I saw Jeff Buckley at a small hippie bar in NYC called Wetlands. His band is opening for the first tour of the “Counting Crows” in 92 or 1993? The crowd was stacked on top of each other like it was a Black Friday for the Counting Crows! 99% of us was their for Counting Crows, Buckley was playing small pubs in NYC, CC? They owned college radio, they were gonna become T.V. Famous. Not a show to open for! Buckley had opening spot, crowd gave little notice, it wasn’t who we came for. He starts to hummm, Do some octave ranges with his voice. The octaves are from gospel to rock and he starts with his guitar! Short story, he crushed the Counting Crows! I never saw an opening act, destroy any band like that and than have them forget singing their songs, Buckley, no album out took every Counting Crows fan home with his band that night. Top 10 of my music nights in NYC

The moments he looks straight into the camera, you just feel as though you have known him for so long and many lives before. Only a small number of people have that. I cry wishing he was still here so that we could and he could witness his growth as time went on. Listening to him brings me closer to the spiritual essence that I find out in the woods, in the sound of rain falling on pine needles, on the cold blistering days when the sun's rays shine through the clouds like they were looking for the places to peek through.

Hmmm the Tim Buckley question really caught my attention. I loved the entire interview...but over time I've come to empathise with Jeff's sensitivity to that. Before I'd almost shrug it off. But in retrospect I think the absence and ultimate loss of his father had such an impact on his life...that to constantly be reminded and dissected by people who were just asking as part of their "job" must have hurt. They didn't really care about his feelings. When they asked that question in particular, it's like he was just a product in front of them and not a human being. I won't lie, I've gone back and watched Tim's performances and mannerisms, to compare to Jeff. I'm fascinated by the sheer miracle of genetics. But I also get why none of that matters. Jeff is his own man and the person who caused him so much grief shouldn't get put into that picture, when Jeff is the one who overcame being abandoned to make his own sound and fame.

His brilliance is in his honesty..hes got integrity and searching always for the truth. this is what all great artists do.The rest are second hand hacks. This is why he creates something new. Wish he didn't make that one mistake in a river, left us too soon.

That last line, and last subject they touched on: my god, would I love to hear an entire interview on that one topic! I think he’s spot on (or 99% so), but I wouldn’t leave it at just “all rap” and/or “all hip hop”, rather, I think that’s just “all music” is mostly bad/crap, but some of it is absolutely brilliant, life affirmingly so. What is crap or brilliant is of course subjective, to a massive degree, but I do think there’s some degree of objective analysis one can apply, to at least be able to get down to what’s “accomplished” and what isn’t, though that’s getting into other territory, and it’s too broad a discussion/topic for the comments. The only thing I don’t agree with is, “folk music is boring”, though it certainly can be. He almost sort of contradicts himself immediately, by going on to point out multiple artists/genres that aren’t traditional folk, but that he sees as folk, or, “of the people”, but would he also call punk and hip hop boring? I think the issue is delineating between traditional folk music and a broader application of “folk” as a genre, style, or even aesthetic. Where I think the confusion lies is in separating these, and maybe calling one “populist” as opposed to “folk”, but again, this is moving into territory that’s really lengthy for the comments section. My main point is that I’d love to hear them/him expand on these matters, and really get into the weeds a bit! ✌️
