Rape culture impacts men and women in very similar ways. Both are often dismissed by law enforcement. With men being ridiculed, and women being accused of "asking for it". Both are accused of secretly enjoying it because of uncontrollable biological reactions. Editted:The one area where men have it worse in liberal countries are the problematic laws that defined rape as something involving the criminal committing penetration. You can see the problem in defining it that way.

20+ bodies and I've never heard of him. As it turns out, your death is investigated depending on who you were before or during death.

I never heard of this case before, it’s so shocking that it had little to no media coverage… We only hear about the ones like Dahmer, Bundy and Gacy….it’s crazy how there are similar or worse serial killers that we have never heard of !!

South Louisiana has very poor areas where people are making the best of a bad situation, so they are doing anything they can to make ends meet. it's not like growing up in a poor side of Chicago; it's rural poverty, which is different. Also, Katrina happened, so a lot of people weren't focused on crime, they were just trying to get back on their feet...this includes people who work for police departments. also the fact that the victims were multiracial, poor drug users, probably made it difficult for detectives to narrow down a suspect, especially after the capture of derrick todd lee, which everyone just assumed would be a white guy and he wasn't

Meanwhile people got detectives that actually care we got corrupt ones out here in Michigan, like sheriff Swanson everybody thinks that everywhere else he's a hero and he made history, when reality is the protest he stopped have 15 people that you could probably take at once it was never a big movement it shouldn't have made history and he shouldn't have the title of a good detective LOL the minute that guy's busted for something again someone should do a podcast on him. I look forward to the day where this man is actually taken down for human trafficking. But then again we still have poison water in Flint Michigan so probably nobody will ever notice

Prior to social media and advancements in DNA/Criminal databases etc... Unless they found ID or could match victims with a missing person/Criminal record, news media is unfortunately how many people learned of deaths of loved ones at the hands of violent killers.

I lived in St. Tammany Parish for about 7 years, and the justice system in LA in general is absolutely reprehensible. The fact that so many detectives and officers failed to stop him sooner testifies to how incompetent law enforcement tends to be there. Not only do the guilty go free for far too long, but there's a track record of legitimately innocent people being convicted on woefully insufficient evidence. LA needs thorough rehabilitation of its law enforcement, and has for decades.

Louisiana is under French common law (guilty until proven innocent). It's the only state that isn't under English common law (innocent until proven guilty). The system kind of causes lots of innocents to be caught up like that. It also opens the door for lots of corruption.

I lived in Slidell for about 5 years. It was a nice town. However it's not necessarily that Louisiana law enforcement is incompetent, it's that it's extremely corrupt. Just like the political structure of the state. Even when they do get someone somewhere who wants to do their job right and actually work for the people, they either get told they're going to play the game or, if they won't cooperate, they get run out of their position.

After watching so many of these it’s scary and sad how police work is usually what allows these monsters to go unpunished for years. I still remember the Dahmer incident when one of his victims escaped and ran away only for him to be sent back after a stupid excuse by Dahmer.

i appreciate how you never fail to include the horrific neglect from detectives and police that can occur in cases like this. there will be times where people wonder how things like that could ever happen, how the noble force of cops and detectives that are supposed to protect us can let this happen. and the truth is, there has always been groups of people that the system at large couldn't possibly care less about. it's so disheartening, to see that the victims of murder can be deemed unworthy of attention somehow, just because they were a victim of addiction or a sex worker, and even because of simple facts like racism and homophobia. consider how different this would have gone if these victims were not mostly young black men. these things don't make a person any less human, and it's so upsetting to see them being treated as such after their life is stolen away from them like they didn't even matter. this case could've ended so differently had it not been for the one detective...

Such an extremely sad case. It makes me sick to my stomach every time I hear a case where the victims are considered not worthy of justice. So happy he was finally caught!!

Props to the detective who didn't give up, and saw these victims as the PEOPLE they were.

Konerak Sinthasomphone was his name. The two women who tried to help him were teenagers themselves. It’s just sickening how the police don’t give a shit about anyone but themselves.

