Jeff Buckley - KCRW Solo Acoustic Set

Музыка

'Man in the Moon' session (4th January 1994).
In the early 90's, Jeff Buckley stopped by KCRW's studios late one night - well before he was famous - settling down in front of a microphone in Master Control right across from Liza Richardson. He sang a handful of songs, including a Bad Brains cover, an original track and a cover of Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit."

This man eludes me. So soft spoken, yet full of energy, spontaneity and humor. As soon as he starts playing he settles into the mood of the song he's playing instantly, regardless of whatever he was saying or doing before. It's like every part of his being is dedicated to channeling that energy.

I distinctly remember driving home somewhere between 94 and 95 and hearing Last Goodbye on the radio for the first time. Before Cell phones and KZread were around, I raced home as fast as I could so that I could tell my brothers to turn on the radio and hear this fantastic song. There were only a few times in my life that a song moved me in the way that Last Goodbye did at that moment. The whole album turned out to be like that for me. What a talent. I am very grateful he created for as long as he did, I only wish it were longer.

Grace sounds like he's playing it on a 12-string guitar, sounds gorgeous. Also the lowest chord in the verse/chorus progression, it has this extra note in it which I didn't realise was there, and might not be there in the other versions, but it's so beautiful.

This is our last goodbye I hate to feel the love between us die But it's over Just hear this and then I'll go You gave me more to live for More than you'll ever know This is our last embrace Must I dream and always see your face? Why can't we overcome this wall? Baby, maybe its just because you didn't know you at all Kiss me, please kiss me But kiss me out of desire, babe, not consolation Oh, you know it makes me so angry 'Cause I know that in time, I'll only make you cry This is our last goodbye Did you say, "No, this can't happen to me" Did you rush to the phone to call Was there a voice unkind in the back of your mind Saying maybe you didn't know him at all You didn't know him at all, oh oh, ya didn't know Ooo didn't know Well, the bells out in the church tower chime Burning clues into this heart of mine Thinking so hard on her soft eyes And the memories, offer signs that it's over Over

Laura yeah, I learned of his music recently. Then learned of his death shortly after and was crushed. The more I learn about him, I realize just how complex and sensitive he was. He loved performing but the business side really brought him down. I wish his manager was there to stop him from going in the water that night, but in Jeff's mind he just wanted that freedom to splash around and do what he wanted. A tug boat passed by and apparently created an enormous pull and undertow that carried him blocks down river. Just a terrible accident. But yes hard to accept such a gift being taken.
