The 230’s are actual great bikes for what they are. They are not no Euro bikes, or race bikes. But they are very reliable, take a beating and keep on ticking. You have to remember these are half the cost as other bikes.

Also. You don’t really want a kick starter if you have electric. Much easier to start when on off-camber situations. It’s an enduro/trail bike. Not meant to do big jumps or anything.

My son has owned 2 ttr’s, a 2005 125 and currently a 2012 230. I’ve owned a 2003 ttr 250 for the past 12 years, all 3 have been stone reliable. I highly recommend ttr’s. They are excellent trail bikes and with basic maintenance will serve you well for years too come. By the way I’m 55 years old and my son is 24, wouldn’t trade the years of bonding with my son while riding for any amount of money. We have been riding for 12 years now and I wish we still had the time to ride like we used too, unfortunately we both work full time and I work 12 hour swing shifts so not much time to ride anymore.

TTR230 easily one of the BEST bikes ever made. Simple mechanically, low compression, air cooled and extremely low maintenance. Seat height is perfect for many at 34 inches. Forest Service here uses them for trail maintenance, not because they suck, but because of the exact opposite. This one is destined to not run right as it's spark arrestor is completely gone, has not been rejetted and no airbox mods most likely. Air/fuel mix is all messed up, running lean, plug is probably white. . GREAT BIKES when setup properly. They are what they are, trail bikes. Loving all the Yamaha TTR content as of late, all great bikes.

  • @jonnyonwheels

  • @jarvislarson6864

Nonsense....backpressure robs performance unless talking about 3 piece exhausts (header/mid pipe/ silencer ) and header only exhaust so short scavenging is lost then in that case open flow hurts performance because exhaust isn't long enough to cool and shrink gases as it travels through piping...and no spark arrester made affects performance change,it just makes loudness annoying and allows backfires to include flames exiting exhaust

The 230 has been in production for nearly 20 years, Yamaha must be doing something right! I have a 2009 and love it, had a 2009 CRF230 for awhile as well and for beating around on the trail worry free, you can't beat them. And they run FOREVER on a tank of gas! I'm well pooped out before the need to top up comes along. My buddies that ride 2 strokes are always having to pack gas along with them on long rides, but not me! I prefer the Yamaha over the Honda 230 simply because it has a serviceable oil filter, you have to split the cases in the Honda to change its oil filter. Guys claim you can run it for life without servicing it, but I'm old school and want it changed every oil change.

Every ttr makes an amazing trail machine. I have a ‘15 ttr125 have never gave me any trouble. With these bikes as long as you do basic maintenance oil/ air filter etc you would be surprised how reliable it is. I am outgrowing my ttr125 considering I am coming up on age 15 so I have thought and decided that my next bike will be a ttr230. I want a reliable bike with decent power but has potential to be great out on the trails. I believe the ttr230 will fill in the boxes. Ride safe everyone

The TTR 230 was and is my first bike. For the price, if I had to redo my decision, I probably would’ve just gone with a straight 250, but the TTR is serving me well. It’s heavy as all hell and the fuel adjustment screw is in a wildly annoying area, but those are really my only gripes. I don’t need it to be fast, I’m riding wood trails, not race tracks. And for as heavy as it is, if I can learn to muscle this around, every other bike to come will be that much easier. I think the real problem is too many people don’t take good care of their bikes, or really anything they own. People think because tools are meant to be beaten that they aren’t also meant to be taken care of. Some people don’t even fuckin wash their bike after a ride. Your bike will be shit if you treat it like shit

On your new land have a house + work shop but also need a cheap pole barn with cement floor and not pay for storage fees anymore for the bikes and quads and street bikes you want to keep as your personal collection

Just a comment on the trail riding , you should bring a hand shears or a two landed loppers and every time you go for a trail ride cut a few of the worst branches etc that are in your way and eventually you will have a mostly clear trail, it’s what I do usually

To me it sounds like it is running terribly lean, or maybe the ignition-timing or the spark-plug are not okay 🤷🏻‍♂️

got one new for my daughter a few years ago. she would go out on the trail and half an hour or so come back with spokes snapped in rear tire, well every time she rode it this happened. bike had maybe a hundred miles on it and I pulled the motor and scrapped the rest

Get the biggest tallest fourhweeler you have a get a battery powered bush cutter/trimmer or hand held loppers and stand on the wheeler while slowly driving and cut anything that's in the way in the trails. Ide love to see you ripping through the trials

TTR is a great starter bike. You can beat'em, toss'em and drop'em, it will keep on running. Low on acceleration but enough grunt to make it throught the woods. She is a heavy beast though.

My 2007 ttr230 also takes a while to warm up, they must come a lil lean from the factory..Other than that the bike has been great all these years..ttr sure feels light to me after getting off my KLR 650😅, that thing feels like a tank..

If it tool that long to warm up then the carb. is still running way too lean. A severe lean condition like that can make a bike feel very sluggish and overheat the engine .

SWAP IN A KNOCK OFF TW200 CARB its a diaphragm vs the stock cylinder slide carby. I have one in an 06 ttr230. Starts no choke needed and runs like a WR250 1st and 2nd gear much more useable.
