Cheap Vocal Mics That Don't Suck

Музыка

I search for an affordable vocal mic in the vain of the Neumann U87. There are so many U87 clones on the market today. Some are super affordable and surprisingly great mics. I stumbled on a maker of U87 clones from Brooklyn, NY who makes extremely affordable mics that sound great.

    Could you do some in depth guitar/vocal demos etc of that GTZ, and maybe compare it to a better mic as well?

    I will. I need to get a better mic. Maybe. Rode NT? I don’t have anything more than an MXL hanging out in the studio currently.

    I know what I'm about to say is a cliche, but it also happens to be true. Yes, top of the range equipment is nice to have, but the most important thing in the chain is the performer, whether you sing or play an instrument. Crap in , crap out. Any audio system is as good as it's weakest link. You may own a really top end mic, but is the rest of your recording enviroment also top end? Are you a skilled engineer that knows how to get the best out of equipment or able overcome any issues? Will a good mic just highlight any issues? I get that it's great to own nice things, but throwing money at a problem isn't always the best solution. Anyway, thank you for your content.

    Interesting stuff. I have had a few MXL mics, and wow, the good, the bad and the ugly! Two quick examples for me, I did pick up a 770 a couple years ago, and wanted to run over it with my car. Thought it sounded thin and terrible, very lightweight and cheap feeling, and overall made me sad inside. On the other end, I picked up a used MXL3000 for about 75 bucks on Ebay, and holy crap, outside of the hefty noise floor, (19db!) This is one smooth mic. Blew my Rode NT1 out of the water.

    @@JayceAllanGuitar They're great platforms for modification too. Oh, I also scored a used MXL V88 for 30 bucks and it's brilliant. Originally retailed for 700 supposedly, although I doubt they ever really sold for that much. Fun tip... both the 3000 and the V88 I got super cheap on Ebay from pawn brokers who didn't know how to test them so sold as "parts"

    I'm guessing that this guy is buying clones off of Temu and just changing the brand stickers. I bought my TLM clone for $9.00 and my U87 clone for $13.00. How about you buying the ones off of TEMU and doing a comparison?

  • @JayceAllanGuitar

    @JayceAllanGuitar

    I looked at Temu but don’t see these exact mics. My guess he’s going through Ali Express or similar. You can get the individual components there, almost as a kit and some of the vendors will even put a custom logo on for you. I have a shootout between these mics and the MXL brand. Just haven’t uploaded it yet.

    @@JayceAllanGuitar So your thinking just like me. I have several from Temu / Ali Express, not bad mics IMHO. I also have an MXL that works well. If you want a great high quality mic check out the Rode NTK. I bought mine used off of Reverb for $300. It blew me away. Looking forward to your shootout video.
