Southern Thailand was part of Malay Kingdom (Peninsular Malaysia) till the British came and break them apart (and give the 3 states/district to Thailand) That's why they're Muslim, and still speaks Malay in the 3 Southern Thai districts

@@izzuddinfakarudin5696 That's right. But not only that, there is Chinese also, and they speak similar Mandarin and Hokkien, even though most are of Hakka ethnicity. I have been there in 2001.

@@terencelee880 yes, there are Chinese too. Once upon a time ago during the old Malay Kingdom, there was a small arab community even, and they've interbred with the locals (and migrated to Kelantan and other parts of Malaysia)

Patani Kingdom was malay kingdom before defeated by thai kingdom. All is just like northern peninsular Malaysia, only the malay languages almost less spoken because of thai kingdom policies. Hopefully all the muslim keep strong to practices Islam faith.

The lady not only had a coffee (espresso) machine in the back of her car but also a coffee bean grinder there! She grounded the beans freshly for you when you ordered, which usually only happens at higher end coffee places. That’s amazing 😍😍

We love how you can find such great coffee on the streets around Thailand. Always made fresh too!

That mosque is Masjid Jame' Songkhla. Three years ago when visiting Hatyai/Songkhla we stopped by at this mosque for our prayers.

Love this country and how people are allowed to prosper, even if it is selling coffee from their stationwagen..nice of you to show the diversity and tolerance of Thailand.

Yes, when we (muslims) visit a masjid (mosque) we usually do a short voluntary prayer in respect to the mosque. But if we are there during prayer time, we'll just pray the obligatory prayer during that specific time.

Province of songkhla used to be one of the malay state in malay peninsular, until now, south of thailand and a tip of south of myanmar still a part of malay peninsular...but siam kingdom (thai today) win the war and take over one third of malay land, songkhla in thai, but the original name is singgora which is the city of lion in english... Many place in southern thai used to be in malay but convert to thai language such as phuket-bukit(hill), koh phi-phi is pulau api-api(fire island), krabi(gheribbi), ranong (rundung), satun (setul) and many more...but malays in southern thai nowdays cant speaks malay anymore accept in a part of songkhla, pattani, yala and Narathiwat... And they prefer known as thai muslim then a malay... 4 states (Kedah, perlis, kelantan and Terengganu) of malaysia today used to be under siam control before british took over Malaya...this a little bit of history of southern thai, thats because many foreigners feel southern of Thailand more similar to Malaysia then a city of Bangkok 😊😊😊😊...

But...I don't think I am Malay. My ancestors have been here for long. Our culture is influenced from many cultures. Thai South or Malay North (I like this term) or Southern Thailand has been cosmopolitan city-state. Once It was close to Malay World and then Tai speaking World. Why? Becos of political strength and trading. However, It depends on your own historical perspective. Maybe we need to understand our history more than War history. Btw, Thai or Siam and Malay are not race. They are cultural identities.

Not a surprise, once you have tried Malaysian cuisine, you will tend to miss every now and then. Great that you still have the strong Malaysian food cravings.... LOL .... Meanwhile , just have to weather through the MCO 3.0 we have here..... As a matter of fact, I do make effort or trip to explore different religions site - temple / shrine / mosque / churches when I travel overseas as I love and appreciate architecture ... ..Stay safe, happy exploring...

Hat yai is a place where many northern Malaysians travel to. Something like a weekend “getaway”

That mosque looks stunning. It's quite similar to the Taj Mahal. Oh ya, it's the Taj Mahal of Thailand...👍👍

Hatyai, my only foreign holiday destination (4 days 3 nights) for the last 10 years. 4 times a year or more and even spent many Chinese new years there with my family. Thanks for bringing back some fond memory. Will be there once covid protocol is lifted.

If P'Ken doesn't want to waste time searching for hotels I recommend these 2 hotels which are B2 and Hop inn. 2 hotels are available in almost every province. Or in major cities, these 2 hotels are clean and new, the price is about 6-700 baht (each province is not the same as the popular tourist But the price will not exceed 750-800 baht) Try it out as an option when you don't know where to stay.And if you book through the app, the price will be lower.😁😁🙏🙏

I would have loved to have prayed in that mosque - so beautiful. I did pray in some mosques in Thailand including the Ao Nang Mosque and the mosque on Koh Panyee Muslim Floating village as well as the ones in Bangkok and in Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lipe

Ken, go and try the BBQ and Hotpot combination dinner in Hat Yai at only RM40/-. Amazing buffet restaurant with a lot of seafood, meat, noodles, salads, fresh vegetables, desserts, ice cream, etc. Very good value for your money. I enjoyed it in December 2019. A few such buffet restaurants in Hat Yai.

I miss Hatyai. Used to drive up there. Only 2 hours from padang besar

Muslims prays 5 times a day normally. So when Muslims travel and then comes across a mosque, Muslims will definitely stop to pray. Small/old mosques or big/nice mosques does not matter.

Thanks Ken for showing the Taj mahal mosque. It’s beautiful... didn’t discover before as m’sian normally whenever visit hat yai the agenda is only shop & eat 😅😅😅. Will keep in the itinerary nx time when the border is open.

don’t miss a roti restaurant in Hat Yai at Cha-Chak Forseen (nice roti, Steak, Thai tea and dessert) It’s my favorite roti restaurant.

