The old version has the comedy scenes, the 2019 has the drama. I can totally see why I like 2019 more, they balance the comedy and comedy well ^^ and they follow the manga. And we can appreciate that YUKI hAS NOW A MAN VOICE, finally!

Honestly, when I first started watching this show I started with 2019 and due to my dyslexia I tend to watch Dubs, so I thought the "Yuki sounds like a girl" thing I was seeing in the Fandom was a honest to God joke. But hopping on KZread proved me wrong, and I was like "WHERE?!" when I finally heard Yuki's voice in the 2001 original, I just about fell out of my CHAIR!

I'm surprised no one mentioned how in the 2001 version, Tohru's grandpa actually calls her by her name while in the reboot he calls her by Kyoko cause it's SUCH AN IMPORTANT KEY THING THAT COMES INTO PLAY IN THE FUTURE REGARDING TOHRU. Also it breaks my heart :') But I guess it's cause I read the manga so all these little things the reboot as been adding and keeping in hurts x10 more. The reboot does such an amazing job laying the groundwork for future chapters leaving little easter eggs and foreshadowing Also at 11:52, the reboot does an amazing job in consistency and detailed work by having Kyo and Yuki's shadows by the curtains at that time lol. It took me like.. 3 times to realize this (I've rewatched this episode many times cause I was watching it with others but also cause it was amazing haha). This was one of the best filler parts I've seen added cause it was nice to see the lead up of Kyo and Yuki coming to get Tohru.

@@Animeworld-wu1uq Excerpt from the Fruits Basket wiki article on Tohru's grandpa: ". . . since he has called his granddaughter "Kyoko-san" a lot, she has gotten used to him saying that. Though its revealed in chapter 122 he calls her that to tie her and Tohru together since Tohru looked like she would fall apart after Kyoko's death and because he himself wanted to remember since he kept losing people important to him (his son and Kyoko)."

I completely forgot that in the original he didn’t call her Kyoko! You’re right that so important, although to be fair the first anime was made back when the manga was only a third of the way through, so the creators didn’t know certain little details like that would be important later.

What I love about the remake, when she is telling them about the renovation and her impeding move... the fact that she doesn't let them question anything, she immediately gets up and retreats herself. She can't deal with showing her own emotions to them and letting them know she is not OK. As soon as Shigure says anything, she already has switched on the happy mask (in this case) and left the scene, in order not to be caught crying, sad or feeling something she feels she has no right to feel. We are also left with the guys just startled having no say to the news because she dropped the bomb and poof, left.

  • @sylver_drawer

When Tohru comes back to her grandpa’s house, a thing I noticed between the two is that in the remake it felt like her father’s family was more welcoming in a way (how the whole family went to meet her at the door, and how they welcomed her immediately). In the 2001 version, it felt like they didn’t care about her as much as only two of her dad’s family went to greet her. Especially the line delivered by her aunt, “I didn’t expect to see you so soon... You certainly don’t waste any time,” feels a bit like they would have preferred it if she took longer before living with them. It gave a very subtle feeling of unease, allowing us to quickly figure out when her aunt calls for her that something is wrong. However, in the remake, it gave off the feeling that Katsuya’s family also very warm and welcoming, making it a bit more sudden when her aunt calls for her. That’s just what I felt, anyway.

I loved the old Anime from Furuba and tought the new one could never compare. Especially because of the New drawing. I was so wrong. The new one is 1000% better. They catch the feelings way better. They are extremly near to the manga and just everything is so perfect and catches me every second! This episode is way better in the new one, than in the old one. It is way more dark and gloomy. I loved that. The old one couldn't get the sad feelings like the new one did.

If you read the subtitles of the original, the reason Yuki calls the son a lowlife is because he straight up calls Tohru a tramp to Yuki's face whereas in the newer version, the son talks like he's Tohru's friend when Yuki distinctly heard him insinuate, both in this conversation and from hearing them speak to her, that he thinks she's a tramp.

I have a preference for the 2001 version. Whilst the remake did a fair job, it feels nearly like Tohru trying to be helpful, only causes further drama. The original through small moments and darker visuals, less "talk", it really portray a more raw version of Tohru. I feel like I'm getting to know Tohru in 2001 But the 2019 nearly leaves me unable to relate and asking if she was just more honest, there would be less problems. So that extra depth, the contrast it would give, would provide a real foundation for why she does it the way she does.

