Ғылым және технология

Blumlein pair is great for all-around ambience, or if the performers / subjects are all around. M/S is great when you have a singular subject or a close group, but want to capture a bit of width / ambience too.

No! "Blumleing is for all-round use" is the big error that many people make. Blumlein is NOT suitable for all-round use. Because - and many people don't notice this - the area outside the front angle of 90° cannot be used because the signals are out of phase. Likewise, only the rear area within 90° can be used. Signals that are out of phase always create the phenomenon of "pressure on the ears".

My favorite was the U67 Blumlein setup. I prefer the blumlein because it feels like the instruments have more of their own space and I prefer the U67 because it's sounds more balanced then the antelope in my opinion. Nice video!

Sounds great! My question is: Where are the mics placed, I can’t see them through the video. Thank you and keep going! 👏🏼

Hi! We have a lot of mics placed behind the camera. The microphones are about 3 meters behind the Conductor. In this video you listen the U87 against the large diagram Edge mics. In another video we compare the Verge against the Schoeps. The other video is here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fpVnw81rZsesqZM.html

in my opinion, the Blumlein has a much more clear stereo image. It's easier to tell where the instruments are within the stereo field with this setup. M/S sounds way too wide and unclear. And because the mid mic is not facing the cello or violin, the bass and soprano voices (most important) are lost a bit while listening in mono. Blumlein sounds more professional for sure. Thanks for this comparison!

M/S: I basically only use small diaphragm microphones, and for the "M" part I only use pressure receivers - i.e. omnidirectional. Usually Neumann KM 83 + KM 86 or Schoeps MK3 + MK8

Blumlein and MS are very popular on KZread ect. But in professional sound studios the most used stereo setups is still: So called near-coincident techniques (DIN; cardioid, spaced 20 cm, angled at 90° - and variations from 16 to 32 cm distance - ORTH; cardioid, spaced 17 cm and 110°- originally 113°). Old school A-B techniques in every kind, and XY techniques. Blumlein is from the times were fig.8 was the only choice (aka. ribbon), and MS is fine for film sound because you can alter the width in the mix without phase problems (the same goes for XY as it can easily be changed to MS), something which should not be necessary in controlled studio environment.

Blumlein is also popular with Grammy award winning engineers such as Bruce Swedien, who used the Blumlein setup exclusively, on pretty much everything he recorded for Michael Jackson.

(Looking at the picture of the drum setup for Omar Hakim in the article there is no Blumlein pairs).

What is this string quartet called?

I dont like EITHER ... Figure eight mics always have different responses on the back sides ... Also , with the Blumlein pair for example, the right side facing mic's rear facing side picks up sound from the back left side ... Am I wrong in my thinking ? Wouldn't this create a flip flop of the rear facing mics ?

Both setups is good for film work, but the spacious quality is much better with angled A-B setups. Just my opinion from 35 years of sound studio work😄

sorry guys.. dislike. You should show us some drums beat, because of bigger picture, larger dynamic range, more specific transients, room reflections on attacks, better overview over the room accoustics etc. This neverending legato shows just nothing (not even the mic differences). Do 2nd video with drum, you will have my like for sure then.
