Thanks for the video. Im new at this. Loved my blooms a few weeks ago but sadly watched them die away. I knew something was amiss. I'll be dead heading them tomorrow!

Thank you for your question. When pruning, it is very important to not prune too heavily .... this can actually affect the plant to the point where they do not regrow at all. So, as a good guide, prune to just below the latest growth - just below the level of the outermost flowers. always ensure that you leave a good amount of leaf material. On a mature daisy plants, this would usually mean pruning off several inches, not usually more. Hope this is helpful :)
Oh god I nearly died when you cut all them flowers off

G'day from Perth! New subscriber here...my daisy plants are only about 4 months old and I have dead headed them twice now, however they are now woody with few leaves. Soil moisture had been steady, partial sun in our hot climate. I haven't fertilised them as yet. Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Hi Zoe, that sounds very unusual. When dead heading, were you only removing the spent flowers, or some of the leaves also? I am also wondering if there is any sign of pest activity? Any caterpillars, grasshoppers? It is unusual for a daisy plant that is only 4 months old to have lost most leaves as you have described.

@@iCultivate1 Thank you for responding! The first time I only removed the spent flowers, however the second time I cut them back a bit harder because the woodyness was begining to increase. There are no signs of pests on them (the pests seem to prefer my extensive veg garden!). One of the daisy plants in the garden bed is doing really well, but the others are not looking good. There may be a few new leaves coming on them, just a smidge of green on a few stems. I deep watered yesterday, perhaps upping their water might help?
I'm new to gardening since the pandemic, and got a few pots of the african bush daisies (3 in each pot), and they were so beautiful, but now some of the pots have one plant that no longer has flowers or leaves. I was gonna plant them, but should I remove it from the pot?
@iCultivate1

I would either plant them in the ground, or repot them into a new pot with fresh soil - the old mixture has probably had much of the goodness leached out of it. Also, ensure that you remove any dead flowers to encourage the new growth. Hope this is helpful.
If most of the plant is still blooming and I want to take out some individuals, as you did initially, where do I pinch back? Do I just take the head off or do I go down the stem? Thanks so much.
@iCultivate1
6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question. If just pinching out a few flowers, I would recommend doing so near the base of the flower stem. Hope this is helpful 😄
It would also be very useful to have a video on how to hard prune a really leggy Euryops to encourage new growth
What happens if I just pull off the spent flower petals leaving the green?
@iCultivate1
6 жыл бұрын
That will be good in the short term. But, eventually the plant will become long and weak. However, pruning after ‘dead heading’ for a while will help keep the plant robust and ultimately last for quite a few years. Hope this helps 😄
I literally cringed watching you shave those down. I wouldn't be able to do that. I will spend half an afternoon picking through mine to be sure not to cut my healthy blooms haha. But I see why you do it that way. You are a strong dude.

Start of spring you have to. Pruning is healthy and increases the longevity of the plant.
Every time I prune my daisy bushes they die. Even when I only prune lightly or just take out the really woody stems that are flopping all over the place.. What am I doing wrong?
@davothegreat9990

Seems to me the plants was under stress before pruning. Do you fertilize and water enough. Only prune in Spring.
Can i replant a stem?, why is my daisy getting dead leaves? Is it because of too much sun?
@iCultivate1
6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question. It is unlikely that it is too much sun - daisies like full sun. It can be just normal and they simply need to be pruned. I would give that a go.
I never pruned mine in the fall and now there is what looks like dead sticks all sticking out, but underneath is a bunch of new growth (leaves) What do I do now? I'm in CT and it's just warming up.

Hi Laura. I would recommend removing the dead sections and letting the new growth develop. Hope that helps.
What type of fertiliser do you recommend . Thanks
@iCultivate1

Hi Eleonora, I would recommend a slow release fertiliser that is specifically for flower production. If you ask your local nursery for this they should be able to provide it for you. Hope this helps 😀

Thanks Steve great video. Just a question, what do we do with the branches that have over grown and fallen on the ground? If I cut back to the hard wood, would it die?

What is hardwood in a daisy?. I google and can't find.. is it stem.. All my stems are green?. Or is hardwood the name of the stem
My margarita daisy is in a pot. The top is full of flowers. The stem are not green only the tips. It is tall and never been pruned back. How should u prune it?
@iCultivate1
4 ай бұрын
I wouldn’t prune it below the green growth. If you do, I think there is a big risk that you will lose it. Perhaps with your daisy it is best to enjoy the flowers and when the flowering reduces a bit then give it a very small trim. Based on what you described, I don’t think there is any guarantee that it will work though. Hope this helps.

@@iCultivate1 hi thanks for your reply I will prune only the dead flowers then. I’ll let u know what happens
Any rules about what time of year I should prune my cut leaf daisies in Melbourne? I have a lot of spent flowers that I'd like to prune away but I'm not sure if I should do it now, right in the middle of Autumn?
@iCultivate1
4 жыл бұрын
Good question. Now would be a good time to lightly prune. You may get more flowering before winter. Having said this, it will become a little dormant as we approach and then enter winter, so giving it a prune now will set it up for the next spring. Hope this helps.

Prune start of spring. Autumn just take the heads off. Heading into Winter you want your plant in tip top shape for the freezing weather. Pruning introduces stress to close to winter. Essentially you risk losing the plant when Winter hits...
Can you do this in the winter time? Also, I just planted mine about eight weeks ago.
@iCultivate1

Depends on your area. Probably best to prune following main flowering period, in order to then promote the new growth and flowers to develop again - unlikely to have this benefit in winter. Hope this helps.

Sorry about my very slow response. I would not recommend pruning them back more than 30% and even then be very careful - jus a light trim is best. They really don't like being pruned too heavily.

Oh no 🤦♂️. I hope you have more success next time. Is it possible that the seeds you bought were too old and no longer viable?
Like all plants including grass, when it's time never cut more than a third back. Common rule of thumb.

So true most of the time, but Iike most "rules of thumb", there are always exceptions. Crepe Myrtles and Grevilleas ca respond very well to very harsh pruning :)