You’ve accomplished your goal: I’ve never heard this case. Ann Rule did a masterful job of making all the murder victims come alive in her book about Gary Ridgeway and I’ve never looked at “throw-away” victims the same since. May the memory of these men never be forgotten.

This case is a terrifying reminder never to take candy from a stranger... Metaphorically speaking. Don't let someone tie you up is another point in case

Yeah, my friends don't "get it" and think I'm weird, like I must dream about being a serial killer, but I don't. Another good channel is Forensic Files / Medical Detectives as they also have good, level sound editing, and a calming narrator. Few nights ago fell asleep watching something else, woke up in a panic at 4 a.m. because autoplay sent me to a video that used a ringtone sound I set for my boss.

I'm from Louisiana and it's always horrifying yet interesting when I hear you mention my state. All that said, love your podcast!!!

It's French Canadian to be exact and is indeed pronounced "Boot". It means, "Good", but good in the Excellent department. So, awesome, amazing, that sort of thing. Born and raised in Toronto where I went to French school for awhile. French-Canadian, which isn't like France-French, but definitely is related to Louisiana French. French Canadian is also known as Quebecois.

Season 5, yay!!! So HAPPY i found you in season 1, have been addicted since. I actually listen to the episodes 2 times, one on Google Podcast, and then again on YT. Worth it every time. Great work as usual. Agreed it the best channel in true crime!!!... These poor victims. These men shldnt have died, had the cops given 2 shits about them, and done their job, it wld have stopped after the 1st rape victim. Very sad. God be with the families of all these young men.

It's absolutely heartbreaking and infuriating that victims are tossed to the side if they're part of a marginalized people. Minorities seem to get the dark end of the fucked-up stick a lot and their deaths are just looked at like 'oh...its a dark skined person...they probably were doing something bad to end up like this.' I'm not just talking about Africian Americans like myself, but native americans, hispanic, those of asian descent...everyone deserves to have their killer brought to justice and with the case of this ugly mofo, they were just tossed to the side. The media also is doing no one in these groups any favors! Look at Gabby Petito. While everyone was searching for her, they ended up finding five others who had also gone missing, and who knows how many other crimes were put on the back burner and not heard of because stories of her case were the prime focus of the media. For me, its one of those situations where I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired. My stomach literally turned with each murdered person that popped up in this story.

yeah, I have a feeling this guy was picking black victims for this reason rather than a sexual preference... other serial killers have done this sort of thing intentionally before too, picking victims who are minorities or otherwise lower in society (like prostitues, homeless, drug addicts, etc), because those deaths wont be given much attention and they're more likely to get away with it. it clearly does work in the killers favor...

My take on it is different. I tend to think that he would primarily target sex workers, small time offenders and drug users preferably from poorer backgrounds (he wasn't rich either). Easier to lure with drugs or cash or sex promises. I'm not saying any of the victims deserved such an end. Even the ones who didn't engage in anything illegal, they were not trying to make their schedule and movements known by the authorities. It's really hard after a crime to track the last hours of the life of those victims. That was also before anyone had a gps tracker in their pocket/car. Look at other serial killers, the less easy to track the life of their victim, the better chances they have to evade being caught. The ugly truth is that police work is paid by taxes of the citizens with steady jobs. Therefore one may expect the police to focus on protecting that population first, but also to prioritize doing lucrative police work (seizing drug money, ticketing,...) second. Like BodyCount say "When it comes to the poor, no life matter"

Compare the response to Gabby Petito to the obvious mxrder of Lauren Smith Fields. In the latter case, they just let the guy walk off and even complimented him, instantly believed that a black woman going on a dating app date would just do some substances (which she didn't - an SA drug was found in her system), and the media underreported her story, if at all, and even threw shade on her to imply she was a bad girl and not a healthy, educated, working woman. They even showed a bikini pic of her to sexualize it because they know that'll trigger certain people to feel she deserved it. They even implied that she was exchanging her time for money, which also indicates to people what to think. They even ignored and treated her family badly. I'm so sick of it. They're always around to punish whether someone is guilty or not but ignore us or demonize us when we're the victims. Sometimes I wish...nevermind. But more of my kinfolk would do better to explore the world outside of the hellscape that is the U.S.

