Meanwhile Bret goes out and has a great match with IC champ Rocky Maivia, allowing Rocky to show his wrestling skills and no-quit attitude. Bret beats him down and gets DQ'd at the end, and further buries his own character as a loser and a heal. Bret did more in his last 2 years to help elevate the future stars for the WWE than anyone, Austin, the Rock, and he even did the honors for Shawn with the Iron Man match. It really sounds like Shawn just continuously dropped the ball every time he had his shot, and looked to blame everyone else and be an A-hole politician behind the scenes to Vince. Bret gets labelled as a guy who turned his back on the business and wouldn't drop the belt on his way out, but I can see why he would take that stance with Shawn. The fact is he was very true to the business and had no problem helping push guys that had that same respect for the business, just like Curt Hennig did for him. In that match Bret v Rocky, Rocky does a Perfect-Plex, maybe was to honor Curt? I know the Rock would often use the russian leg sweep and the sharp shooter in his matches, I'm pretty sure he was paying his respect to Bret for helping him out.

Rock first used the Sharpshooter when the Montreal Screwjob was recreated in the 98 Survivor Series. @@user2176 Bret's moves always looked better than everyone else's. His Russian leg sweep and suplex were perfect. Most guys put in a lot of work on the entertainment side, but you could tell Bret really practiced the craft of wrestling. It looked real when he did it, and he never used moves that were obviously fake. The choke slam, for example, looks awesome, but 95% of the time, you can see the victim jumping up on cue and then tucking in his legs to make it easier for the Undertake to hold him up longer. Even Bret's second-rope elbow drop looked legit. Jumping off the top rope looks awesome, but it's so impractical. It takes too long to get up there and the risk of injury would be too high if you missed or got caught by your opponent. An elbow drop from the second rope makes much more sense from a "real" wrestling standpoint. I always really appreciated that stuff. Hennig is the only other guy who made it look so real.

@@mohammedriadh4990 That's actually an internet rumor. Bob Holly only stiffed Dupree, Puder and Cappoteli. Cappoteli because during tough enough while taking bumps in training he was prancing around and laughing and giggling so Hardcore Holly showed him that wrestling isn't a joke. Dupree was because of him getting drunk in his rental car and pissing him off. Puder was because he tried to shoot on Kurt Angle and as a punishment, Eddie Guerrero, Chris Benoit and Bob Holly stiffed him at the Royal Rumble. In fact lots of guys that worked with Bob said he wasn't a bully and he was just a tough guy. He pushed lots of young talent to get better and guys like CM Punk and John Morrison thanked him later on. Also, Holly didn't stiff Lesnar. Lesnar was sick with the flu and was groggy at times during the match, he didn't have proper grip on Bob and as a result dropped him on his neck. Lesnar later apologized to Holly and Holly accepted and a year later worked a main event program with Lesnar around November 2003 to January 2004 that saw Bob Holly become a crowd fave for a little while and helped Lesnar beat another legit tough guy, so it was a win win. They're cool with eachother Everything about Bob is just internet rumors and bullshit. Knowing Benoit and what he did he could've been a bully tho.

The story is Shawn was furious that The Rock did a top rope dropkick (I actually think Bret is mistaken and is referring to the the top rope crossbody, since neither Rocky nor Shawn ever used a top rope dropkick) in a match and he chewed him out in the locker room saying it's HIS move and he never wants to see him use it again. Then, he stormed out and slammed the door. The Rock was apologetic, but Bret told him Shawn was full of shit and nobody can claim the rights to a move that's as common as that and even Owen uses it. Bret said both Shawn and Triple H were jealous of The Rock, saw him as a real threat, and tried to wear him down little by little until he lost all his confidence. I'm sure they were just a little triggered when The Rock ended up stepping over Paul and took the main event spot within a year while Shawn was crippled at home watching RAW high on somas.

@@bighuc What a fu**ing mark you are. Clearly Rock IS a bigger star. He's a worldwide megastar. He has more money. He is more likeable. Etc. But the basis of your argument is hilarious. The fast title changes that began in the late 90s are part of what RUINED wrestling. A lot of people could recite to you the entire WWF/E championship lineage until you get to about 1998 and then it all went crazy with a change every other week. In wrestling terms, Hogan's 6 title runs, Randy Savage's 2, Backlund's single 5 year run with the belt AND Shawn's 1996-97 2 (at that time) run mean WAY more than the 142 bazillion titles that the attitude era wrestlers had. No matter who statistically beats it, nobody will ever surpass Ric Flair's runs as champion either.

He wasn't any martial artist, bouncer or soldier, but he could handle himself against a guy off the street, or a punk in the football locker room, which is actually one of his more embarrassing moments as he chased a guy across a football field threatening to kill him. And The Rock actually did know how to legitimately wrestle. Again, not like he was some Pan Am Games champion or anything, but he was as much go as he was show.

So it's more than safe to say that in the end, Rock did indeed get the last laugh
