    My favourite track of all time. Makes me cry out of sadness or pure happiness. Really depends on what’s happening to me and my life the moment I listen to it. This version is haunting and beautiful and makes me miss aspects of my life that are gone but also hopeful for what’s to come. Everything has to leave us but parts of them stay with us forever.

    This is supposedly the only known live performance of the song :) it is certainly the only time he performed it on the Hard Luck Tour which was one date in New Zealand and 14 in Australia. This was the final show of the tour when they returned to Sydney after starting there (after Auckland) and also the final concert with full band ever. I wouldn't be surprised if he played it occasionally in one off gigs and secret shows later in '96 or at Barrister's in Memphis in '97 or whatever which may not have all been recorded.

    John Arundell there is actually one recording of him playing "lover.." and then singing some of the "flowers in time" lyrics still playing lover you should have come over chords and sounds. Kinda like he sometimes plays hallelujah and then sings some lyrics from i know its over i think thats the song.

    at this concert, he mentioned before it that he had been working on some new material while in Australia (his first gig was at Enmore in Sydney, at the end of that concert his manager came out and announced that Jeff would come back at the end of the tour to play in Sydney again, this was that extra concert at the end of the tour). The band had left the stage and Jeff was by himself. So this was still a 'work in progress', a song he had just written. This would definitely be the first live performance, if not the only complete one. It was magical in person, a real intimate atmosphere, like listening to a friend playing you a new song.

    *this* was the version i heard first before the studio version. and while i think the studio version is beautiful, this version will always reign supreme for me. i adore liz fraser, but i think she oversings in parts...meaning, for such a beautiful, delicate song, her delivery is a bit harsh in places. which is strange, because so much of her singing on the cocteau twins' songs is the epitome of beautiful and delicate. jeff's singing on this version is exactly what the song needs...i only wish we had a studio version with just him singing it.

  • @ycoz5814

    @ycoz5814

    I disagree. It's that power in her voice that gives the song a rawness. I don't it's that Liz didn't like the recorded version but that perhaps it was too personal.

    Some reason it did not grow into a collab is they broke up :/ I wouldn't record a song with my ex either, especially if we wrote and recorded it together already in demo form when we were lovers; it was never gonna happen .. her supposedly not liking that recording is ancient history and overstated anyway she loves it now as she should. It was always meant to be a duet, and she sang it beautifully with Jeff.

  • @KristaWaple

    @KristaWaple

    This used to be my favorite version, but lately I've found myself listening to the recording with Liz just as obsessively as I usually do this one. In fact, while writing this right now I also have a tab open with the duet so I can go between the two. But I can definitely say that what melts me while listening to their recording together is when Jeff comes in with the solo version of the chorus after Liz's first verse. Which I guess is to say that his voice is what brings this song to another level -- it would be a lovely song even if it were just Liz, but it wouldn't do to me what it does if Jeff's singing were missing. It's also beautiful knowing that they wrote this song together, after they'd fallen in love with one another's voice and then each other.

    The brash contrast is part of the beauty of the song, and her style. Life doesn't compose itself, you get the raw and the gentle experiences often at the same time. Hence, Liz's biting, contrasting cries break through the beautiful melody to remind us that the journey, even the journey of our best musical composers, contains instruments beyond our control. We get something maybe mildly painful to our ears layered amid the bliss. Such is life. :)
