@mr.smithgnrsmith7808 I'm from Cow Hampshire, just like Jim Florentine. Rockingham County, specifically, which shares a border with Massachusetts. It's known throughout New England that people from Massachusetts are called "Mass-holes." The East Coast gets progressively more sour and cynical the farther north you go. I will concede that Baltimore is full of assholes. But with all due respect, it's no New York City... which is no Boston...

I worked as a cashier for too many years and it was the customers that were annoying as fuck. I wish they were like Jim but they weren't. Stupid shit like "it's Monday", "working hard or hardly working?" or some stupid joke that they expect you to laugh at and get mad if you don't. I could write a book about all of my experiences behind the counter. I hated every minute of it.

Yup. All the time. I worked retail for three years and I absolutely hated it. Until you have to put up with customer-bullshit in that context you will NEVER get it right or understand. For anyone who ever wonders, no cashier in history has EVER wanted to say ANYTHING to ANY customer they ever see at ANY given time during a day. EVERYTHING that comes out of their mouth is because they're told to say it and act a certain way or they'll lose their job. It's as simple as that. I NEVER gave a shit about any customer I ever had. Like ever. For anything. I was nice because I was told to be nice. When you have to take nonsense and bullshit all day from customers who are mostly all dumber than you, it is absolutely infuriating. So yeah, if you ever get mad at a cashier for anything, 98% of the time you're just shooting the messenger. You're making their life worse despite nothing being their fault. If you want to talk to a manager, ask for a manager--they're the ones calling the shots and pulling all the strings. But berating the person behind the register is fucking stupid, gets you nowhere and you are a fucking idiot if you ever do it. But go ahead, make their life worse and make them feel like shit because you're too stupid, ignorant and careless to even think about the situation or structure for more than ten seconds. It is HARDLY EVER the cashier's fault. If you want to bitch then find a manager. If not keep your fucking mouth shut and leave. There is no other reasonable option. Just clearing up those objective facts because people who never worked retail really don't seem to get this. Dumb Customer Dialogue would be INFINITELY more appropriate.

I miss Radio Shack though. I don't have as much of a need now for the main resource they offered though: technical assistance. People don't realize before the internet, it would be a challenge to even know what you needed (or parts/adapters that were available). I could always find atechnical person that worked at Radio Shack that would assist. Whereas in a larger store like Best Buy, often the employees would just brush you off (or they didn't care to learn anything about what they were selling).

With the restaurant rant, I'm surprised Jim didn't bring out this particular situation which - to be quite honest - really pisses the fuck out of me. It's when you're eating out with a group of people and the waiter/waitress starts bringing out the main dishes for only some of the group and not the whole table, and not because he or she can't carry all the dishes at once, it's because the other dinners weren't ready yet. Now, the whole mood of the table is interrupted because those of us who got our food feel obligated to start eating so the dish doesn't get cold, while everybody else has to start wondering "when's my plate coming?". The whole atmosphere changes, the conversation is no longer flowing smoothly, and everybody starts feeling ill at ease because everybody's no longer on the same page, so to speak. Hey restaurant workers, here's a tip: Okay, some dishes get cooked and prepared faster than others, okay, I get it. But why the fuck don't you just keep the ones that are prepared first under a hot lamp, or in an oven warmer, until all the other meals are done, and then bring everything out together at the same time, so everybody can enjoy their meals together? Or is that too fucking complicated to figure out?

Restaurants do keep that sort of thing in mind. If a server is bringing out the entrees in segments, I'm confident that one of two things is happening: either the server is making a rookie error, or there is no room under the heat lamp. I'm sure this happens almost exclusively during prime lunch and dinner hours. Unless there is an absurd amount of time between entrees arriving at the table, I would quantify this as a very tolerable event.

It's all a dance to show the company that their cashier is working, when they already have other tasks. Corporate culture could go a long way on treating their employees like the grown-ups they deserve to be treated, and insisting on a forced conversation that the customer doesn't even want is not treating your employee like an adult.
