Great advice. Thanks... Ive purchased the flagship mic purely out of intrigue and wanting the experience. I picked up a customer return in perfect condition for less than £1500. Before that a brand new for less than £2K here in the UK. Is it me or is this mic on average more expensive in the States? Cheers :)

Like the way you Speak, sir, calming and polite , as a VO artiste i use the TLM 103 with Apollo twin , My eyes are on the U87 , budget is not an issue , but also the Sphere modelling microphone is making me curious , I am sure the U87 will always be easier to sell if i don't need it compared to Sphere as it works better with the H/W. Your Suggestion please - Thank you

Honestly if you’re happy with the 103 I think it’s a great voiceover mic. I don’t have experience with the Sphere but I have the VMS modeling mic and I like that

I had the opportunity to try one in a studio my friend had access to, it definitely didn't suit my voice and he wasn't experienced enough to make it sound good. No hate against the mic but as many are coming to the realization, price doesn't equal the right choice. I have have an AT4033a and it's my most expensive mic, I rarely use it. I bought a cheap Rode NT1 signature series recently and it suits my voice much better and it came with a decent shock mount, good quality cable and pop filter... That being said, I have recorded good sounding songs with 15-20 dollar mics that sound great to me.

I bought a matched pair almost 20 years ago and they are great mics. Very versatile mics. Not good for every voice but, they are great for most situations depending on your environment and how you position them on the source. They are worth the investment if you're serious about recording.

I just bought a U87 stereo pair and received them today. I set them up for my grand piano and man, they sound great. Luckily I live in Europe so the pair cost about $1000 less than if I bought them in the US. Still, $6,666 is a lot of money. Glad I spent it though, they sound fantastic.

Very different mics but both fantastic. The Manley was better on higher/breathy voices in my experience, and I didn’t end up using it on as many instruments. I’d take either one for a vocal depending on the singer but as a general use mic I’d take the Neumann.

So you didn't really answer the question though. Like, what inside that microphone are we paying for that costs 3500 to make? Is it a special metal? The way it's wired? Black magic?

As a computer programmer I drop $4-5 a year on equipment, software and services to make my money. I assume that if your voice is your money maker, then $3.5k isn’t that big of an ask.

I'm a huge believer in keeping your equipment up to par, but spending 4-5k a year as a PROGRAMMER is absolutely wild. That was a subtle flex and not realistic for 99% of programmers.

@@SM-mt1ox ah I should say that I’m self-employed so have only myself to look to for equipment and as they say time (computing in this case) is money. In this case, it justifies the costs. So my point was, if your income depends on having certain equipment, then you need that equipment. I know truckers who spend way more than $5k on repairs and upkeep. Again, if it’s your job.

Is a U87 really worth $3,500 in 2024?! Yes. It's a Neumann. Not only are they arguably the best mics on the planet, but their customer service is absolutely stellar. Let's say you buy a nice $200 Chinese-made mic. Then, five years later, you have a problem. Do you think you'll get any helps from the manufacturer? Do you even know who the manufacturer actually was? Of course, if you're like me and can't pay $3,500 for a mic, if the budget is there, and you want a really fine mic, Neumann is it. Note: This does not apply to the TLM 102 and 103, which are Neumann's "budget" mics, and are not comparable to the U87.
