I’m all for rehabilitation for everyone but when you murder/assault people over and over it’s pretty obvious they aren’t going to change. It’s an internal craving that has to be indulged in at some point. Serial killers have so many signs as they grow up but so many are ignored and mental illness isn’t taken seriously. When you see the life leave someone’s eyes or the screams/cries from another human from your actions and can go get lunch and sleep like a baby you need to go away forever. Society isn’t safe with people like that out there.

@@animaIpath murder is never justified, killing someone can be justified. But to murder someone is to do kill them in cold blood, unless they had diminished capacity, it’s still all on them. And considering the fact that murder demonstrates malice and premeditation, there’s no chance that someone that would murder someone would have diminished capacity because they would be lucid and cognitive enough to plan ahead. You can kill someone in self-defense and be totally justified, but that’s not murdering someone. Murdering is the premeditated killing of someone in cold blood with Mal intent. So murder is never justified

I still remember Unterweger very well, who lived near me in Vienna at the time. You could see him on TV talk shows all the time. He always wore a white suit and loved hearing himself talk. Austrian celebrities flattered and praised him. He was presented as a successful rehabilitation and as a role model. Hipe around Unterweger got on my nerves and I found him extremely unsympathetic and manipulative. He was a cowardly narcissist and psychopath to his cowardly end.

He used a poem by Heinrich Heine and said it was his own work. Much of his "writing" in prison was either plagiarized or as his successful novel it was very likely written by a ghostwriter. They didn't have the internet back then so it was more difficult to research (plus nobody even thought of it). He did this to impress influential people/intellectuals of that time and convinced everyone of his reformation. I just listened to a 8 hour podcast series that goes into much detail about his early life and childhood memories. They spoke to people who knew him as a child. His autobiography about his cruel grandpa who raised him is at least very exaggerated. The prison director who worked hard to get him out of prison died half a year after that, so he never saw the consequences of his work when Unterweger was convicted for the second time... they also spoke to his writing tutor from his time in prison who read some of his "early works" and he said it was garbage, it's impossible he could have written anything decent or interesting by himself.

Gurt is an actual legend for using that golden opportunity to have this monster removed from the streets, Jack was a true monster, he isolated people, scammed people, was full of himself and needed attention and for some bizarre reason became a celebrity, manipulated the public through the media by claiming he was “persecuted”, killed so may women and to top it off, posed their bodies in a lewd manner. I really can’t believe he became a celebrity, like I just can’t understand that at all! And then be used his fame to get information from the Police so he could be one step ahead so he could continue murdering. And naturally he was an utter COWARD who killed himself instead of facing the consequences of his actions,

There were some cool insights from interviews with his forensic psychiatrist from the second trial, a celebrety who endorsed his pardon (because of his literary engagements) or a court reporter following the trial. But this here is way better because it doesn't let out any important details. Really appreciate this because the case is the most unbelieveable one from the German-speaking area to me, even with an international dimension. He was nicknamed the 'Prison Poet' by the media and his supporters.

Every time I listen to your podcast, the main thing that resignates with me is the incompetence of the police and the judicial system. So many of these guys were in jail serving long sentences for “gateway” crimes before they became serial killers and then the system lets them go early and BOOM!, the serial killing begins. So many lives lost because of incompetence. Scary world we live in.

I'm binge-watching/listening to your episodes. One theme that seems interesting to me is how the primary "monster" in each episode is rarely the only monster who shows up in these horrific stories. From hospital administrations to prison administrations to whole countries (Romania) of people who seem to have an indifference to their own evil and monstrous choices and actions or inactions. The evil of indifference seems to undergird the active evil perpetrated by the people we love to hold up as the only images of evil.

Living in Canada I can fully agree with this. So many criminals get light sentences and then end up released after only serving two thirds of their original sentence. Then when they get out they commit crimes again. They never learn. They are always angry at everyone who “gets them into trouble”. They never seem to realize that they need to make changes to themselves in order to actually live a crime free life.
