed WCW.
Bischoff was the Manson but those like Nash + Russo were the Patricia Krinwinkle and Tex Watson of the horrible end to WCW.
❤
Finger Poke of doom was crap and both Nash and Hogan should've been sent home. Starrcade 1998 should've been Booker T vs Goldberg. Booker T was the hottest mid carder and was getting over with fans
is there a Geiger counter somewhere?
Hogan hall nash flair herd russo bischoff all seven were responsible for wcw demise
Who killed WCW !!!! Eric Kevin Nash and Hulk Hogan !!!
It was Robo cop and David Arquette and Chucky and the triple cage match that killed wcw
Sure, I’ll buy that there were many people at fault for the WCW’s downfall, but Russo’s booking was the death blow. There was no coming back from Judy Bagwell on a poll or Vince booking himself as champion or BATB 2000.
Looking thinner Conrad
Um absolutely you can. Bischoff was to blame. If he had pulled his head out of Hogan's ass they wouldn't have needed to bring in Russo he wouldn't have had the issues in the locker room he had etc
I'm just surprised no one has blamed AEW!
How about the executives at Turner that couldn't keep up with the hotshot style the WWF was using, ala Jerry Springer?
Contacts, ego's not seeing the big picture with new blood rising or pushing new people. Lucky wrestler's jump ship at the right time. Because we seen what happen when Vince bought it, and how he killed the Invision angle and westler's in a year.😮😮😮😮
Dwayne Bruce killed WCW.
My opinion. WcW died because the Fans left for the WWF/WWE. What Ed ferrara did was unforgivable. The lucha "Pianta on a pole" was unforgivable. They took legacy and NWA history and S*** all over it. HOW in ANY WAY did Vince russo believe it would work? The company should have stayed with E.B.I It also didn't help that aol time warner didn't want WCW syndicated. No Network, No show.

I disagree with J.R., sorta, I think he's right that the Suits didn't like wrestling and didn't want it on their station but I don't they themselves killed it, They demoted Bischoff and brought in Ed Ferrera and Vince Russo to kill it for them.

All the wrestlers blame Hogan, but they’d have accepted the same benefits that he was afforded if they could, but nobody made enough money for the business to have that ability. I have no sympathy for the whining wrestlers who hate Hogan.
WWE is boring now 😴😴😴👎👎👎. Best WWE era was Attitude Era 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Blame yourself JR, for destroying Buff Bagwell's career.

Buff killed his own career by being irresponsible and thinking he was all that when he came to a new working environment.

@@Epsilonsama Yeah, Buff was the one who spread lies that his mother called WWE office, sure, don't ever question your saint JR.

@@Weasel3001Did you watch Dark Side of the Ring? Buff had his mom and his whole family on payroll. She was employed by him. If she was shaving his freaking balls, what makes you think it's impossible that she called JR to tell him that Buff couldn't come to work?
This guy has had health problems for like 40 years. Why can't he get himself in order???
