As I'm sure a lot of you will know, the vintage watch market is currently in a very strong position. If you browse the websites of various vintage dealers, you’ll see that classic watches from the likes of Rolex and Omega are selling for even more than their modern-day equivalents. Whilst that might seem quite illogical, it really is unsurprising when you think about just how scarce good examples of these watches are becoming. After all, by now many are over half a century old.
Of course, one such collectible watch is the Omega Seamaster 300. In particular, the 2nd generation Seamaster 300, which was introduced in 1964 and which would be manufactured until 1970. This model would become one of Omega’s most iconic, and it was even issued to British Royal Navy divers.
As such, it's hardly surprising that this is such a desirable model today. It has everything a vintage collector could want. Not only is it a really beautiful looking watch, but it was made by one of the most well-known Swiss brands and has a history of usage by the military. The cherry on the cake is that with a 42mm case, it’s the perfect size for modern tastes.
Of course, such desirability can also be a bad thing, because it can give rise to fakes.
Which brings us on to the WatchCo Omega Seamaster...

    The recent auction scandal regarding the "fake" Omega rather puts a dent in the purists arguments. Omega has even suspended their "Extract From the Archives" service because of what went on. Myself, I recently bought a virtually NOS Watchco Baby Ploprof on the Shark Mesh. Paid about the same as a higher-end Tudor Sports & am loving it. I'd only caution to make sure your parts-bin build is fitted with a suitable donor movement, having the correct reference & correct vintage serial. Sellers of watchco S/M 300's seem to be upfront on what they're selling...not so with Shom or Baby Ploprof unfortunately.

    Help! What do I give my dad on his 80th birthday? I'm considering something in the $750 - $1500 range. The ones I like the best so far is the Tissot Gentlemen Powermatic 80 Silicum and the Longines Flagship Heritage. What do you think about these choices? Any other I should be considering? He's not a watch collector, just someone who deserves a nice watch. He's someone who doesn't like anything too feminine or modern/outlandish looking, and he's someone who mostly wears blue jeans and a checkered shirt, rarely a suit and a tie. He actually likes square/rectangular watches, but I haven't found anyone I like in that price range. I'm sure he would appreciate a nice round one just the same. I'm thankful for your suggestions.

    Nice looking watch. IMHO it's a Franken because it is assembled from different parts bins and also not by Omega. And because of the later, to me it's not a real Omega. The problem I see with these is, that without corresponding papers/documentation it could be sold as a "real" SM300. and that's an absolute NO GO in my book. Also for a "Franken" it's a damn pricey thing they're offering here.

  • @1977ajax

    @1977ajax

    Hardly the case. It is assembled from genuine Omega parts of the correct type and date, just as Omega would do themselves. Omega supplied their own genuine stock parts to their service centre in OZ, and you could not tell the difference. If a watch is sent to Omega for repair, exactly the same process occurs - you must therefore believe that a watch repaired by Omega is not a real omega. Ridiculous.

    @@1977ajax In my book: If an Omega was not made in the factory at Bienne ... it's not an Omega. ALL Omegas are produced and assembled in Switzerland. This was not. It was assembled by WatchCo in Australia and not by Omega in Switzerland. The question also bears, should it even state "Swiss Made"? Because at least 60% of the labour must be done in Switzerland. Still, it is a nice watch ... but it's not the same watch as the originally Omega-manufactured OMEGA Seamaster. It's a WatchCo (Omega) Seamaster, made from parts acquired from Omega, not by Omega. That's simply not the same.

    quote: "open and honest about what these Seamaster.s are, I do not see the problem". Creating new Seamaster,s from NOS, donor movements, they are not vintage watches. Sorry, not at the moment they are sold. The (resale) value of these new pieces is depended on the rarity of the true vintage pieces still existing. So Yes it is a scam. A watch that never has been assembled by Omega, is not a true Omega. The fact that Omega was upset is enough to see the harm done to Omega, to the vintage piece owners and in general to the watch branch of AD. I agree that technical these pieces are better than the vintage Seamaster. Spare parts used for creating new "vintage watches" are lost for maintaining the true Vintage pieces still in use from the original Seamaster. So harm is done, it is not a win win situation.

  • @1977ajax

    Wrong. It WAS assembled by Omega at their Australian service centre. Did you even watch the video. I couldn't get it serviced in China because all the watchmakers were screaming "FAKE!" One even tried to smash it with a hammer, which caused a fist fight and police to be called (my girlfriend there was able to prevent me from being arrested). Needless to say, I sold that Watcho and moved on. But nothing I've purchased since has felt as amazing on my wrist. By the way 6000 is an insane amount to ask for a Watchco. You may want to do some research before dropping your opinion. During the 1960s when these Omega Seamaster 300s were originally made, Omega did not place a serial number on a stainless steel case, just on the movement. These cases originally only had a reference number. When Omega later created these "service cases" for their 1960s model, they followed the same practice of no case serial number, instead just relying on the movement serial number for identification purposes. You can argue that these watches are fake if you wish to but that the case doesn't have a serial number is not a legitimate argument. The movements are original Omega from the 1960s and the cases, bezel, crown, gaskets, case screws and clamps, dial and hands are all genuine, more recent Omega service replacement parts.

The video states exactly the facts and history of these Watchco watches. That these Omega watches don't have a case serial number isn't the issue. Another example is that 1960s Speedmasters don't have a case serial number nor do their replacement cases. Please spend some time and research 1960s steel Omega watches. If your point is that these watches weren't assembled at the factory that's a another matter but vastly different from what you argued for originally some months ago.
