    Interestingly this sounds like the opposite of most cheap bright microphones. I decided to listen to your recent TLM67 and it's not as detailed but not too far off sonically. I think there's *some* distortion in the mids somewhere but I think that'll be imperceptible in a music bed. Very impressive.

    I think you’re right. It’s kind of nice what’s happening in the mids and it may help cut through a bed better. It would be a ridiculously good mic at 10x the price. I’m officially blown away.

    Pretty awesome Mark! I'll let you know what I think 😉. Reminds me... A few years ago I was similarly kinda surprised by the relatively cheap AKG Perception 420 (and others predecessors in that line). It replicates an 87 capsule and quite stunned me at a price of - ballpark, 75 bucks used. Some mods exist that put them in the hard-to-tell-the-difference range with an original 87...tho that's become a lot more common since these first rolled out. Still have a couple around. Maybe one to check out some time! I found even stock it was pretty impressive. But, yeah! this is a cool find!

  • @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff

    @MarkYoshimotoNemcoff

    Thanks! Oh yeah! The Perception mics all have a circuit that is nearly a straight copy of the u87 schematic with the same de-emphasis circuit built in. They also use a very excellent Takstar capsule that is super consistent and a very close frequency response match for the original Neumann. That mod you mentioned seems pretty easy. It's replacing that last capacitor before the capsule from the cheapie ceramic cap to something less hard-sounding. It really is a sleeper mic.

    The p420s tend to go around $150-$200 used. They were about $400 new. You might be thinking of the p120, which was the budget version that lacked multiple polar patterns and a lo cut filter. Both are great mics.

  • @CptBerns

    @CptBerns

    4 ай бұрын

    @@in.der.welt.sein. the p120 has a low cut filter and a 20dB pad, just like the p220 has. But the p220 is the same mic as the p420 but without the polar patterns, the p120 just isn't. The p120 doesn't even have a large diaphragm. AKG started off with three excellent mics in the series: the perception 100, perception 200 and the perception 400. Then they replaced them with the perception 120, the perception 220 and the perception 420. Only the 220 and 420 were just like their predecessors, but with a 20dB pad instead of a 10 dB one, but the 120 was a new mic. A terrible one. Then they replaced the perception series with the black p series. Again, the p220 and the p420 are excellent mics, almost identical to their predecessors. The p120 is again a new mic. A little better than the perception 120, but still a terrible one. I own two perception 100 mics, a perception 200 and a perception 220. All excellent mics. But I would never buy a perception 120, nor a p120.

    Hi Mark! After watching your vids I’ve decided to get this mic alongside with v47 just to check what’s up. C414- 18dB of self noise is most likely right as I’ve compared it with tlm 102 12dB and I can tell huge difference right away. Still under $50 for a new mic with shock mount (plastic) and cable (cheap) it’s just a great deal if we don’t expect any fireworks. Sound is ok, bit thin, harsh in upper frequencies comparing to tlm102 which is quite bright already… I didn’t expect such a great body, built quality is top notch and on the level of big brands. V47, more expensive, big disappointment. Box says it has 24db of self noise and yep, it does, thick awful noise. Sound is warm, dull, muffled, it has some top end but not much and it seems like all the details are drowning in the low end. Accessories are great - full metal shock mount and hakan p110 style foam pop killer, really good quality. Build quality of the body of the mic is amazing, materials and the look of it… oh it’s a beauty. Shame it doesn’t come along with the sound. Great body for mods and diy stuff for sure as it will look beautiful in any studio. In overall I’m really surprised with both mics body build quality, sound is meh. Especially v47, body worth every penny, but sound is a no go. Keep up the good work Mark!

    Thank you for reporting back. Sounds like the V47 is a killer donor mic platform with all the trimmings. Shame about the sound, but yeah the bodies are incredible for the price. There’s a guy named Michael Fuchs on GroupDIY who created a small pcb set to build a 251 inside a tiny BM800 that could be insane in the V47 body. I really appreciate you taking the time to examine these mics and reviewing them for us.

    Sounds pretty smooth and natural, but doesn't blow me away. I suppose a real 414 (short of maybe a brass capsule) wouldn't blow me away either though, at least for VO. While it (admirably) doesn't have anything "bad" going on, it doesn't really have anything interesting going on either -- for me. But... $40! @@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff Yeah it's very interesting. I'd just be cautious about the internal build quality. Have you opened it up to see yet? I recently bought a dynamic Fifine K688 mic directly from China. It's sort of a knockoff of a SM7B. It looks great and I was surprised at how well it sounded too. I was using it for my Zoom music meetings with clients. However, in the middle of one of my meetings it just POPPED! It now sounds like a blown speaker. Lol. What the hell happened there? I wasn't doing anything straining (just talking at the time). So that kind of stuff would be my concern. If I tapped my xlr cable (anywhere) it would come through really loud in the mic. Like, you might jump!!!! Lol. Had another mic from China too. If I just wiggled the mic a little bit, you can hear the internals moving or clicking here and there. All that kind of crap. Do you have any strange stuff like that going on?

    I have opened it up and taken it apart and put it back together. It’s all surface mount components and a small transformer and it looks tidy and well-assembled. Maybe I’ll do another video showing the guts. So far, now weirdness with it, but if it dies on me I’ll just use it as a donor body so this is all gravy.

    Luckily, no. I order a fair amount of mic parts, capsules and stuff from Aliexpress or 3u Audio that comes from China and I haven’t had to pay any import fees yet. But it’s generally all small stuff that doesn’t come with a high value declaration.

    My bad. I should have started with "Brace yourself" or "hold on" or "grab onto the towel bar" first. It's why I installed a 4 point NASCAR racing seat harness on my toilet. You just never know when a low price will send you off the edge, and that water is COLD. Stay dry.

    Yep. I just bought one. You sold me. Wish you could get a commission on this. You’d have earned no more than $7. FYI, it cost me $111.85 CAD all together to ship to the the Rivendell outpost on the outskirts of Mordor here. I’ll allow it.

    Nice! I don't need a commission. I'm happy just shining a light on it and sharing the find. Yeah, they raised the price on them to $48.50 US. Apparently, they also discovered they were charging too little for shipping. So, that's about $80 US total, which ain't bad at all. And it comes with a bespoke shock mount, too. Trust me, after you try it, you're going to want to buy a second one, if even just to have as a spare.

    Right? I’m sitting in the box cutting commercials on this thing, asking myself if I’m crazy putting my work out on a $40 mic, and I get word back from a client they loved the spot I did for them on it. I have a theory about it and it has to do with a particular conclusion I made yesterday about the sound while recording some content I’ll drop probably this Wednesday. I think there’s one thing this mic does exceptionally well and that one thing is pretty remarkable considering the work I do.
