    The whole point of getting this simple audio recorder, is for run and gun recording, where you want everything simple and straightforward. The original H1 is simpler for this purpose. The physical buttons on the outside makes it easy to set what you want, while the new H1n requires you to change it in menu. Battery is a huge deal too, and I much prefer using the single AA battery in the old H1, since I already have rechargeable AA batteries for my flash lights. Otherwise, the sound quality is pretty much identical for both. The slate beep function on the H1n is neat, but not necessary. One can always simply just clap with your hands to get that click waveform for syncing.

    Yeah the H1N might have slightly better sound quality using its onboard mics but using external mics plugged into both the H1 and H1N will probably be identical. The question is, do you upgrade to the H1N for minor improvements? I don't think so. I just recently modified mine to have a metal 1/4-20 jack. If mine breaks, I'll probably just get the H1N at that point but for now, I don't see any reason to. Although, the H1N looks much nicer and has better screen.

    2024. I bought a new unused H1 for £30 on eBay. The battery, the gain dial vs the side buttons when a windshield is fitted and the single record button on the H1 vs the multi buttons on the H1N on the front made the H1 stand out as the better option for me.

    the biggest improvement on the H1n, and the only reason I replaced my ancient H1, is that on the new version input monitoring can be turned off while in audio interface mode! The H1 headphone jack is always monitoring the input preamps, so no matter how low you turn the input gain, there will always be a bit of extra hiss and handling noise. Not the end of the world, but I use my H1 as audio interface for my portable "studio" setup and it was really annoying. I still have it though, I actually record the output of my H1n into my H1.... don't ask haha

  • @Monscent

    exactly.. this is such a poor design choice from zoom.. the dial is fine it just needs an option in the menu to allow gain to be locked along with everything else. people are using these devices in situations where you don't get repeat takes and if its in someone pocket or being handled by other people it is too vulnerable.. I'm actually shocked this is missing, aside from stop/start gain is the most important thing you want locked.

    I just received a Tascam DR-05X and I'm unable to get 3 out of my 5 microphones to work on it. The recording is so low it's barely audible. After doing some research I've learned that I need a "3-volt" amplifier to be able to record normally with a 3.5mm plug-in microphone. Does the Zoom require this also?

    I think nobody mentioned one, for someone crucial, thing. How long battery lasts when Zoom is off. According to consumption here are theoretical values (based on claimed minimal capacity of Eneloop AA(1900mAh) and Eneloop AAA(750mAh)): Zoom H1: Off: about 10-11days (!!!! its consumption when is "completely turned off" is about 8mA! First series had this issue even worse) On: 15 hours On(+backlight): 12 hours Recording: 13 hours (very fuzzy, consumption when recording is not constant) Zoom H1n: Off: 3 years, 62 days and 9 hours (theoretical, hadn't chance to test in real. Measured consumption is about 27uA(0.027mA) so I guess there will be some accuracy error) On: 14 hours On(+backlight): 12 hours Recording: 13 hours (same measuring issue as on H1) So when you keep/forget batteries in Zoom when not using it, there is HUGE difference how long they last in the device. (In real life values will be somewhat lower. These values are just theoretical, doesn't include premature shutdown because of Zoom "low battery" logic and so on)

    @Mt. Silver Productions Absolutely. If someone want to record something like lectures or conferences and then monitor in other devices the H1 might be better. But I don't think Zoom targeted to the “IC voice recorder” market. It's little silly to say about the microphone quality of recorders in this price range however as a “audio recorder” I think the H1n sounded better, at least in this video.

    I'd say the H1n sounded fuller and warmer in this particular test using the internal mics. As for battery, I prefer dual AAA batteries as oposed to a single AA battery because most reachargeable batteries can only be charged to at a time.

    Mt. Silver Productions actually energizer makes a charger that can charge 4 at a time in about 30 minutes. I use that as a post to charging it on the computer because it’s much faster and it doesn’t eat up as much power. It works with AAA and AA batteries. There are also battery adaptors for C and D batteries in case you have an old boombox or something like that.

    The H one and seems to have a little bit more on the low-end and not as much on the high-end. I have The original H one and I’m going to tell you I was quite disappointed with it. And these complaints are pretty major.the original had no internal memory whatsoever it relied on SD card. This was a huge problem for me because I like to use my SD card sparingly instead of in the primary because if you manage to lose your SD card somehow you would not be able to use your recorder. And the second thing was that the controls were on the side. And they were so far recessed in the plastic that they were not easy to use and my finger nails would often get stripped. Also I do not like the standby function. I like to record immediately. The audio was good though so I do have to give them credit because they most certainly got that part right. Also another thing was if used any of the filters, you can get some pretty nasty pops and cracks during playback. So I wound up replacing it with in six months with a recorder that had a much easier Interface. In my personal opinion Olympus has the easiest and most friendly interfaces. all of the buttons are right on top, and some models even have voice guidance which helps me tremendously as I am 100% totally blind. And they really been working with their audio over the years to get it to be almost just as good. And they just came out with a new one it is just a little bit more than that H-1N, but it’s got all of the same functions, but it is significantly smaller than the H-1N weighing in at just over 2 ounces. It also has three Mics instead of two, and you can use anyone of them as an Omni directional. Also instead of XY it runs on an a B pattern instead which allows for better hearing from left to right as something passes by. I do not own one yet so I can’t tell you have a mic preamp is, but if it’s anything like what they are using on the DM 720 it will sound pretty awesome.

  • @alextheobserver1573

    @alextheobserver1573

    In practice after five years of posting this, I find myself coming back here. When I purchased the Olympus model recorders, I discovered that the promotional material that they were using actually made them sound better than they are. Which was disappointing. Also, the microphone preamp’s for the Olympus recorders. Have a very strange thing going on with noise floor. The noise floor for the Olympus recorders is extremely high. Which is not ideal for recording in the field. And if the controls are moved to the top for the H one in, then I am finding myself wanting to consider it again.
