    Dear sir. I was milling with lead and realised that my powder certainly had lead in it because i mill my stuff individually and the lead balls turned my white potasium nitrate black. Thats a sure indication of lead and since i started using tin media my powder is much cleaner. I also mill for at least 36 hours because lets face it we are not in a hurry and make sure you stir it loose from the bottom every now and then. Thanks

    Hey there Sir, I have a feeling that it is much better to make any black powder at all than none. I know You like to chase perfection, but to be honest, for me, it matters that it works at all, happy every shot :)

    Thank you for your comment. Agreed, I'm not trying to be anal about this, of the two woods and milled the same which is better?? I already know the willow gun powder I have made does not burn as clean as the Juniper, and the willow was also milled twice. I just did not state that in this video.

    Interesting. It’s probably because I’m using soft lead. I measured a few musket balls that cast at .735 and they measured .705. It seems like you really can’t mill too long.

    Could always try weighing them. See if you're losing lead or if it's just getting "compacted".

    "I test" Stages and batches inside SS 2" pipe caps with a fixed amount of DIY BP, then I let it sit to observe how my fouling reacts with humidity or time. I have had "THE SAME" thoughts as "I do" the same re process with my DIY BP fines. of late I think my moisture or humidity control matters "most?" before and after milling, I gave up pucking for now, but I just made a twin roller machine for sizing my Pucked, Corned BP? I tested the lead theory as I was down this rabbit hole with discarded jacketed bullets for media while disappointed with my speed and fouling. The vessel I used in the milling "maybe" VERY important? none had me satisfied. I found my fouling and speed much NOT Great with lead and/or cast off projo media, maybe a Lead Oxide? or sulfide? or the rubber/plastic China media vessel? I "now use" Glass jars and Alumina Ceramic media at the suggestion of a friend whom is Both Chemical And Mechanical Engineer, a SMART Guy who runs and has a Laboratory for Testing others' bulk materials (coke and coal). Now "I am" looking into the Sulfur. Sulfur has a Low melting point(240f) but acts like putty or plastic at ambient temps. I'm thinking of taking my milled product up to this temp, but lower than BAD temps to see if this level of sulfur bond makes the Magic happen with the Holy Trinity. I have Not figured it out yet. One batch is FAST and CLEAN! the next with same materials is Almost as good? the only thing different is the date, weather, or time, I even started a batch book with batch numbers and notes to track my progress as my memory sucks and all BP is black. I did notice when I very "carefully" use heat to dry my pucked or not DYI BP I got Faster, and Cleaner? Keep Chasing the Dragon! now with the world in our hands and computers in our pockets, we struggle to Re Learn what our Fathers' Father's ALL knew. GOD Bless!

    Thank you for sharing you knowledge. Two things, I should have stated my lead balls are a 60/40 lead very hard, maybe that's why they have not deformed and such. All MY drying up to now was with the summer sun. This time I will be drying with a de- hydrator. I now only use water to moisten the powder before pucking, so that should not be a problem. I plan on lining the pans with foil. I have seen others use a dehydrator to dry their pucks. Have a Great day

    I just re-milled a batch this weekend. It was some that I had already screened and didn’t really like the speed. I milled it another day and pucked it. After breaking it up, I touched off a little of the 4f before it was fully dry and it was vastly faster than previously. It was also way cleaner.

    I just came across this channel and I am wondering how the Juniper charcoal turned out is it as fast as Eastern Red Cedar. I know there is some difference in the wood of Juniper and Red Cedar so there should be some difference in the powder it will make. I am going to try some unusual sources for charcoal and compare them with others.

    Another good video and thanks for sharing your experience. There are people who have the technology to check particle size...it might be wise to use them to determine where the particle size is as small as it will get. Also if you have the opportunity try mimosa charcoal for your powder. Take care and God speed!!!

    Thank You for your comment. At the moment I don't think Lead dust is what is causing all that bad fouling, I tend to think it's the graphite coating on commercial powder. What temp does graphite burn and disappear.

  • @Miningpastpresentfuture

    @Miningpastpresentfuture

    Graphite does not burn until you get up around 2500 degrees Centigrade! It definitely shows up in the fouling, so does any ash in the wood.

    Interesting. I make Black Powder, when i need it for BP guns. I never messed with all the things people do with or to Black powder. You guys go way overboard about your milling and process. For me, i find that milling the powder damp, not wet, mixes it the best. For me. The extra worry about what charcoal, ect and all the rest is a waste of time. A couple hundred feet per second is not going to make a big difference in the long run. My point is just making consistent BP is all that matters. Or having a consistent replacement. But I understand people wanting to play with improving Black Powder. Have fun!

    @@mkultraification , I digress. If it matters in Cartridge loadings it matters all times. Is the inside of a bp chamber not the equivalent of a simple cartridge? Then it matters all the time. Cartridge is less forgiving. But in regular cap and ball it still matters.

    I use about 50 stainless steel 3/4" ball bearings as tumbler media, and I add just enough water in the ball mill to keep the dust down. Then I let it tumble overnight. Seems to burn clean-ish, but that's just my opinion.

    I've got the same problem with factory balls. A lot come out of the tumbler with what I call devil's horns. I'm not 100% sure, but my theory is that it's trapped air pockets in the ball. Maybe the factory swaging process tends to trap more air🤷‍♂️... I have also tumbled home cast balls from #6 shot to 0.732" from pure lead to a BHN of about 18-ish and never had any problem with deformation of the ball from the tumbling process. I can't say for sure, but it really seems like home cast is better than factory swaged for that reason...
