Jerry Lewis on Engelbert Humperdinck (1970)

Ойын-сауық

Lewis duets Gypsy's "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and appears in a series of skits with the title star, and then he REALLY pulls one over on the network censors by doing an R-rated reinterpretation of "Blues in Hoss Flat" (11:15). Clip provided by sean32. Copyright 1970 ITC.

At "85" Engelbert just booked another show in Philadelphia May 2022. Engelbert had his own TV Series for 6 months 69-70 shown in the U.K. through ATV and ABC in the U.S. He had all the top entertainers on.

Engelbert is one big mass of ambiguity. Born Arnold George Dorsey in India, raised in Britain, sounds American, took on the inscrutable stage name... I didn't know much about him until this show fell into my lap, and I'm still not sure what to make of him.

@@VinnieRattolle Engelbert’s father was a member of the British Army and stationed in Madras, India when Engelbert was born. Not sure how long his family stayed there, but he was still a boy when they moved back to England. In the late 1950’s he got his first recording contract with Decca Records with the stage name of Gerry Dorsey (keeping his real last name). In 1966, under the advisement of his friend/manager Gordon Mills (who was also managing Tom Jones), he changed his name to Engelbert Humperdinck, who was a 19th century German composer whose most famous work was “Hansel & Gretel”. The name was just odd enough for people to remember it, and in 1967 his version of the country song “Release Me” became a huge hit in both the UK and the US. In fact, it stopped The Beatles “Penny Lane” from reaching the #1 spot in the UK. Both him and Tom Jones still record and tour around the world today (in fact, I just saw Engelbert in Atlantic City NJ last month - he still has more energy at 85 years old than I’ll ever have…😄)

@@robertb4781 I was born in 1977. I grew up with '50s-'60s music, knew his biggest hits, and that he swiped the name, but he was primarily just that guy that I saw every time I flipped through a stack of records in a thrift store (which I've been doing for my whole life -- and there's ALWAYS at least one of his albums!).

@@VinnieRattolle 😆 true…I also would find his albums at flea markets, yard sales, etc., but I actually was about 8 years old (in 1971) when our next-door neighbor gave my parents a bunch of 45s and LP’s that were under the London Records label (he worked in the finance department there in Manhattan). I loved music as a kid and loved playing records - one of records he gave to my parents was “The Last Waltz” and I had no idea who the singer was, but for whatever reason liked his voice and the way he sang…pretty sure I was probably one of his youngest “male” fans ever 😊Since then I’ve met him about half a dozen times, had a few pics taken together, and some signed vinyl (including his first Gerry Dorsey 45 which he couldn’t believe I had). He’s pretty cool with his fans and most of them have seen him literally hundreds of times…
