As a radio professional, the mic technique you were using is my preferred method, and how I teach others to use the mic. i.e. the mic is pointed at your mouth, but your mouth is NOT pointed at the microphone! This negates the need for extra pop filters, although sometimes the extra pop filters can help keep a consistent distance from the mic. If you need the bass-doubling effect of close-micing, don't use the external pop filter, just use this mic technique and you can get right up on the mic without popping.

I first saw Mark's video on this mike, and now yours. Truly great sound, but it's agonizing because one doubts their own ears just based on the price, so it is a nutty predicament. But yes, it does sound that good. But what is the most amazing aspect of this mike is that it was able to totally reject the sound of the ocean in favor of your voice(s) and guitar!! I like your video and humor. Can I ask, What kind of mic stand and what cable do you use in the video? On the subject of compressor / post-processing: You can make your voice appear really appealing and pleasant generally speaking. But wouldn't that be the purist form: only mic, preamp and recorder? Does this so changed voice still fit to my original? Sure, every mic has its own sound. That's why you can never record completely pure. But isn't it artificial to change the sound afterwards? My guess: one approach would be to capture the sound as it was there. Or then just as good sounding as possible, but not necessarily "original". Time preservation, doesn't that imply a pure, unchanged, at that time received and so existing sound? Such philosophical thoughts. Thanks for your reply
@TheRecordist
Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the complements! For any mic review I do, I’m not adding any post processing at all. That’s just straight mic, preamp, recorder. For the music part, I had to add a little or else the frequencies build up and get very annoying. For field recording, I generally leave the sound unchanged. When preparing audio for listeners, it’s important to remove annoying resonant build ups or painful frequencies because if you don’t, the listeners get ear fatigue and it becomes difficult to listen to for long periods. Each mic also has its own sound and they either flatter a voice or the opposite. It’s hard to find a truly flat mic that represents precisely what it hears. Also, there are so many variables that change the “natural” sound. But great food for thought! Thanks!

Well, for starters, I don’t have an AKG, C414B to compare. Because if I did, you can be sure I would have compared them. Secondly, there is no way on earth that the BFL sounds anything like a real C414. The point, for me, was not that it sounded like a C414. Sounds like Bai Fei Li is a bit noisier in the pauses, compared to UA DLX. Maybe next time you can provide 1-2 seconds of silence for both :P. I have recently realized that the MIC's self noise is actually (obviously) dispersed across the audible frequency spectrum, such that some MICs have a higher pitch self-noise and some not. I am not sure this is a parameter which can be reviewed in an easy/swift fashion (especially if the audience does not care much about it), but having e.g. the Audacity "Spectrum Plot" comparison between the two MICs (for the silence section) would be really useful for some of us. Thanks for the review.

I didn’t find it very noisy at all. And there’s a part of the video where I was debating with myself about where the noise level truly is and I was taking some small pauses. I used no post processing at all, so this video is straight 414. However, you have a good point. Ideally I would do a proper test in an anechoic chamber, but alas, I don’t have access to one. If you: 1) Have a reverberant (echoey) room. 2) A noisy place (street noise outside) or pets or kids or roommates or any other noise) 3) Intend on talking very close into the mic. Then you need a dynamic. But if you: 1) Have carpet and a lot of stuff on your walls and in your room absorbing the reverberation. 2) Cannot hear traffic. Have no kids or pets or people making noise. 3) Will not be speaking directly into the mic Then you can use a condenser. Do you already have a recorder or interface?

@@ppuniisher1559 well, you’re asking an audio pro about fixing it in post. The answer is to never leave it for software to fix. If you’re looking for the best possible sound, for your situation, a dynamic is more suited. Shart in, shart out. But if you don’t mind glitchy or artifacty audio and want a condenser anyway, and you want it super cheap, the Bai Fei Li C-414 (24mm capsule) or the V10 will work. The V10 has more self noise.

This one I like.....sounds really good for the money. What about for music though? Ah... There it is... Not really a natural choice for the guitar but good on your voice! You could process the guitar and make it sound good. It got kind of close... Not on the low end. It sounds really cool though. Oh wow it sounds way better when you're right up on it!

@@TheRecordist ok. Question. What's the capsule size of the one you reviewed? Apparently there are two...one I believe is a smaller 25mm capsule and the other, I believe is 34mm?
@TheRecordist
Ай бұрын
@@ramspencer5492 well I reviewed both on this channel, but simply put, the larger one is smoother, and the smaller one picks up more transients. So, depending on what you prefer, those are the differences. I will say that the 25mm is more of an electret condenser while the 34mm is a true condenser.

Hello, young lady! A C12 or U47? Haha. Wow. Lofty! Well. Those are rather darker mics as compared to more modern mics. What is your budget? Cheap but smooth mics range from Røde NT1 ($270), or the MUCH better sE Electronics sE4400 ($499). An amazing sounding tube mic that will blow your mind and the other two mics I’ve listed is the Lauten Audio LA-320 ($499). But those all might be way out of your budget. Here’s a working link for the BaiFeiLi C-414 x.alibaba.com/AvNwX0?ck=pdp It doesn’t sound like a U47 or a C12. Perhaps you might like the BaiFeiLi V5? Let me know your budget and intended use. Hi...it´s me Thulsa...Doom...my dear Conan. Let´s say the the Bai Fei Li costs 50 Quid. Lets also say after manufacturing the mic, Bai Fei Li wants to make a profit...the parts that make up this mic cost a lot less than $20. How long will the diaphragm last? I´ve seen..or rather heard it on other cheaper and very cheap mics...the diaphragms don´t last...some less than a year. Condensers, wires...everything is dirt cheap and I wouldn´t touch one with a barge pole. Because I´ve got a couple of those el cheapos in the basement...some of them since Groundhog Day ago.

@@TheRecordist Good question. While it's not made of premium components, the circuit board is solidly constructed and Iv'e seen quite a few mics with much worse builds. Here I'm going to just go with a little thing a very wealthy pal of mine used to say to me all the time, "we're not here for a long time, we're here for a good time." Either way, if it fails, I'm just going to gut it and mod it. Heck, if I had to buy a new one every year, I'd still be okay with it.
