    Jim Edmonds is one of the best center fielders to play the game. When the Cardinals acquired him from the Angels, I went nuts. Everyone else was talking about how he wasn't a team player, bad influence in the clubhouse, but I knew EXACTLY what we were getting, and that was a spectacular fielder that had good power too.

    It is an absolute crime that this man isn't in the HoF. He made so many iconic plays. His offense was well above average. His game-winning HR is game 6 of the '04 NLCS was amazing and his catch to save the game the next night made him a legend in my eyes. His defense was absurdly good. I don't understand how someone who is an EIGHT TIME GOLD GLOVER could just be cast aside the way he was. Either way, STL will always love ya, Jimmy!

    He has a 132 ops+ and 8 gold gloves. I don't know what's keeping him out of the hall. You can't tell me freaking Harold Baines is a HOFer, but Edmonds isn't, Edmonds has almost 30 more career WAR. What are we doing?

    The fact that this guy fell off the HoF ballot after the first year is an absolute joke. He should be in on his defense alone. When you look at his offensive numbers in St Louis its staggering that he couldn't get enough votes to stay on the ballot.

    This also happens to many Astros and guys like Curt Schilling. They've let guys in who did roids without question. Look at Ozzie Smith... for some reason, he got into the Hall of Fame. Or look at Albert Belle, he deserved to get some votes, but did not. It's political. How does Mussina get in over Schilling?

    Y Marina, Jones was also great defensively, but for my money I’d rather have Edmonds in my centerfield. The guy played so shallow that he robbed tons of hitters of cheap little singles, while also being able to go back and catch just about any ball hit deep to center. Jones played a much deeper center field and had better range to the gaps, and a superior arm, but I’m willing to bet that in the long run Edmonds’ strategy saved more runs than Jones’ did. The runs saved stat doesn’t accurately account for wildly different strategies, so I kind of throw that out the window in this case. And as far as hitting goes, give me Edmonds’ best 8 years over Jones’ best 8 years. That being said, I think they should both be Hall of Famers.

  • @AV57

    @AV57

    Edmonds deserves to be in the Hall. Playing center field is, perhaps, the toughest way into the Hall of Fame. Guys like Mays and Snider set the bar so damn high that now any center fielder that doesn’t produce like them is seen as a poor hitter. It’s odd, because centered field is one of those position any head manager will sacrifice hitting for defense, yet the writers don’t seem to grasp that strategy when voting. The writers expect center fielders to hit like left fielders and first baseman, and then pay very little attention to their fielding. Edmonds was legitimately among the top 5-7 center fielders ever in terms of hitting over a 10-year period. On top of that, he won several gold gloves, was a leader on a team that always competed for a World Series and had several huge playoff hits, throws, and catches. But the writers didn’t care about that. All they saw was that he came short of 2,000 hits.

    @Y Marina Curious, why are Gold Gloves overrated? Edmonds is universally regarded as one of the best OFers in recent memory and without question one of the greatest defensive CFers in the game's history. He's tied for 4th most Gold Gloves by an outfielder in history and apparently has more wall-climbing and diving catches in CF than anyone since the invention of the television for what it's worth, according to a number of baseball statistics websites. He made the difficult plays look routine and had a flair for the dramatic as he owns a number of the most lauded and famous catches of not just his era, but all time. I think he deserves to just make the Hall.

    Are the writers out of their minds? Get this guy back on the ballot!!! Jim Edmunds had a rock solid major league career for 17 years. I’ve been watching baseball over 55 years and he’s made catches other centerfielders wouldn’t even attempt, defensive genius, and a great hitter and a complete player. Jim stacks up very well against outfielders who are in the HOF. He merits serious consideration and I think most baseball people( players, coaches, managers and GM’s) would say he belongs in the HOF.

  • @TexasPsychoK

    Agreed. I wonder how guys like Albert Belle(robbed of two MVPs, and 2 or 3 all-star appearances)leave the game with injuries at the age of 33, Bagwell, Kent and guys like Edmonds have trouble getting in when Jim Rice, Frank Thomas, and liabilities on defense and on the bases get in. Guys like Trammel, Edmonds, Rolen who played both sides of the field should easily get in. Certain guys have gotten regardless of PED rumors(Piazza and obviously Henderson.) Ozzie Smith is in, but couldn't hit for shit. And I'll take Larkin in his prime over him on defense. And Trammel of course... the dude could hit but was slowed by injuries. Vlad the Impaler and Bagwell have to make it, but they're busy talking about Rollins belonging while Kent, Whitaker, Trammel, and others just get forgotten. I'm guessing that Utley and Kinsler will have trouble unless they can put a few 35 homerun seasons to end their careers, haha. If Pettitte and his 3.85 career ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 2.37 k/bb ratio gets in... wow. Schilling belongs. I thought that Biggio was a first ballot hall of famer, but goes to show what little I know.

  • @ThatWiffleGuy

    @ThatWiffleGuy

    I'm gonna have to disagree. He's a great player but I don't think you can put him the same conversation with DiMaggio, Mantle, Mays, Tris Speaker, Ty Cobb...etc. The center fielders in the Hall right now, including the ones I just named are some of the best hitters EVER to play the game. The problem in Edmonds case is that he's not even the best hitter of his time. Yes, you can say he was arguably the most defensively inclined (although you will get a run for your money from the Griffey fans) but its very hard to make the Hall of Fame on that alone. Unfortunately Edmonds was never finished better than 4th in MVP voting, hit over .300 just 5 times in 17 seasons, and actually for all of his Gold Gloves he allowed -7 Defensive Runs Saved. Edmonds was a great player yes, but he just doesn't stand up against the greats as you suggested.

  • @jimmyp4510

    @jimmyp4510

    7 жыл бұрын

    lol you don't have to be one of the greatest players ever to be in the hall. You're comparing edmonds to dimaggio and mays like only players of their caliber were inducted. In that case, there would be like 30 players in the HOF. Ozzie only batted .262 his entire career, and he still made it in with his amazing defense. Meanwhile Edmonds had spectacular fielding, a great average, and could easily hit 30 homers a season, and for some reason he's not in.

    Keep in mind Griffey played his prime in the king dome with Edgar Martinez and ARod. Edmonds was definitely better defensively over a longer period of time.

    I think sometimes an entire (or most of a) generation misses seeing excellence in the game, when other obvious things are holding their attention. That's the only reason I can justify in my own head why Jimmy E. is not in the HOF. The only other lefty that I felt a lot of times was ever-so-slightly late on a pitch on PURPOSE, because they knew the ball jumped off their bat to the opposite field, was Darryl Strawberry... baseball afficianados will know what I mean by that. He was a pleasure to watch. Hope he gets in via the Veteran's or some other committee. Nice trip down memory lane.

    After reading about HOF voting process and who the voters are; it's as much qualitative as it is quantitative. Doesn't mean they don't get the majority of them right, but they make some big errors, too, both in who they put in and who they leave out.
