Good to see you Mike. Sitting here in the ER waiting for a life saving blood transfusion due to dangerous low levels of blood. They even asked if I was a JW. I told them I recovered from that cult.

If a person is properly recovered from any cult it means that no matter what happens their pan has sufficient charge in it at their last breath to get them in the presence of the Lord!

THIS IS a GREAT IDEA!! simple, cheap, customizable, incremental, and reversable! I could see this helping my stoner's reliability 10 to 15% while reducing my brother's laughter equally?

Very insightful! I like this idea a lot, I always assumed the powder moving around was just something to deal with when MZ hunting. This is something I'll try on a replacement frizzen I have for one of my rifles one day!

Darn good idea! Also major points for saying it works for you instead of 'this is the BEST way' or 'this is THE fix' or some such nonsense. All guns are different and you point this out. 👍👍

Great idea! Haven't shot my flinter for some years now. I recall doing a lot of tinkering with the flint/clamp etc. for good ignition. Never hunted with it. I can see where your method has good merit for field use. Thank you...........

I have 3 TVM muzzleloaders, a .36, .50 rifles and .62 Fowler. All with Chambers locks--2 Deluxe Siler and 1 Colonial Virginia. The locks are designed with a pan to hold an ideal charge. I fill them, or very nearly so. In the field I only worry about making sure the pan powder is fresh. It's going to get into the flash hole in normal carrying. I don't sweat it. Sharp flint, hard frizzen, clear touch hole(free of fouling), dry pan powder and gun goes bang just like it's supposed too. Where you live I would probably prime normally with 4f as well. On the Eastern side I use 3 and sometimes 2f to prime. Dry trumps granual size every time. If I ever wear out a frizzen I'll send my over to Chambers for a new, fitted one. You did a nice job on your rifle.

I use 4-F and it works very, very fast. Just a little sprinkle does the trick.

@@yepiratesworkshop7997 when the moisture in the air is low 4f is indeed fastest. For hunting I still want the pan flash to last longer.

Good points. Let me add that they make a pick for the touch hole. Once loaded, I'll probe the touch hole with my pick or a needle.....it makes a difference. .58 cal 44" swamped Colerain smoothbore, L&R Queene Anne lock, Brown Bess hardware, French Fusil style, aka "Bastard Fusil".

Picking the touch-hole and not adding much 4-F (primer) powder in the pan has cut my lock time down to cap-lock speed to fire.

I've only picked a vent twice at a match. Once on my .36 that I built which was my first rifle and has many issues, and once on my .50 I built from scratch. Not sure what caused the .50 to need picking, might need to polish the breech plug face. A properly set up touch hole placement and polished breech face will blast the touch hole and breech face clean of fouling when the charge is set off. I can run 30 or so shots through my .50 without cleaning the bore or picking the vent. The biggest key is learning where fouling is coming from and eliminating it. Common causes are a rough breech face, flash hole too far forward of the breech face, and too little or too much of a powder charge causing incomplete combustion. Just some self learnt tips that I've acquired the hard way

Thanks for this, I picked up a Pedersoli Kentucky .32 that has ignition issues, and I've tried three different types of powder, 3F and 4F in the pan, and I'm getting a slight hangfire most times. The flint is sharp and well placed and this is really the only one of my flintlocks that doesn't want to shoot well, I've got four others, from Indian made guns, another Pedersoli and even my two Traditions flintlocks are quicker than this gun. I've tried different powder levels to try and get the ignition better, but I'm still getting a slight delay with it. I've used almost no powder and varying levels up to having the pan full.

Sounds like youre fusing. The touch hole should be right at the flat of the top of the pan (imagine drawing an invisible line across the top if the pan. This is where your touch hole should rest). If yours is lower thab the top surface of the pan, try tipping the gun to the lock side (with the lock angled down) and giving the gun a tap to the side, to move the powder away from the barrel. Also try poking the propelling charge with your vent pick through the touch hole before you close the frizzen and fire. Also try changing your vent hole liner.

Greetings from the east coast. I noticed that your flintlock appears to be built for a left handed person, or . . . you are filming in a fashion that produces a mirror image. I have watched a few videos that are mirror images of what's going on. Can you clear that up. Just curious. And your musket is really nice. I have a NW trade musket I am working. Good information.
