Itoh Peonies, honestly got it.

Do you leave the containers outside all winter or could I store in garage? I live in Plymouth MA, zone 7b. Thank you.

This may not be a typical way to clear out mulch/tree bark but I use my electric blower. Makes quick work of it. Zone 6b. Go Huskies.

Do you know how to take care of day lillies? I don't know when to device Daylillies, Iris, and gladioli. Any help is most appreciated! I just found your video channel. I live in Nashville, Tennessee. I am not proud of it anymore but I try to keep my nose in my own garden!

Hi Fred Scott! 👋🏼👋🏼 Great questions! Dividing bulbs depends on the specific bulb and it's life cycle, but most can be divided when they are usually planted or transplanted, when in a dormant phase of their cycle (best practice). Irises can be divided in August to September, right before Fall/Autumn. Gladiolus can be divided in the early spring or right after they are done flowering in the late summer or fall. The trick to divide them in the spring is to wait for that period of time between when your soil is workable and not frozen and when your Glads start to really grow. Day Lilies can be divided the same time as your Gladiolus. Day Lily care is similar to taking care of other flowering bulbs; once they start to grow they will need regular consistent watering to keep the soil around their roots moist. Let each plant go through their flowering cycle before you cut the flowers (unless you are making cut flower arrangements and then cut when you want) AND don't cut any leaves away while they are still green and actively growing. Once the leaves have turned brown and withered to the ground, then you can cut them completely back. You can induce them to go into dormancy after they are done flowering by slowing their watering over a few weeks until you completely turn off the water. This will help them click over to their dormancy cycle. But only do this after they are completely done flowering. Most like full sun, but some like partial shade where the sun intensity is really high and hot. Hope that helps and always glad to help! Happy spring to you and your family!!😉😊💪🏼👍

Hi Jennifer!!👋🏼👋🏼 Thank you for watching and for your question. Whether you are using an organic or synthetic based fertilizer, find one that is balanced, like a 5-5-5 or even up to a 10-10-10. This will help keep your Itoh Peonies healthy with all the nutrients they need to grow and flower. If you want to encourage more flowering, you can use a low-nitrogen, high phosporus fertilizer, like a 2-6-4 or 3-7-5. A good organic fertilizer we have used with good success is Dr. Earth All Purpose Organic Fertilizer (4-6-5): amzn.to/3M8Y5YC If you don't know, the three numbers represent the percentages of N-P-K or Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium levels in any fertilizer. Hi T Anderson ! 👋🏼👋🏼 Thank you for watching and for your question. It depends on a few things and your goal for planting an Itoh Peony in your garden. Is your ground soil well-draining and fertile? Do you have ground bed areas that have full-sun exposure? What zone do you garden in and are Itoh Peonies hardy in your area? If you can answer yes to all these, then you could plant them in our ground bed. If you answer no to any of these questions, can you modify your sun or soil? If Yes, then you can still plant in the ground. If no, AND if Itoh's aren't hardy in your garden zone, then a container might be a good way to go, so you could then bring it inside a garage (heated) for the winter. Also, if you want the Itoh near your door or entrance, but don't have the ground bed space, then a container can work great. These are just a few instances, but we hope this was helpful. @@SpokenGarden iI live in Zone 5 Wisconsin, winter is very cold and ground will be frozen. I have several Ponies in the ground but don’t know the name of it, they come back every year around this time. I could fertilize the soil and forgot how deep I need to plant in the ground.

Wish i could grow them in zone 8b...wont happen tho..ive seen people out ice on them even...of course it didnt work..

Hi Sislertx!! 👋🏼👋🏼 Thank you for watching and for leaving your comment. The hardiness zoning on the Itoh Peonies can be a little scattered cause there is a lot of different information out there. We were told by the grower for these Itoh's that they can either act like full herbaceous perennials where they completely die back down to the ground every year or they might partially die back to the ground with some stems and even leaves overwintering and being alive after winter. It depends on that winter and how cold or warm it was, like we experience here in the PNW and our garden is in zone 8b. If you get more consistent cold winters, then the grower said we needed to plant the bareroot about 2-2.5 inches below the soil level to help it overwinter. But if our winters were more consistently warmish, then we could plant it closer to the soil surface, around 1-1.5 inches below the soil surface, and the Itoh should grow fine. We would encourage you to double check your local zones average coldest temperatures and compare that to the hardiness of the Itoh. Depending if you have a few micro-climates around your property or home, you could possibly stil plant a couple and push-the-envelope to see them flourish. I grow Itohs in pots in 8b - Carmel Valley California - they grow and bloom great! I don't bother with ice, but I do get night temps at 29/30 degrees for about 90 nights each winter.
