I like the format of this video, with the different segments. I also love your content when you do a dedicated video on the history of whatever. You have a lovely speaking voice that I think anyone could listen to without fatigue. Of course singing is excellent as well. This is the first time I have heard the guitar stories segment, and I think that it’s great. It is always interesting to hear someone else’s story on what inspired them. I think that wireless mic you tried out sounded fine, probably great tool for audio away from the studio.

Since i'm not a musician but a soundtech , i'll comment on the Rode-mic. It's not as "fullrangy" as the other mic's you're using. And putting it between your t-shirt and you body make it sound a bit lowpassed and "middy". Those RODE mics (and other brands), doesnt cost much and in those cases you get what you pay for . But with an external lavalier it might sound "fuller" :). Love your channel !! Greetings from Sweden

I liked the segments too. And because you asked, I have to say I do prefer the sound of the usual microphone than the portable one you tried. Your voice is fantastic on the usual microphone. About the RODE, although many people use them, I feel the portable RODE did only reproduce a portion of the usual sound sharpness, depth and width. Maybe the room did not help, I wouldn't know.

I cannot stand streaming services as they serve little purpose for me, and I despise the ever increasing subscription model for everything. I refuse to do that. For me, Spotify and the like serve one purpose - to check or demo stuff to see if I want to buy it and nothing more. And why I still buy is very simple. I know myself, and I buy and keep. I still have my vinyl I bought as a teenager, I still have my records and CDs back when I used to DJ, and I still have all my albums I've bought since then. And I still play them. Subscription models are not only predatory, but have absolutely no reassurance that they'll be there tomorrow - why should I sink any money in that?

I find the problem with buying a vynal record is what do I play it on, It's been years since I've owned a turntable, cd player, or tape recorder. Until recently I was downloading cds, which I got for free at my local library, or the ones I already had, to my i-pod, which was a prize I won at work. To me that was a great way to hear music. I wish him and you all the best, also the new mic sounds great!

i recently released a limited edition of cassettes which i hand etched from the inside, double layer translucent and cardstock j-card. $33.33 per tape. this gets you the album, a second short bonus tape of unreleased material, digital download and the standard edition to come [which this edition funds], sent to you before pre-announcement. almost like subscription per album you get access to it's alternate releases and related tidbits. i don't think this exact method is for everyone or every album of mine, but it sold out and hopefully it inspires others to innovate new marketing strategies. i've shipped out cassettes to my top supporters then announce the release the day the tracking states it is scheduled to be delivered. this way they see the announcement, order it and it is outside their door.

Making music can be very expensive and making any money from it eludes me (however I’m not inclined to perform live at my age) So my last album I recorded on my own, mixed and mastered on my own and released it. If you take out the cost of equipment I’ve managed to keep the costs very low. I’m releasing a physical cd and will sell it for £6.00. I won’t make any money from that, but hopefully I’ll gain fans and more importantly bring some joy to listeners ears. But streaming, although the returns are rubbish unless you have a big audience provides a global audience that I can access and grow for no cost.

It's been interesting watching these new (old) models develop. On one hand, there is the Marxist Labor Theory Of Value, where the artist feels the production effort should determine the value, vs Market Theory Of Value, where the customer decides the value to themselves. In the second case, and that's the environment in which we live, the production costs are irrelevant to the buyer. I think you're onto something with a relationship approach - the price charged is a membership fee, of sorts. The value for the buyer is not just the music, of which there is an oversupply generally, but also that they are paying to feel part of something exclusive. Perhaps the subscription-based fan club is where the future lays. As for the $99 album, I doubt someone is going to sell many $99 albums unless they have a VERY dedicated fanbase first. Again, the production cost is irrelevant to the buyer, so confusing those two theories of value isn't going to lead anywhere lucrative.

That is indeed the thing, aye. For me, I will never pay that kind of money for an album. I am the same way with gigs - we used to pay £2 to £3.50 to go and see bands back in the early 80's. Then promoters started charging more and more ... I think my 'last straw' moment was when I paid £50 to go and see Fleetwood Mac and also spent about the same again in travel to get to the venue. I love music, even more so when it's live, but parting with a £100 to see a band for a couple of hours ... that was too much. I've never been to a gig since that didn't have a reasonable ticket price. And prices have only gone up to astronomical heights for the big bands now, so I missed out on seeing Pink Floyd. That is a shame but what they were asking for a ticket was mental.

