With Peony plants there are three types, all treated a little differently, today we look at how to plant bare root herbaceous Peonies or 'Bush Peonies', they are easy to grow and provide wonderful flowers.
The best time to plant bare root peonies is in autumn/fall as this gives them time to settle in and begin root development before spring.
They are long lived, easy care and one of the best spring flowering plants available.
We look at how to plant Herbaceous Peonies including soil preparation, site selection and soil pH amendment.

Top Tips include :
Choose a well drained soil.
Choose a sunny position.
Dig in compost and manure to enrich the soil.
Adjust the soil pH with lime if needed.
Plant the Herbaceous Peonies with their 'Eyes' at around 1 Inch or 5 cm below the soil surface.
Water in well with a liquid seaweed fertiliser.
Apply additional fertiliser, manure and compost each year.
Keep the area weed free.

    The white peony you show on this page is a tree peony you should explain the difference to your readers. There is a difference, although the one you planted does look herbacious, tree peonies have Woody stems with eyes/buds on them.

    Wish I watched this video yesterday when I planted two Itoh peonies. The soil in my area is slightly acidic. It appears that I need to add some lime now. sigh...

    its June here in central Florida, I just planted some peonies roots, they wont come up till next spring?

    Hello Joanne, no they will not come up until spring. Give them a little water over any dry periods, and if needed add a little top dressing of lime to the soil. Although you will not see any above ground growth, the root system will still be growing.

    @@joanneshepard5449 Florida is too warm for peonies its a bit of luck needed to grow them there. A good rule of thumb when planting perennials, is it a plant you find in your area or not.

    Horse manure tends to be very weedy, so we do not use it. If you hot compost it first, most of the wed seeds should be removed. Compost is fine, and remember that they do like lime.

    You can, however horse manure can have a lot of weeds in it.