This is why I just stay the fuck away from people I don’t know. Park in well lit areas, carry a weapon for self defense, and don’t leave my back exposed. Took getting robbed at gunpoint out of nowhere one time and I’ve never been the same. Fuck being a victim. Also rest in peace all these victims, poor guys.

I refuse to be a victim, at least a living victim. I carry a Glock at all times when I'm not home. And yes, I've had roughly 30,000 rounds of training. Both in the Army, as a Correctional Deputy, and Deputy Sheriff.

Was not expecting a history and geography lesson when clicking on a video about serial killer, but I like it.

The fact that the cops didn't take the first rape victim seriously is fucked up.

@@speedingatheist I was simply voicing my opinion based on the facts presented in the video. I never claimed to be a master detective. But it doesn't take a genius to see that the case was handled poorly.

The ONLY true crime channel I have to switch back to "normal" speed for!!! I swear, so so many others must feel the need to slow down their natural speaking voice and add a "spooky?!" cadence, that I feel the need to speed em up to 1 .25× to listen!😆

Unfortunately, a lot of these victims lived on the margins of society and most of the pick ups and killings were very opportunistic and involved multiple jurisdictions. This in no way lessens the heinous nature of the crimes or the perpetrator. In addition a lot of the smaller police forces are under resourced both in terms of money and experienced officers.

True, the class distinction stinks. About 20yrs ago, two UK doctors whilst on holiday in Portugal, left their children unsupervised, their daughter, Maddie Mccann, went missing. The UK police have spent the past twenty years investigating (holidaying) in Portugal. Most children that go missing are lucky to get six months of police work, yet because of the parents social standing, they're still investigating Maddie Mccann. Most parents would've been put through the ringer for leaving children so young unsupervised, yet these two doctors have faced no punishment. Some people think they doped their children and accidentally killed their daughter. The Portuguese police used a cadaver dog which found signs of a cadaver being in the Maccan's car. They've only ever been seen as victims, but it was their fault regardless of whether they doped their children or not, they left three unsupervised children on their own in a foreign country.

@@cocksure8430 Reply. They do hold some responsibility- the leaving three very young children alone bit of the story when a free childminder was on offer. Your conjecture is that a paedophile was involved, as of yet, no such person has been found, therefor, as of yet, nobody can say with any certainty that a paedophile was involved.

If this were about young straight white men this Monster would probably never have got away with it for so long. Fair play to the one diligent Detective, there's always one who breaks the mould.

Institutional racism and corruption has eaten deep into the fabric of America and I shudder to think where the country is headed. Thank you for your hardwork in bringing us these difficult stories

the more I get into True Crime the more surprised I am at how measured a view of police it gives. no doubt there are plenty of good people who take "serve and protect" to heart but it really does seem like people who put a monetary value on human life, or are bigoted, or who are just plain bad at their jobs can have such a massive impact on police work that being a good cop must be like pulling teeth.

The thing is that anybody who has nefarious intentions, whether it be to rape, murder or abuse children, will always get employment that gives them either access to their preferred victims, or power and a degree of cover such as being s member of law enforcement. If you're new to true crime you might not yet have realised just how many serial killers were once in the military either. Its a lot. A very lot. There's an author, now deceased, called dave McGowan. He wrote s book called programmed to kill which is absolutely excellent. There is a fan of his work on KZread, channel named lolfieldandlove, who began making 10 minute long episodes based on the work of McGowan 12 or more years ago. Those early episodes don't have audio as was the norm on KZread back then but the research is phenomenal. The channel is still making content along the same lines and I think you will be shocked at some of the things many serial killers can be linked to. It's difficult to wrap one's head around and some might find it hard to believe. However the research shows the facts and they persist case after case after case. As someone who's been into true crime since I was 9 years old, almost 40 years now, I throughly recommend it. Start at episode 1 and work through. All the best, from England.

Ya. There are a lot of true crime channels that have narrators who often mispronounce the names of towns, names, even states. It's distracting at the least. I'm glad there are narrators who make sure of pronunciation, it's a sign of dedication to their work and respect for their listeners.

I like Monsters, but the Louisiana Purchase was in 1803, not 1903. A simple Google search shows the corrects date.
