God, I used to love our U47s when I worked at EMI. The 87 was considered almost newfangled and modern :D. Ah, I’d forgotten about the 67s! And what was that big one with the valve box? M-50 or something? Telefunken doesn’t count in this thread, it’s not a Neumann :D.

You know spender do more these on music recording devices from history. There is a microphone at cbs studios that Sinatra and many famous singer sang through that cost all ova about 100 dollars when purchased now worth like 100 thousand dollars.

So "It looks just like a TeleFunken U-47" from Joe's Garage by Frank Zappa is just the older version?

I worked at XM Satellite Radio for a few years. Including hanging out in their main recording studio and performance space. In addition to awesome acoustics, it’s always had the best in equipment, like the Sony Oxford mixing board it started with and a set of monitors that cost the price of a house. But it also has a set of vintage U87s that are great for recording the human voice. I’ll always remember about twenty years ago when Mavis Staples performed one day with just her voice and an occasional piano or guitar to accompany her. But mostly just her voice. There wasn’t much difference between listening to her in the studio or through the U87 and the recording and playback chain except perhaps the microphone was a little more detailed in her voice and her sound and not as much of the room if your were standing a few feet away. With either, you were struck with how she could sing. She’s truly blessed by God. The big difference is that recording will last forever and Mavis is in her 80s now. Those mics are worth every penny when you are recording folks like Mavis.

As a Beatles fan I've heard so much about how they preferred Neumanns over any other mics. This short was informative.

Neumann mics are definitely some of the best out there. I have a matched pair of KM 184's that I use for acoustic recording.

Bit of product placement…I hope they showered you with goodies. Or at least a U87. Anyone got thoughts about vintage ones vs Ai ones?

Unless this has changed over the last 15 years, don’t radio DJs tend to prefer large diaphragm dynamics like the Heil, the Sennheiser 421/441, or the E/V RE20 (the one we engineers used to use mainly on electric bass cabs)? This is a genuine question. Has this changed?