I feel like the 2001 anime does a really good job at showing how they're all affecting each other and becoming intertwined in each other lives while the 2019 anime does a good job at bringing all of the character together but still giving them their individuals stories. Different but equally as wonderful

When I watched the 2019 episode for the first time I remember that I saw their shadows in Tohru's POV of the Honda Family Scene and for the *life* of me I couldn't figure out what they were. Once I realized they were Yuki and Kyo- during their POV of that scene- *I LOST my shit!* Oh my god! It was just... YES! Attention to detail and interconnecting those two timelines of the same scene. Personally, though this may be because I watched the 2019 version before the 2001 version, but I think the newer version uses the visual medium better than the earlier version. I know "show don't tell" is an oversimplified way of explaining the rule, and sometimes breaking it is justified, but I feel like when it comes to things like memories and even just adjusting the way the camera is facing during the conversations is better than having things explained. The scene where Tohru explains that she's leaving comes to mind first, which while I like the fact that all the boys get one-on-one conversations with her, her *telling* Shigure the issues with her family seems out of character for her and using her memories of her family to point it out without her having to tell someone about it. Also using the Fruits Basket Scene is also one that sticks out to me, minimizing her internal dialogue and letting the memories play out. Only adding her dialogue to brings out her current thoughts.

Actually, it’s within this episode that also shows exactly why Kyo would make a good partner. He’s the only one who, like her mother, keeps enforcing the factor that she should be selfish once in a while. Meanwhile, while the others don’t really say that, maybe once or twice but Kyo is the only one who CONSTANTLY tells Tohru time and time again that’s okay to be selfish.

And many scenes more. Long before i used to neglect this anime whenever i went to anime websites, but upon watching it and finisihing it in few days, i am not only entertained, i also learn life lessons. I love fruits basket. Now i understand that these kinds of animes touch the heart of every person and TEACH us something worthwhile. I have no regrets in watching this 2019 remake. I really really love it. Now i have interest not only in action and magic filled animes but on inspirational... All of us may have a dark painful past but it does not hinder us to love. I hope i can meet a wife as good as Tohru 😄😄😄

In the episode 5 of fruit baskets I always noticed that the family is there watching her cry and it always ticks me off that they don't do anything that's so cold hearted, she's crying people for crying out loud God damn. And then you'll see Yuki comes in and saves the day and then Kyo drags her and says come on we're leaving, I kind of like the original better because you got that background music, ( more feeling to it) 2019 is doing okay still doing good for the remake. Thank for the comparison,

I couldn't get enough of Fruits Basket that 2 days ago, I just had to rewatch this remake for the third time while also rewatching the OG of this episode after 18 years! What an eventful and masterful remake! 😄👌🏼 I was bawling so hard 😢. Such an impactful and emotional scene 😩. Then I watched your video comparison review this afternoon. Incredible! 😄👌🏼📹 This episode hit all the right feels and emotion buttons 😩. Also, when Kyo 😾 mentioned to Tohru 🍙 he would be annoyed if a person can be selfish everyday, I think he said that since Kagura 🐗 visited him the other day. Kagura was in the previous episode and was constantly bothering Kyo for all her "love-me" 💖 or "marry-me" 💍 reasons. Although those scenes were created for comedic purposes, viewers can clearly see Kyo doesn't like Kagura one bit 😞. I am deeply sad for Kagura 🐗, especially since I can relate to her unrequited love 💔. Also love your commentaries! After listening to your comparison review, I can clearly see now why Tohru is the luckiest girl in the world: she has wonderful friends who truly treat her as true family 🏠🍙🐁🐈🐺

I admit that while I like everything else better in the new episode, I prefer Tohru’s speech admitting she wants to stay in the original over the new one. They’re both great but Tohru says less in the original and in this case I think less is more. She’s still not at a point where she’s good at opening up emotionally to others and so I believe her giving her grandpa and family an entire speech feels unrealistic compared to her shorter confession in the original. But, of course, Kyo and Yuki overhearing it is done much better in the remake. Especially Yuki actually getting to hit the brother. We all wanted him to do that in the original.
