He must have felt the passage of time so keenly. No matter how many outsiders debate the whys and wherefores of their break-up, I have no doubt they always loved each other and shared a unique time together. When he was very elderly, Lewis obviously harked back to that halcyon period a great deal in his mind. They came together to make the world laugh and amazingly, still do. I'd love to think they are somewhere together again, right now!

In his book "Dean & Me - A Love Story" Jerry Lewis clearly states that the ten years with Dean Martin were the best of his life, and I think it showed. You are totally right, it's amazing how they can still make us laugh. I wish they were here in these difficult times...

In comparing the tributes on the MDA telethon of Sammy Davis Jr in 1990, Martin here in 1996, and Frank Sinatra in 1998, Jerry was most emotional when Sammy died. He was so hurt losing him. I would have thought he would have had the same feeling for Martin, but its wasn't. And in Sinatra, not much emotion, other than just good words. In comparing the three tributes.

  • @givethechanceakid

That was because Sammy's death was only a few months before the telethon, and still a fresh wound to Jerry. Sammy was his best friend. Dean's death was 9 months later and Jerry had more time to process his grief. He still was crying and very upset in this video.

In later years Jerry Lewis had said he'll watch them all, all the Martin and Lewis movies. - the "My Friend Irma" movie he has it memorized ( I have seen it by the way, they are NOT the stars in this movie and it doesn't show them that much) BUT, their last movie, "Hollywood or Bust", he'll NEVER watch it.

You know, to purhaps put it to bed already, dean and jerry did in fact love one another. The split came because they out grew on another. That was it, Something so simple as that,.....buts that what occurred. Yes, they remained life long friends, never admitting, but none the less always friends. Ask Gina..,..

This was a tribute to Dean and Jerry not to Dean. Dean had a long and unbelievably successful career after the break up. Jerry blew it when Frank Sinatra reunited them at the telethon. Jerry, who hadn't made a movie since about '66, who's career was more or less over for a decade asks Dean if he's "working"? Meanwhile Dean had a long-running gigantically successful series on NBC, had hit records, movies and sold-out live performances and was in The Rat Pack with another series of hit movies and historic Vegas appearances. It was a stupid thing to say and you can see Dean had that old "fuckin Jerry" feeling. That's why Dean never followed up on the reunion.

Dude you don't know about Jerry Lewis' career clearly. And seem to have a bias against Jerry. The last completed film he made prior to the reunion was in 1970. The Day the Clown Cried could have been a masterpiece ahead of its time if he had been able to release it. But producer Nathan Waschberger took off with the money, and they also didn't ever fully secure the rights to make it in the first place, so that's why it was never released. This soured Jerry Lewis from making films during the 70's, and he thought many films were just not his style during that time, so he chose not to make anything until 1979. He received many film offers during the 70's but did not take them, because of the quality of films being made at the time. You say he was out of work, but he was about to go on tour with Hellzapoppin, which would have made it to Broadway had Jerry and the director not clashed. Jerry did do Broadway again 20 yrs later. He also continually had sold out live shows throughout the 70's and beyond. Also your claim that Dean never followed up on the reunion is utter BS. They did have private phone calls between each other until Dean's death. They also publicly reunited at the Aladdin hotel with Frank and Dean on stage in 1977, Dean Paul's funeral in 1987 where Jerry went and then Dean and he talked on the phone afterwards consistently, for Dean's birthday in 1989, and Sammy Davis Jr's funeral in 1990. Dean and Jerry also almost made a film together called Paradise Road with Frank Sinatra and Peter Bogdanovich directing in the early 80's. The producers screwed it up, and it never was filmed, but Dean and Jerry were both on board to do the movie together and with Frank Sinatra and Jimmy Stewart as other members of the cast. The "You working?' thing is clearly a joke, I think they say it again in other reunion they did in 1989. Stop making it serious. Take a look at my 2hr video on the many public and private Martin and Lewis reunions.

“You working...?” was actually on a pun on the relationship. When they broke up Jerry was on top, people thought Dean would be just a singer after, Jerry had hit after hit and Deans first film without him was a bust. But the tables turned and Dean became a HUGE personality. It was a joke. Don’t take it so hard....

BEFORE the reunion of the Telethon they left messages of good wishes to each other on the mirrors of the dressing rooms where they were to perform. Written with a lipstick. They both KNEW when and where the other was to perform. Enough of this stupid hatred of Jerry Lewis!

@Mike Cascio Dean Martin abandoned his first wife with her first four children when they were still children. He managed to declare bankruptcy so as NOT to pay her alimony. When he separated from Jerry Lewis, he charged his first wife with all the taxes he had NOT paid, drove her to alcoholism and then took her children and entrusted them to the second wife. He ALWAYS cheated on both wives. Dean Martin has Jerry Lewis to thank for falling in love with him as soon as he met him. It was Jerry who proposed it for their first show together. Jerry taught him to dance (although he never took dance lessons but was a natural talent for dance), it was Jerry Lewis who collaborates with the writers to write their skits and dealt with sponsors and took care of all financial aspects of the couple while Dean Martin played Golf. After the split, Jerry Lewis became a WORLD FAMOUS idol by moving forward on his own. If Dean Martin hadn't cunningly hooked up with Fran Sinatra by putting himself under her protective cloak, he would have disappeared within a few years. In the 70s his Dean Martin Show was because it had become too CRUDE a show! Dean Martin was a class act as long as he was with Jerry Lewis. They were a class act TOGETHER. And I'm not writing ALL the cruel things he said to Jerry after the breakup. The most sadly "famous" one: "you can talk as much as you want but to me you're just a fucking dollar sign of love". And Jerry has ALWAYS forgiven him, he never said anything bad to Dean on the contrary, he always took the blame for the separation, when instead it was a combination of various factors that made them explode, especially due to critics and journalists who do not they never cared about Dean. You always stop to read the usual stuff from the sleazy gossip magazines and always write the same things.
