Usually the smaller men are better because they have learnt early to tackle without getting hurt. I agree there is a feel to it as much about the selection of the type of tackle for each moment. But although he will never be great it must be possibly to improve. It's. Moot point because he is at the end now. I would be surprised if he is on the Irish panel by the end of the season, depending on injury.

Guys O'Gara has written his name in glory and has created a legacy with Ireland and Munster which can never be touched or disputed...yet ask me in 25/30 years what were his skills and strengths and i will tell you that the man is brilliant at controlling a game, beautiful passer of the ball and a tremdeous goal kicker...his weakness has been, is and forever will be his tackling...in my opinion the reason why he has never been a first choice Lions No. 10

@hmmm098 I'm not the biggest fan of O'Gara but to his credit the man led Munster to two HC's and Ireland to a Grandslam and has been selected for a Lions tour 3 times. He's the highest point scorer in the history of the Heineken Cup and the Six Nations and to say Hodgson is in the same League is quite frankly laughable.

@TopRugbyLad sry mate forgot that one thanks for reminding me. Oh and i just want to say because of all the big tackles he put in and putting his body on the line he really messed him self up. While he was incredible brave in defense it cost him a lot in terms of injury. Out halfs arent really meant for big defense unless they are Carter or wilko ;)

@1234howrya yeah but all he needed to do was jump to look like he was competing for the ball and he wouldn't have been penalised for taking the man out. and i suppose, but you can't blame it all on the bull, the front 5 was changed a lot, they had andy sheridan instead of gethin jenkins, matt rees on for lee mears and simon shaw behind him instead of alun wyn jones so too many variables have been changed to make a judgement on how they fared in the scrum compared with the first test

@@strawberrykicker2 Well it’s because of The Lions if I’m honest with you. He was talented but at that level they all are. He wasn’t good enough to be a test playing lion and in the end it showed. However he is doing very well as a coach and I think will have an equally successful coaching career as his playing career.

@@strawberrykicker2 There was a good few factors, we threw away a lead for sure. But he made a really poor decision which ultimately handed them the victory. I made no suggestion he was the only culprit. But he was the deciding factor at the end. What’s your opinion on his mistake that he made? Because it was a mistake.

You would think the coaches and himself would go off and do a little work on technique to make sure he docent get killed tackling. You can't fault his courage because he keeps trying to make tackles his only flat is the way he is trying to make them. Actually if he gets in contact with me it will take me a couple of hours and it won't happen again.

Its not that he's not willing but like you say his technique is awful, just a complete spacker....... there are many little men who were great tacklers, like George Gregan..... its about attitude and technique. They say tackling can be learnt and is about attitude...... O'Gara proves this is not always true...... I honestly believe he has no natural feel for it whatsoever.
