tbh I never understood what the fuzz was about. I always saw consoles as highly limited product. Sure, you'll see you occasional post that claims that "there's no point in having a PC if a console costs less" (mainly from console only players either way) - but exchanging capabilities of modding, better user experience, more games available and no subscription cost for just wanting to play online and talking on a slow peer 2 peer voice chat at basically no additional cost for the manufacturer isn't exactly something that sounds too great to me. If I ever would want a console again I'd just straight up let my PC start with Steam in Big Picture mode, hook it up to my TV and have a wireless keyboard & mouse for modding stuff and adding non-steam games to the steam library. Doesn't even matter if a PC costs 400 more.

I had to temporarily use my 11 year old EVGA PSU just to regain use of my computer. I couldn't really game because it didn't have enough juice for my modern hardware.

The biggest reason I would take a $500 PC over a console even if the PC parts are used is that a PC is more then a gaming box. There are so many more uses for a pc then a console. Even if you currently don't do anything but gaming the option with the pc is always there, which in my opinion adds huge value to a PC.

Right but the bargain hunting and researching/picking all the components is half the fun of owning a PC! With my current build I spent an entire week getting my fan curves *just* right, and I enjoyed every second of it, even moreso than actually gaming on the thing. With a console you just plug it in and go. *BORING!* It's like going to a mechanic instead of working on your own car. Where's the fun in that?

While a PS5 may have a few exclusives, there are hundreds if not thousands of games playable on PC but not on a PS5... 3- A PC is not ONLY a gaming machine. You won't be editing photos from your last trip on a PS5. Last point is important why? Because if you need to buy, upgrade and maintain a PC alongside your PS5 anyway, it may only need marginally better components to match the performance of PS5.

Interesting video. There are definitely flaws though. 1, current used prices of the ps5 is not 500. 2, some value time. The time needed to hunt every part and then build it is, I would imagine, not insignificant. 3, risk. so many different used parts from different sellers. decent chance something is faulty, glitchy, or even broken (yes, yes, returns, still annoying) 4, as pointed out before doom, pcs sometimes need tweaking and have issues, compatibility problems, other errors (like before RnC). You do briefly mention these things at the end, but I think it’s important to note those can be bigger issues for some people, myself included. I’ve built many PCs, with a $3,000 overkill pogger wogger gaming PC sitting in my office. I STILL have stupid ass windows errors and things that just randomly break in the OS, and I’m just tired of troubleshooting. I have to imagine it’s even worse on… that. I’m so damn happy to just sit on my couch, pick up a controller from my charging dock, and shit just works. Obviously, console gaming, over a long period can be more expensive than even a higher end PC with the online services being almost mandatory, but also you get a massive amount of free games with PS Plus at least, and good ones too (imo). anyway, I spent way too long on a comment I feel like I’ll just get shit on for. I just see and appreciate the console for what it is. A user friendly, convenient, mostly error-free gaming machine. No more or less. PCs can do a lot, so I use mine for work, and my PS5 for gaming.

Like others have said, your opinion here, while valid, is also subjective. I was a HUGE console gamer up to and including the Xbox 360, but I honestly switched due to something like they weren't going to allow backward compatibility or something and then later rolled back on that decision. I don't remember if that is accurate, I just remember thinking that I don't have this hassle when I want to play my pc games and didn't bother picking up another console. Most of my friends followed suit, which did make the whole thing easier as well. Some counterpoints to consider: - Computers will last through multiple console generations (assuming you aren't someone who NEEDS the ultra top of the line gigachad graphics at all times) - Once you have a good computer it isn't nearly as expensive to upgrade certain parts in the future - The peripherals work perfectly from one upgrade to the next (consoles are starting to get better with this) - The Vast majority of the time pc gamers have the same gaming experience. Outside of launch day issues, I rarely, if ever am troubleshooting issues with a game. This is also the same experience with all of my friends. This was definitely an argument that used to be relevant, but we are in a significantly better place than we were even 10-15 years ago. A few other thoughts, for me personally, it is much much more expensive to get setup on a console than just forking out even $1000 upgrading my computer. After I factor in the console, the $100 controllers x 3 and the online subscription fee, I am already almost there and I don't even have any games to play. Buy a half-dozen games and I'm well above that $1000 mark and still don't have access to the hundreds upon hundreds of games I have access to on my pc. And none of that factors in all of the other things I can and do use my pc for. Please don't also misconstrue any of this as bashing consoles, that is definitely not my intention. Some of my best gaming memories were crowded around the couch playing Halo with my friends. I just want to show how for some people, especially those of us who only have the budget for one or the other, it's not as clear cut as many say.

