Its Sports personality award , the award is about not only what she achieved in the last 12 months but how the public has taken towards Earps, When Dina Asher-Smith won the award I thought she deserved it because she had a great year and her personality shown over other athletes that year, its also about media coverage as well.

She said she played center mid and was Declan Rice … how is that inspiration from the lionesses 😂😂?

Mary Earp helped England to lose the World Cup. She wasn't good enough in the critical final match. So why did she get this award? There are so many better players who deserve it more.

I think it’s the BBC’s fault for not throwing this open to a wider range of sports in the nomination list,including golf and snooker, which were criminally overlooked. The public voted for Mary Earps based on the BBC’s shortlist so don’t blame her if the public voted for her. SPOTY has always been controversial.

I’m shocked that Lucy Charles Barclay wasn’t even on the shortlist. She was a deserved winner of the award as she won the world Ironman triathlon championship which she lead from start to finish over 8 hours of swimming cycling and running. BBC should be ashamed for not even considering her when they have a goalkeeper who didn’t win anything.

My big issue with this is that the woman who finished third actually won her second world championship on the back of recovering from a career ending injury. So it's not that there aren't women worthy of the title, more that it should change it's name to personality of the year as the chances are that the bulk of the public votes were cast based on whose name they know because of the mainstream and social media rather than their sporting accomplishments.

This was after the boikots during the 90's and 2000's. Around 2012 ish this shit started, administrators got hungry for this of the year and that of the year, and we have not qualified even 1 wrestler for the olympics since. 🤮

The trouble is that womens football is at such a low level of competition compared to the men that you can’t compare trophies. Winning a trophy is the men game means so much more, it just does. Any half decent comprehensive school team would makelight work of any womans team

Leon Edwards won the UFC title and has defended it twice and has been completely overlooked.

Leon 'Rocky' Edwards this year became the first British UFC double world champion and he wasn't even mentioned on the show.

It was a public vote. Looks like piers doesn't like democracy. And at this point in time, ronnie has won 7 world titles, not 8 ( as of 2023).

With respect, It is even more strange given that the poor standard of goalkeeping is the biggest problem with the women's game.

Piers, you’re wrong on this. Mary deserved this, she has had many successes over the past year and is very inspirational - and has great personality.

The English men lost, but the manager was at fault for that. Giving young inexperienced young guy's all that pressure when there were lots of older experienced players avaiable. !!!! The women are basically playing a game that is even less than a boys school standard team. So any mistake and each goal keeper will have no chance of making a save, hence why they have so many goals. !!!!! If you like that kind of play, I am happy for you, but for every you, there are a thousand men supporters of the real game. !!!!! 😉😉🙃😆😅😂🤣

Had to laugh a Bianca when she tried to put down Rory for winning a team event but listing losing a team event for Earps as a reason to win.

When it comes to sport, men prefer the company of other men, just as i would also assume women prefer the company of other women. Its a simple as that

UFC champion Leon Edwards should have won it. UFC World Champion who's defended his title multiple times in a physical fight sport. Rocky Edwards should have won it.

Never heard of Mary Earps. That said, I don't follow women's football and I haven't watched SPOTY in the last 20 years or so. I know equality and diversity are at the forefront of everything the BBC stands for now, possibly to extreme levels.

Earp's "famous" penalty save was a cheat (she was over her line by over 1 foot) . you cant award cheats.

It's about personality and not victories or trophies.

I don't know if she should have won over the others, but it's unfair to say she hasn't won anything. Being a World Cup finalist is an achievement in itself; in the Olympics, they call them silver medal winners. Being the runner-up in ANY sport on the world stage is a great achievemet, and she had a lot to do with it. They are also the current European champions. If the men's team had reached the final and had lost to Argentina, I'm sure all the English fans would have been heartbroken, but I think they still would have considered it a successful campaign. Personally, I think her winning the award was politically motivated, and probably someone else should have won it. However, my objection is when Piers undervalues her achievements and all but calls her a loser. I think she's a great athlete, but there were more deserving candidates.

When you take away all the bluster and nonsense surrounding women's football, it's really just a low level minority sport played by very few people. I’m not sure how Mary earps winning this is a question, she’s fantastic. The women’s team did not fail they made the World Cup final and in amongst that she won lots of individual honours and the Arnold cup. Conveniently kept on being ignored. Mary earps has serious personality and inspires many people. Well done earps!
