Just thought you'd like to know that today I watched this video and realized what I've been doing wrong with my petunias all these years! They always got leggy and didn't continue to bloom after the initial set of flowers. This season I'm prepared. This video from nearly 4 years ago is still helpful! Thank you :)

Thank you so much for you feedback :) I am very glad that you found it useful.
I found the best way for me is to locate wilted flowers and cut the stem. So many times I want them to hang on too long, the flower falls off, then I can't locate which socket it came out of and the seed pod develops hiddin away. Took me 4 seasons to figure this out and I have beautiful full baskets now!!!
Thank you
Thank you. That was very simple and to the point. Helped me tremendously!

I always wondered if I were pruning correctly. Good video with nice close-ups! Sometimes I don't know whether a floret is coming on, if it hasn't quite wilted? And, some wilted ones have been pulled off and I wonder whether a new one will come on; and how to know whether I should just cut off? I don't prefer longer videos, but would like to see more pruning & talk as you go? Thanks again!
@iCultivate1
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Marg. I am glad it was useful. Usually those that have “wilted” will dislodge much more easily than those that are just developing, so that may help. Happy gardening 🌱🌱🌱🌱
Hi , I bought petunia plants in Spring in UK and whole summer it gave beautiful flowers in my garden . I found your video very interesting for growing petunia by cuttings . Now here is Autumn and soon winter is coming .. Can I grow Petunia now by cutting or which month ?
I am just getting into gardening. What is the difference between pinching and pruning? Thank you. Great video.
@iCultivate1
3 жыл бұрын
Good question. Often we might use the term “pinching” when describing the removal of individual buds, while pruning might typically refer to a more overall trimming. Hope this is helpful 😄
Thank you so easy to see. My petunias are just beginning to flower, I'll know exactly what to do. Thank you😄 You know the seed pod you cut of after it had flowered can you get seeds for next year.?
@iCultivate1
4 жыл бұрын
That is a very good question. Unfortunately the seeds will not have matured in these pods. Therefore if your would like to collect the seeds, I would recommend not pruning some seed pods off so that they can mature. You will be able to collect seeds from these when they have matured. Hope this helps.
Can I also prune my Surfinia like this? Thanks. This video is big help ❤
@iCultivate1
Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question. Yes, I would expect that you could maintain your surfing’s in exactly the same way. Hope this helps 😊
Can you get a better picture of the new growth please. I'm never sure where exactly to cut back to. Thanks!

I know. I wasn't being critical; mine often look like that too - a never-ending chore!
This really works. Get rid of the "green" chocolate chip and you will have blooms all summer.
Thank you for the video! I'm not sure if my plant was too long at the shops, I've had it for about 2 weeks now and when I look down the plant for new flowering pods to prune to, I just can't find any on any of the stems. Does this mean it's not going to produce any new ones closer to the roots?
@iCultivate1
3 жыл бұрын
I think it is probable that it is actually too young. Give it a bit more time and see. You could join the gardening community at ICultivate.net and share a photo that might help to give some better advice. Happy gardening.
Hello sir, I would like to know what kind of plants on those two large containers, please? I've bought a big pot and I'm not sure which plant that is okay for winter so I don't have to move it into garage. Thank you,
@iCultivate1
5 жыл бұрын
Sorry about the late reply. The plants in the large containers are perennial daisies. They have just been pruned before this video so no flowers are visible. Hope this is useful 😄
This is great! Do you think if when fall comes around I can move my petunias indoors and continue the pruning process so that I can hang them again without having to buy/plant brand new petunias? Or do these flowers only last for a year (hence why they're annuals)? I live in Canada and the weather gets very cold by the end of October. Thanks!
@iCultivate1
7 жыл бұрын
Hi, I definitely think you will be able to extend the life of your petunias by doing this. However, they will need to have good light available to them and as you have said; they are annuals, so they will of course die - they are not going to last another season. But, you will extend their life and flowering time. Hope this helps :)
Thanks for the info, I now know what I was doing wrong with my petunias. But my question is, if you cut off the seed pods after the flower has died. How and when can you collect seeds for the following year?
@iCultivate1
10 ай бұрын
A good question! Once you decide to collect the seed pods, you would leave them on the plant. But of course this also means you have decided that the best of your plant for that year is over. Hope this helps :)
Can you save the seed pods that you cut off and plant them now or next year?
@iCultivate1
Жыл бұрын
Good question. Normally you would be pruning them off before the seeds have matured and are ready to germinate. But if you let them go, you could do exactly that. Hope this helps 😊
Hello! 😊 I've been pruning my petunias by cutting off the little stems where the plant sets seeds just like how you demonstrated in the video, but now my petunias are starting to look really sparse. Should I stop doing that or do I just need to wait for them to grow in?
@iCultivate1
7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this question. It depends on how long you have been doing it. If they start to look too sparse, you can then give them quite a hard prune - by hard, I do mean quite hard - it will involve removing all the existing flowers, but prune across to the entire plant back to the size and shape you would like to achieve ..... ensure you leave some leaves, but they will grow back and you should be rewarded with beautiful new growth and flowers within a few weeks. Please don't be worried if it looks too harsh a prune. As long as you continue to look after the plants, they will grow back, and that includes flowering again. I would love to hear how you go :)
Does it matter if you just pull the entire dead green heads off or snip them at the branch like you are showing?
@iCultivate1
4 жыл бұрын
I think you are less likely to damage the plant by ‘snipping’ using secateurs or scissors rather than pulling. Hope this helps 😄