You should try the braised pork leg rice. There are lots of nice food in Hatyai. One of them is Kan Eng Restaurant

Visit Kim yong market -wine village -khlong hae floating market - Samila beach songkhla -Hatyai Multicipal park ( can take cable car ) -Tesco hatyai - Central festival -ASEAN night bazar -Alive restaurant ( go night time , beautiful environment) - mango sticky rice, near odeon supermarket, night time 8pm open. Just sell mango sticky rice.( the best mango sticky rice I try) -kan Eng restaurant - the cottage hatyai/ nice Thai food n with Thai live band. Nice environment not tourist place - massage regency hotel or nearby, cane request from hotel concierge too.

When I was travelling in Thailand, I asked for masjid or surao when I can't find halal food, normally there will be a shop or two selling halal food...

Don't forget to explore Ko Yo Island at Songkhla. The handmade fabric is awesome.

You should try sea food in songkla from the muslim food outlet. The seafood are the best.

I used to stay in red planet hotel as well every year, this hotel hot spot during sonkran.... if malaysia restaurants you can go to kelantan restaurants just walk from behind Lee Garden Hotel after you passby salama restaurants walk to that alley till the end the you can find kelantan restaurants. and for roti canai from the restaurant you eat just know walk little bit further there is another open restaurant to eat roti canai a bit cheaper.. BTW enjoy your trip in Hatyai!

You really know how to eat it right either Thai or Malaysia food. As i am looking like a child development 😆😆 , like you at least can eat fish 🐟 even not your favourite.

you can try go to Asean market near Central festival.... or street food near the roundabout near stadium

Is like Nescafe o Ice (without milk)..here in Malaysia..Just some cafe & restaurant or Starbucks they call Americano..maybe coffee is different..but the taste still same @ similar..When I still little kids ..I thought is different thing..But I realized the taste is same thing/similar ..Just maybe different brand coffee..

Hat Yai is a very good living place, I used to be there for five year.

love hearing Ken saying sambal belacan perfect pronunciation and how Ken able to describe it so well..yes the price not cheap but I saw they provided some healthy salad beside it and the milk tea served in proper glass and big portion ..cafe style presentation and ambience.. So happy to see Ken stayed for.some time in Hatyai right in the town so popular with Malaysian tourist pre-covid..Hatyai town is great too as walking distance to railway station and lots lots mid range and budget hotels to choose and compare prices .. lots hawkers for food ..though I do think simple coffee or kopi in Thailand cost more than most similar coffeeshops in Malaysia.. Good choice to have fruits that readily available in Thailand...good choice on the orange coloured melon fruit.. Yes, sure.looks like Taj Mahal of Thailand.

Nasi goreng literally means fried rice, it is not exclusively belong to Indonesia... all country in asia have nasi goreng

how cool is that i also admire thai people in terms of creativity as they love to customize their vehicles into something unique & cool but mostly more multifunctional for their business & everyday use✨👌🇹🇭 & in terms of cultural diversity today in Thailand thai millennials are into japanese & korean culture like in terms of foods, looks, products & stuff w/c explains why there are a lot of japanese & korean restaurants in bangkok & they also had these a lot of events before related into those things not just in bangkok but also in chiang mai w/c is fascinating 😻 ........ what a great & informative content for today ken never thought that there's a replica of Taj Mahal exist in Thailand 👌😺 cool ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

dont be too surprised about the Malay appearance of southern thailand :) It was an independent malay sultanate until 1909 (just like any of the states with sultans in current peninsular malaysia) and local malay leaders and public institutions were only replaced by thai ones before world war 2.

I think your new hotel Red Planet used to be Tune Hotel (Air Asia). How I missed Hatyai 😁.

Yes Red Planet is a Thai group that took over many Tune Hotels in South East Asia. They have hotels in Indonesia, Philippines and Japan too.

To answer your question. Yes it is normal for traveling Muslims to pray in any masjid when traveling and is actually better than just praying in your hotel room. You get to meet other Muslims and its like visiting distant relatives in a sense.

Surprised you didn't wait until next year to travel during all these lockdowns here.

They also have a good variety of nasi ayam in hatyai like kaitod decha near the train station...i dont know if they are open or not during pandemic situation...

Maybe a rich Saudi paid for the mosque, I have heard before that they like to do that to help support the Islam beliefs. Anyway looks pretty spectacular no matter who paid for it. A lot of spectacular Wats here in Thailand are also paid for by some hugely wealthy Thai who wish to feel good supporting their Buddhist beliefs, some of them are truly amazing no matter what your beliefs are, well worth a visit.

It’s too bad they didn’t have nasi lemak!

'Penang 🍜 food @ Hatyai' Ken, let me recommend you another Breakfast /Supper place in 'multi-cultural' Hatyai _a Coffee-shop just a Stones-throw from your Red Planet hotel Mornings til Lunch: it has Excellent & Authentic Penang 'Hokkien Char' (Fried yellow noodles) + 'Hokkien Mee' (Prawn-stock🍜) _ @ 55-60 bahts Another stall has quite good Thai 'Aharn Tum-saang' (cooked-to-order) like Fried-rice, Basil chicken/🦐, 🍳 From 5pm: the Coffee-shop closes, and a family-member sets-up tables & chairs on the sidewalk _selling Penang fried-noodles & grilled🐠🦐🦑 Its the Blue-coloured shop, on the Right corner (@ 11.10mins of video) Bon Appetit !
