How to grow Itoh Peony Varieties with Ron Boekel -Intersectional Peonies

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this Video we look at Itoh Peony varieties with with Ron Boekel. These are Intersectional hybrids developed first by Toichi Itoh in the late 1940s
Like all peonies ITOH varieties do not like to be moved, so find the right position, and leave them alone.
They do do like full sun and a humus rich well drained soil with some moisture. We suggest preparing the soil well before planting, dig a large hole .7m wide and deep, dig in some well rotted compost, in poorly drained soil consider digging in some perlite as well.
Check to see if yo ur new plant has recently been repotted, if so plant the whole pot for the first year and then dig up and replant (without the pot) in autumn of the second year.
Water in well after planting with a liquid seaweed fertilizer. We are looking for flower growth rather than foliage so use a low nitrogen fertilizer.
The flowers of the first year may be small and few, this is normal, once the plant has settles in you should get masses of large flowers.
After flowering the foliage should be left to die back in autumn, and at this stage the stems can be cut back in the same way that herbaceous types can be.
If you are considering dividing the clump after a few years be prepared for smaller flowers again, as we said, the ITOH peonies, like others do like to be left alone.

I'm a little surprised...I was under the impression a good portion of Australia was in the subtropics and therefore not enough chill hours to grow peonies, but those look amazing!

In New South Wales in the Highlands, Victoria again in the foothills and Tasmania they grow very well. These would be classed as Temperate zones and all get cold winters.

Who decides to name the plant? Great video, short and precise.

Some were named in the original development by Smirnow, who purchased some of the Itoh collection from his widow, some I believe by Itoh himself or his family. HOWEVER we find the naming is a little imprecise. The American peony society has some information.

Our Itohs were slow to flower, took 2 years after transplanting I think. Check soil pH, it needs to be on the alkaline side. Add some lime, 2 - 3 cups. Make sure it gets good sun.

Most growers suggest adding Agricultural Lime to the soil unless you live in an area with natural lime, Peonies originate in China from the Limestone foothill areas, So yes we recommend it.

@@johnnyAGardening Thank you for the very prompt reply. I was considering growing both tree and herbaceous penies with roses. Will this combination work and can the roses withstand the lime needed for the peonies? Much appreciated and love the videos from an Australian perspective as most are either Euro / US based.

@@stephenkendall839 Roses generally prefer a slightly acid soil, so for optimum growth and flowering it not really recommended although we have seen them grown together.

They are OK in full sun except in very hot climates, especially hot windy areas such as on a balcony, so depending on location, some light afternoon shade will be beneficial. They will also need more water in pots, so keep them moist, never wet and soggy, check that the soil dries just a little between waterings, and ensure drainage is good. You may also need an annual application of lime in pots as most potting mixes are lacking in lime. Fertiliser in early late winter. In very hot climates, .
