Recording a Piano Neumann U87 Ai Stereo Pair "Blumlein Microphone Technique" Review Clair De Lune

Музыка

The Neumann U87 Ai microphone has been a staple in recording studios since the late 60's, and has acquired quite the legendary reputation over the years. I have wanted to get my hands on some of these for years, and I finally was able to do that. These microphones have a truly incredible sound, part of which is from the amazing mic technique used in this video, the Blumlein Technique. This achieves a rich stereo sound that makes pianos sound incredible. I am very happy with the sound of the mics, and will definitely be featuring them on the channel in the future.

    Amazing recording. I can easily hear how the low notes are coming through the left speaker and the high notes are coming out of the right speaker. It truly feels like I'm standing there. This is extremely helpful. Thank you so much for posting it.

    That sounded ace! Just the right amount of warmth, and a flawless frequency balance. You did very well indeed in buying those Neumanns, and now I think you've found your default way of recording that Model D of yours. It doesn't get much better than this, if at all.

    A very interesting technique to put the microphones so close to each other but this really works. I knew the neumann u87 already but not in this formation. The sound is amazing in this setup and catches every tone, every resonance and almost like a reverb. Beautiful. As you mentioned there are a lot of ideas about how to do this. We had different microphones around the piano and one pointed inward but the result you got here is amazing. I hope you are going to do a lot of tests by example with the celesta or your marimba. Nice. Thank you for sharing and playing.

    hard to credit the new mics with the outstanding music recorded for this video. maybe i'm wrong, but i think you were inspired to perform the selection slightly better than as routine. fair enuff then to be glad for new mics up to the occasion. glad as can be for the combination. and of course, you have a fantastic piano, in a great venue. it could also be that for you to do so well, you had the benefit of having been provided the correct bowl of M&Ms, none of the wrong color, nor too stale. a word i have been bitter about, in my experience, is "discover." i can't easily say now that too much bad news has been my discovery. rather, with the discovery of better news, there has often been no appropriate "development." in your hands, the new mics surely might enable discoveries, but more importantly, not without appropriate developments. among your peers, the tandem realities (d&d) enable some to use the best opportunities, rather than sometimes when such are too compromised if opportunities do not rightly bring together any for all the storied equipment could permit. thanks for taking the time for a great performance shared online.

    @@milanrecordingstudios9042 Thank you so much for the quick response. May I ask another question? If I buy such microphone of high range is it also necessary for tone quality to have a very high end interface? I like to buy an usb interface to connect with my IPad. • @milanrecordingstudios9042

    @milanrecordingstudios9042

    2 жыл бұрын

    We at present do not record through an interface as we feel that would lower the quality of our recordings. We plan in the future to try out a interface that we have here at the studio, but have not even unpacked the box as of yet and it has been around since last year. I believe that for us the magic in the sound is running it through two vintage Sennheiser phantom power supplies and also vintage 1950's Ampex preamps by way of a high end mixer (56 channel). Although smaller mixers can work well, as the mixers get larger for some reason the sound does improve for some applications. We run all singing recordings through a vintage Ampex 8 channel mixer from the 70's or 80's once used by the BBC and others.

    Very nice indeed. :-) Which Ampex mic preamps specifically do you use, if I may be so blatantly nosy. I went back and re-listened to the last third or so of this video through my stereo with a pair of the Andrew Jones designed and voiced 'wonder puppy' Pioneer SP-BS22-LR loudspeakers (I have downsized to a 3 room apartment and after signing the lease and setting up shop, I discovered that the main room has a nasty bass resonance; my venerable and beloved ADS L520s simply overpower the room). Not quite LS3/5As, but not that far behind either (what douth thou expect for $99 per pair on sale). Being an old, unrepentant physical media kind of guy, I would be very much interested if you release a solo album on CD (or even better SACD, but then you should also invest in a good DSD ADC and DAC for best results; long live the unicorn formats). You can get reasonably good sound quality from KZread, but it still falls short. p.s. I just subscribed to this new channel.

    I have listened to a few online, but personally I was never really that impressed. In some recordings they sound very nice, but in others they they sound just O.K., because there is not one mic set-up for all recording sessions. I think if you are looking for a budget mic it could be interesting in some applications, but the Neumann is in a different level entirely. I do in fact prefer the sound of the U87's, but it goes way beyond just the quality of the sound and continues at how flexible the U87's are. I just set the mics up with no test and no corrections and what I heard was what was on the video. Of course what is so cool about the U87's is all of the different configurations that you can place these mics in, and also mix them with other mics to create an infinite amount of position possibilities, too. We own about 15 mics here in the studio and this was well thought out and honestly one of the easiest decisions we could have made.

    Milan Recording Studios that’s wonderful- great to hear you are digging the new addition to the mic locker! The R88 isn’t a mic for all occasions, especially in less than great rooms, which I feel some ‘samples’ are recorded in. My fave Neumann’s are U67’s or M50’s, but U87’s are no slouch.