I got a series x at a pawn shop a few years ago for $300US. It fits on my small desk, and has very few software issues. I can even use a mouse and keyboard if I want to. Downsides… Games are more expensive, but I don’t play a huge variety. It only plays games, but I have an old laptop for all my non gaming needs. It is not great if mods are needed, there is only one game where that’s a problem for me, so I just need to get good I guess 😂. Whenever I price out a new pc I always end up somewhere in the $1200 ballpark for what I’d consider a longish term rig for myself. I just can’t justify throwing that much at a new pc when, like Linus said, this generation has held its value for money surprisingly well and for the most part, the console kinda just works fine for my (admittedly casual) needs.

Idk if building used PCs is becoming really popular right now because I used to consider $50 total for a used motherboard to be a little bit dear, but now you can't even find an A520 or B450 AM4 motherboard on eBay for less than $60 - $70 including shipping. That's not to mention if you buy a previous generation AM4 board that you might need to flash the BIOS to install 3000 and 5000 series Ryzen (if they are compatible). The same with cases in that you can't seem to get a used one for less than $50 and a new one will probably cost you $70 and up. So, even with the best prices listed I've come across, you will already be $140 into your '$500" hypothetical budget leaving $360 for everything else. $60 for a PSU, $70 for a Ryzen 5 3600X, and about $230 for a used RX 6700 and you'll be lucky to have something close to the PS5 performance. Oh, and I didn't even factor in storage, so hopefully you have a spare hard drive and RAM to put in it.

AMD seems to be the only one that can run SAM or Rebar in PCIe 3 because of how Ryzen 3000/5000 is built, Intel may be the only one that can't run it on their chipsets for PCIe 3 and would only be speaking for an Intel platform, if you run AMD then don't run WHQL drivers (unchecked that box).

You'd be much better off going with something like a used 3060ti ($240 on ebay) for a build like this. You get dlss, gsync, great HDR implementation, and great driver support for games.

And in terms of price too, in the EU used 3060ti starts at 120€, and the A770 at 330€. For that same 330€ you can found regularly a 3080.

Totally even a non warranty one would do as most of the products shown don't have one. Bt still a good job by Intel considering fast gpus are changing and entering a market which is being highly monopolize by 2 companies.

or a 1080ti for like $150 which still beats the a770 (less features tho)

I think anyone who builds, or even buys a prebuilt for that matter, does so under the presumption that at some point they're going maintenance a PC, either it be software, or physically replacing something. Its not time wasted for enthusiasts who want a genuine PC experience. However you do have a solid point, consoles don't need nearly if at all any 'maintaining' aside from the usual can of air and updates.

for the record I bought a configurable prebuilt with almost the exact specs (slightly worse) because I needed a new computer at the height of the GPU shortage and it was $2000 at the time. Stuff has gotten crazy cheaper, and the used market is the way to go.

I built a computer for my birthday. I got for the case Antec NX200 M, Micro-ATX Tower, Motherboard MSI A520M-A PRO Gaming Motherboard, CPU AMD Ryzen 5 4500 CPU, AGV Series 500W Power Supply, 80 Plus Bronze Certified, and TEAMGROUP T-Force Vulcan Z DDR4 16GB Kit. I used my M.2 from my other computer. I did not know that the CPU does not support integrated graphics so I got GIGABYTE GV-N1030D4-2GL GeForce GT 1030. It took me about 2 hours to build but it works like a champ.

I can't be arsed with the constant upgrades when you have a gaming PC. At least you know a console game will run well.

Just because new gaming hardware comes out every year doesn't mean you need to upgrade it. There are some people who will go out and buy the latest 4090 to swap out their 3090 but up until recently the humble 1060 was the most popular card in the Steam hardware survey, a card that's practically ancient at this point but still capable. I had a 1060 for years until last year when I finally upgraded to a RX6600 last year for less than $200. It doesn't run everything I throw at it at max settings, but I've never failed to have it run better than console equivalents in 1080p with over 60fps. If you're building a PC from scratch like here sticker shock is a thing and it *will* cost more, but if you only upgrade your system every few years you're most likely only changing out a few parts unless switching to a new motherboard generation. The AM4 socket has been going strong for 8 years and they're still making new processors for it, and DDR4 memory has been out and solid for the last decade.

@@jackinzbox. Honestly, I think a lot of big hardware tech channels do a disservice by only exclusively focusing on the latest gen hardware. I'm not saying they don't (I appreciate the low and midrange budget build videos LTT posts once in a while) but I think it continues to spread the stereotype that PC gaming is still prohibitively expensive compared to console gaming when they're routinely showing the performance of rigs that cost more than a thousand dollars. I enjoy some other channels that focus on builds in the console price range that do indepth analysis about the pros and cons and the compromises you'll make. If a person doesn't need anything more powerful than a chromebook for their "normal" computing needs, then it's perfectly acceptable to get a console. One thing they all seem to do that I respect is plan their builds with an upgrade path so you can make your system more powerful over time without needing to replace it completely.