Especially when proxy mailers are involved. Of course, I buy it to support the artist, even if I purchase the vinyl version. I may be of a certain age but I am not a Luddite. "When you account for all the expenses that go into making an album, I don't understand how records were every ten dollars". In the 1960s LPs cost $3-$5 USD, that would be equal to $25-$35 USD today and today LP records go for $35-$49... Cassette tapes were introduced and cost $6-$10 in the 1980s, ($18-$30 USD adjusting for inflation). How did they do that and still make so much money? Because they sold 10x more albums and that's not an exaggeration. In a free market system, for a product to sell it has to be priced at what people are willing to pay. If the cost of production, marketing and distributing that product doesn't lead to a product affordable enough that people will buy it, then there is no market for that product and it will fail. But there's a conflict I think, Artist do not view their music as product, but as a work of art. Similar to how artist prints may go for hundreds of dollars, my music should cost more and be valued as a work of art. That depends on how your fans view your product. My favorite singer-songwriters, true artist. People like Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Damien Rice, Josh Ritter all embrace the streaming platforms for distribution. They probably understand their music, although very much art, is also very much a product that has to compete, every time someone decides to listen to music they, most will use streaming services and if your music isn't available there, you create an inconvenience that not many will embrace. They will just listen to something else. Also, some may be turned off, if I can stream Bob Dylan and more obscure singer-songwriters like Glen Hansard's music, why can't I get Mary Splendors? Does she think her music of more value than those others? I'm just playing devil's advocate. No matter what you do, it's going to be an up hill battle. I commend creativity and the $99 record attempt by this artist.

Hi Mary, it is what is is: hiring musicians, technicians, studio, ... all adds up. 100$ for a CD is a bit much, but for CD, vinyl and download is acceptable. Considering the costs it becomes completely understandable and I too think more and more musicians will take this approach. As for the new wireless microphone - it sounds way different than your usual mic. Your voice is still recognizable but somewhat thinner (as if all proximity effect is gone) and - for the lack of a better word - untreated (think raw recordings vs studio processed / mixed tracks). Just my 0.02€. Good luck! BR, M

I don't really know Thad Cockrell well, but I have to say that I wouldn't spend 99$ for an album (bundle) for various reasons: 1) I don't listen to vinyl (don't have a good player), so I don't want to pay for this medium if I can't make use of it. 2) 99$ is way out of my comfort zone for one album. 20 - 30$ would be fine. Also, there is no possibility to actually quickly listen to it afaik - for downloads, you could listen to a 30s segment, and for physical copies you could listen to it once in the shop... 3) I don't want to buy any more physical copies - I have >2000 CDs at home, and I have to say that I'm running out of physical space. Nowadays I buy digital downloads (no streaming), but I really don't want to add more physical copies to my collection... I completely get the argument with respect to streaming platforms, but I'm out when a super-luxury price tag is added.

Good for him. Everyone thought the internet would level the playing filed for artists. It did, for a few who "went viral" (i.e. worked hard making videos, and got lucky, just like the good 'ole days of the record biz!). But for the most part, it saturated the market with so much music too easily available, the value of music spiraled into the dirt of that "level playing field". Streaming services are essentially parasites living off a now dying art form. Spotify pays around 1/20,000th of what a sale does per track. Compared to the cost of years of training, honing our skills, performing, and making records, every 20,000 Spotify plays accounts for a $19,999 loss, not $1 in profit. But this isn't the record industry's fault per se, it is streaming itself and listeners who wanted everything free, and buy streaming services instead of paying artists a decent rate for their hard work. Quality music and art are *not* free to create. Streaming cheats many talented, regional or lesser known artists out of a decent livelihood,. Most artists never got rich to begin with. That's a myth. Now there are fewer below the Taylor Swifts (who are corporate backed and manufactured, btw). Eventually it wont' be worth anyone's time to even write a single song. I gave up songwriting, producing artists and making records for this very reason. It costs too much to give away a large portion of my potential income so listeners don't have to fork out a measly $10. Many people spend more on coffee at Starbucks per week, or day, than many artists make in a month, or year, off of streaming. Compared to the cost we've shouldered for decades now, $99/record is a great idea.

When I was a teen in the 80s, albums and record stores were the best! I just spent 100.00 for two concert tickets. I vote for record stores and buying albums vs. stupid expensive concerts. Today, I dont pay for either. In other words, music is somewhat free on streaming services and I WILL NEVER ATTEND ANOTHER CONCERT DUE TO TICKET PRICES! So, now, musicians arent making 1 cent from me, and its not my fault.

The music steaming industry isn't collecting the money that people are willing to spend on music. Roughly between 1995 and 2006 I spend like 100 - 150 euros per month on new CDs. Now people pay 10 euro on Spotify, so that's an enormous loss of money going round in the production of music. Imagine if teens and people in their twenties spend 100 euros per month again on the music from the artists that they like, all artists would benefit. Spotify and streaming services may seem like the saviors of music after the "illegal download decade" but they have further degraded the worth of music. We need a totally new music distribution system that is fair and sustainable.

