As someone who’s recovering from PTSD, this episode (momiji’s story specifically) encouraged me to access my traumatic memories rather than repressing them (which you can’t do with PTSD), or wishing them away (which prolongs the recovery process) 💔

I think I like the older version of the crying. When he's still in human form he looked so indifferent. But when he changed onto rabbit, we could look that he's crying and we realized thay he was trying to hold his tears while telling about his mother

What makes the scene with Tohru's mom even more heartbreaking in the remake, is in the original she has all these bandages and shit on her face which sort of moves what your seeing from 'dead' to 'unconcious' visually, because why would you bandage a corpse? In the remake they have her face covered with a sheet, alluding that it's pretty fucked under there but she's dead so what are they going to do about it? Such a small detail but it's so much more impactiful to me.

If I were to be honest, the bandages gave the ‘hope’ that she was gonna live until she actually died. I mean, as an art direction, that’s how I would’ve done it, but idk what goes into the minds of a producer.

Fruits basket (2001) helped me as a middle schooler to face so much of my trauma and to live the life I want to live, forgive and move one. It is such a big part of me, I am so grateful for it. If I never watched it, I probably wouldn’t be here.

It seems you are just comparing adaptations. I think it's really important to add that the Momiji subplot was actually first in the manga, then moving to the anniversary story. The 2001 anime strangely moved it around and 2019 restored it to it's original order. I think it's better this way as it focuses on feelings of loss and regret and when watched here, it feels like it helps give Tohru more strength and eases her feelings a bit for the anniversary story. Switching it around, confuses the message IMO.

Great video! I don't know if you have read the manga for this amazing anime, but I can say as someone who has the remake is following it almost to the 't'. I agree the original anime did somethings better if just from small things like face shots, but the remake seems to be really living up to the hype it was given and the feelings the manga gave when first reading it.

I think the remake handled it better. Dont get me wrong, I still love the original, but to me the remake really shows Tohru's personal struggles. In the original I didn't even know that she felt like that about her moms death. She always talked about her death with such resolve. In the new one you can actually see her struggle. The struggle that was also in the manga. It just makes the story so much more, and you can connect to Tohru so much better. Love the remake, good job guys :) 👍👌

Btw i really love momiji in the 2001 they make momiji as cute as possible but in the 2019 you can know momiji cute in mature way. The way their express momiji in 2019 is better than 2001. ..

Oh my god, I've cry over this scene every time I watch it, all 3 versions of this scene are just so heart wrenching. While I love the overall tone of this episode in the remake, I actually really liked how the 2001 anime changed around Tohru visiting her mom's grave and Momiji telling her about his mom. I think the way the 2001 version sets up the story allows Tohru to mourn her mother through hearing Momiji's story, and to be sad and heart broken about her situation in a way she doesn't allow herself.

Tbh I didn’t like Momiji at first becoz I thought his energy is a little bit too much for me lol (I dont hate him tho), I’m just super introvert and I don’t really like too noisy people. But after this episode, I totally changed my mind and he became 1 of my favorite character in this show. He’s like a ray of sunshine despite of living thru a very dark past, at such a young age... He’s so strong and independent, sometimes, I wish I could be him

Great job man I was sobbing so hard during this entire video and you had some great comments. I cried even harder when you mentioned your own personal experience visiting your grandmother's grave site and eating there and how you said that you think she'd be happy. I have so much love for Momiji and wanted to see his backstory again but couldn't figure out which episode it was so I was happy to find this video. I just finished season 2 and I have to say this episode made me cry the most, although majority of the episode involved tears on my end.

hello good sir i am letting u know that i found ur vids thru The Shigure Analysis & i really enjoy ur content!!!!! it's refreshing to see someone talk abt the show without bringing up the manga (though the manga is God Tier lol) i've been watching ur comparisons as a refresher for s2, and ep14 is likely one of the best to compare all three media: manga, 2001, 2019. i'm an advocate for the manga & 2019, but from this episode it really reminded what was so great abt 2001. i loved the random music, the funny moments overexaggerated, and the sadness that was hidden underneath it all. however, what i LOVE abt the remake is that it's telling the story how the author wanted it to be told. natsuki takaya told the story of fruits basket BEAUTIFULLy, and while my heart has a special place for the silly yet dramatic 2001 anime, i can definitely see the 2019 version having a longlasting impact on the anime community, despite being based on smthn over two decades old. anywho, love the vids. keep up the good work!!!! :D

I love all the points you made, the momiji mother scene was definitely one of the saddest moments for me too 😭😭😭 and I honestly love both original and remake. In the remake it is a lot darker but in the original momiji is standing where the light is and his mother is turned away for it. She has turned away from her son and can only see darkness. If she was but able to turn her head and look at momiji and truly see him, she would realise what a light in her life he would be. But she doesn’t turn around, she doesn’t want to see him and instead chooses to have Momiji erased from her memories.

TLDR Momiji’s backstory is so heartbreaking! Jeez...just let the cursed Somas be happy for once because they’ve ALL got it rough! Seriously, that’s the important part of this comment...I beg you don’t read the rest unless you’re going through bad/dark times mentally because I mention how it affected my ability to watch this video and episode and if you don’t get it it’s meaningless to read and I feel like a bother when I type stuff the majority of people won’t understand or want to read (the fact that I type as if I was actually talking doesn’t help either). I hate feeling like a bother but I needed to get it off my chest... ...I had to close my screen and just listen to the analysis for the part when they went to...y’know... I couldn’t watch the actual episode AT ALL once I heard this part was in it. I have a paralyzing phobia of those places because...stuff happened in the past...and it’s so bad that even hearing or reading the word is enough to send me spiraling into a panic attack so I will deliberately avoid anything involving those places...but I’m working hard on trying to heal (it’s been OVER FIVE YEARS...and I can repress emotion since I’ve been numb for long periods of time, but not the memories...WTF BRAIN?!) so I tried to be strong and just listen, knowing I’d hear the word and even that sent terror coursing through me, but I did my best to not completely freak out and made it through the rest of the video...my heart is still racing though. Because I couldn’t even watch the actual episode I wanted to know about the other parts of it, even though this particular scene was also in it. I managed to not have a full-blown panic attack though, so...that’s progress, I guess? I dunno, it’s just really hard to deal with...but I wanted to know more about Momiji’s backstory and now I do and dear god is it depressing! Also rabbit Momiji crying is just...heartbreaking. I agree, he needed that hug and I’m glad Tohru gave him one despite the Zodiac curse. Just let the cursed Somas be happy for once, jeez!

Get over it, really? In her mind, he was basically gave birth to some weird, unhuman creature (for your info, newborn rabbits aren't very cute, just look it up). When she was given the baby, her child suddenly turned into sth fitted in her palm, it's a huge shock if you ask me. That and combined with postpartum depression (I think you probably don't know this) completely destroyed her. It takes a huge amount of strength from a mom to accept this curse. And not everyone is mentally strong. P.S. This curse also affect the decisions of closed family members of the zodiac too so there's that.
