Every time I see Jerry in an interview or read about him, I'm more in awe. He was a born entertainer and humanitarian. In spite of all his illnesses that he had.

I have a great story about ALAN King, this is about 20 years ago. I was staying at the Hilton in AC & he must have been appearing there . I get off the elevator & who is Getting off the elevator next to me? ALAN King. I looked at him & said “Alan , Mr. King! How are you, where you heading?” He sAid “ I’m going to the casino kid, “ put his alarm around me & said “ Let’s go lose our money together” we played CRAPS together for a few hours, he then took me to the Italian Restaurant upstairs , bought me dinner & we developed a friendship. I told him I worked in Great Neck where he had his Mansion & he Gave me his # & said whenever I went to lunch & wanted him to join me to call him & he would join me if he was in town. I had lunch with him quite a few times at Bruce’s in Great Neck & he couldn’t have been nicer. What a wonderful man he was!!

may i ask what you talked about at lunch, that is, what were his interests? He always seemed a very down to earth person, with a very spiritual side to him also.

i hope Dean saw this in 1992 and saw Jerry's compliments about Dean's ability to not only be a great "straight man" but also his ability to switch in an instant to being the COMIC to Jerry as straight man.

And an ego the size of Mt. Rushmore. But yeah. As far as intelligent goes, he pretty much had it all figured out by age 14, and was honing his craft on stage, looking for and planning for his big break. He knew exactly how to break in, and executed his plan. I'm not too sure about his version of the breakup. I think Dean had made his nut and he was content with the gigs he could get on his own hook after that. There were serious acting gigs he could get that Jerry could never get. Jerry could command a room by acting like a bratty 9-year-old. Dean could command a room with his charisma.

It makes me happy to know that these two really loved and admired each other. Unfortunately, at a time when both needed some space and time to move on separately, some harsh words were exchanged that created some really hurt feelings for both men. I’m glad they were able to make up before they passed away. 😢

Thé scène where he is face to face with the man in the elevator was genius. The micro expressions on his face were priceless. I loved to watch Martin and Lewis on Classic movie re runs when I was a kid! Sometimes Jerry was even too silly for me! Most of the time I loved the magical chemistry that they both had.

not plausible to compare laurel and hardy to martin and lewis with regard to what films are shown on tv....this has to do with copyright issues. L&H have no copyright and can be shown without residuals....so stations can air without paying.....

In my opinion, i think the partnership meant much more to Jerry than to Dean. Dean always said “we were just 2 guys fu***ing around”. I think Dean liked Jerry but it wasn’t this DEEP emotional thing with Dean. Dean wasn’t raised to be weak and emotional. He was raised to “Be a man”, “men don’t cry” etc. Dean rarely talked bout the partnership after the split. Jerry talked bout it til the day he died.

  • @Donazify

Dean still loved Jerry, because he said so both in words in public and in an engraved watch he gave to Jerry. Dean didn't have the same type of deep emotions for anyone I think. As Jeanne Martin said "There is something unreachable about him."

Laural and Hardy were a bit different. Hardy many times did the funny stuff. He was not just a straight man. And Hardys facial expressions were the best ever. But for the time period Dean and Jerry also had there own thing . And it was time to move on. Both had great careers. Don't understand the years of animosity.

Well they were bigger than those groups in the sense that they had a fandom, and were the rock stars of their time. 20,000 people didn't show up in time square for Laurel and Hardy or Abbott and Costello. Half of that was because those two groups had no sex appeal, and did not appeal to women or teenage girls in that way. If you only heard that they had a great nightclub act, maybe you should check it out on KZread? They had a hilarious nightclub act, and shows on the Colgate Comedy Hour.