Back in my younger days when i was a total videogame nut (i still am) i bought videogame soundtracks from Japan for around 50 to 80DM (the old german currency) so i am no stranger to pay good money for good music as long as it isn't just a jewel case and only two simple sheets of paper with a lazy, bad artwork. But it has been a long time since i have been to a music store to buy music albums because today hardly any store that had a big music section with records, cassettes and CD's have only left a small corner with hardly any choice whatsoever..... your album was the last i had purchased for quite a while. There is just no place anymore where you can physically browse through music available which is a sad thing and younger people nowadays that never experienced that will never know what that feels like..... or what they're missing.... and why this is the main reason i have involuntarily stopped buying music albums..... 😟 Regarding the microphon, it sounds perfect and i don't care about the looks. Yes, it is a video but without proper sound it doesn't make any sense watching it. 😊 Guitar stories, yes please! And congratulations Karl, that is a really nice bonus! ☺👍

I can tell I am getting old because I am gobsmacked by these prices! We used to pay a couple of quid for an album back in the 70's and 80's. It was when CD's came out that the prices got hiked and settled into the ten quid range - way too expensive but we were a captive consumer base. That is until friend groups started having one person buying a CD and everyone else copying it. Business never learns that overpricing leads to eventual market collapse. If your product cannot be made at a cost that allows for a reasonable sale price then, sad to say, economics doesn't care about your feelings and your business will fail. That can mean that an otherwise good 'product', such as good, creative, music, disappears. We could be heading for a world where AI garbage is all there is when players like Mary stop trying to make a living from being a musician :(

I'll start off by declaring that I'm old. I'm in my 60s and recall having to save up pocket money for an album. I find it very difficult to understand how that same album now costs little more than a Big Mac Meal. Would I pay $99 for an album? It's a little unfair for me to say yes as I have the means, but putting it into perspective, would I pay $99 for Dark Side of the Moon, for Bat out of Hell, Rumours, The White Album. The answer is obviously yes so I say bring it on. Maybe it's a generational thing but I love owning my CDs. I wish I'd kept my vinyl but I didn't, so the CD's are the next best thing. I love to stream, I listen to loads of music on my Echos and on KZread, but I still want the physical disc, the cover art, the sleeve notes, the whole kit and caboodle that makes up an album. Maybe I'm a dinosaur, maybe I'm out of touch, but it pains me to think of the number of musicians that are producing excellent music but not able to make a living from it. Thankyou Mary for raising this.

I played guitar for decades before I thought to myself that it was about time to learn how to mod them. So several years ago I started changing pickups and hardware on all of my electric guitars and you know what? It made me appreciate them even more than I had already. It puts a cool personal touch on all of them. Keep it on your list of things to learn. It's really rewarding.

Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails did a similar thing when they broke free from their contracts with In Rainbows and Ghosts albums respectively. If I remember correctly they released the digital versions on a ”pay what you want” model. But we’re talking about bands with decades in the industry always putting out material that both fans and critics adore. I don’t think $99 is outrageous for a vinyl+cd+digital download release. If you’re a fan you’ll buy it if you can afford it. BUT I would like more clarification on the ”it’s not going to be released on streaming services” statement. For how long? What if Spotify offers him a deal he can’t refuse? Or Tidal or Apple?

Physical records are still great as tangible products and for supporting an artist that you like. But there is a huge downside: shipping and taxes can cause a remarkable overhead. As an example, I preordered Mary's first album for 29,95 eur, which I consider a decent price for a CD for an artist that you also want to support. However, getting the CD to Finland meant +12.95 eur for shipping, and I also had to pay 11.04 eur VAT for customs, and another 3,10 eur handling fee for post office (although I did everything online). The total cost for the CD was 57,04 eur and the CD itself was only 52% of the total payment. I don't even want to know what the overhead would be for an album that costs 99$! To be honest, I only listen to the digital download and still have the CD in its sealed plastic cover even original packing. To me, it is more like a collector's item than a product to be used. It is nice to own something physical from a KZread star like Mary. But for supporting any artist financially, I kind of hate the idea of spending half of the money in shipping and taxes. You just can't avoid that with physical things.

The obvious, OBVIOUS point here is that the VAST majority of consumers have become accustomed to being able to have any and ALL the music they want for £10/month ..... ..the idea that physical formats are ever gonna be a realistic proposition at a level of around $100 PER ITEM(!!!) seems to redefine the phrase 'never gonna happen'....!! ...if you market your nice vinyl album as a piece of art, however .... ..... people actually buy vinyl having no way of playing it......!!!!

I'd be interested in what people think about the statement "it's harder than ever to make money off music." We often hear this but hasn't it always been hard to make money off music? Has it objectively got harder or is it just that now people who find it hard have a platform they can make this statement on. The hard-working muso of the 40s or the 60s probably found it equally hard but wasn't likely to be quoted complaining about this in a newspaper.

Mary, It is completely mad about what happened in music from a long time ago. I can put myself in your shoes. Your creative effort, money and time investment. But Industry treated very bad artists and customers for ages. In my opinion, artists have had a huge problem with channel of music distribution. I'm learning about song writing on your last course and for me it's a many money effort.
